    This is pretty much the bottom line. The litmus test in F1 is comparisons with your teamate. Unfortunately for Monty boy, he seems to have been spanked by Kimi Raikkonen for the last 2 years, even though he did put on some good showings in 2005.

    Montoya is notorious for his inability to cope under pressure. He's a choker. Not exactly the best characteristic for your F1 driver. With McLaren getting Alonso in 07, they clearly want to push for Raikkonen, so he was definitely leaving McLaren. I suspected that he would have gone to Red Bull to fill a David Coulthard spot, but the NASCAR move is shockingly hilarious.

    In my opinion, Montoya really had very little options of where to move. Back to Indy would have been a wrong move...to NASCAR is more of a risk, but it will be truly interesting to see how a polished F1 driver can handle in NASCAR. I mean I have very little regard towards NASCAR, even though some of the drivers are quite good (Gordon, Stewart), but its a completely different beast out there. It's not about precision but moreso about brutishness and roughnecking...

    I'll keep an eye on NASCAR for old Monty's sake. The only thing I really derive from this news is that maybe, just maybe, we'll have Montoya and Raikkonen in 07 for McLaren

    And for the remaining races in the championship. This is good news, De La Rosa is a driver who never got a real chance to prove himself and he will be giving us a show I guarantee that. He may not be an Alonso or Schumacher, but he can definately hang with all the rest of the drivers, but much more motivated.

    Kimi should switch to nascar - and so should Button. Im sure they are sick of the lack of real racing in F1.

    Neither has any F1 luck. They are just pounding sand on Bernies beach playing at being designated losers.

    Both would have a better chance to actually win something sometime if they switch to Organs R Us now.

    The money is awesome and theres no limit on lead changes, crashes or apre race fist fights with other drivers.

    I wouldnt be so sure that letting montoya go will be such a great thing for Mclaren in the long run. I dont perceive Kimi as much superior to Montoya at all and Mclaren is not really any better now then Redbull, Toyota, or Honda which all have potential going in to 07. Actually, Mclaren has sucked for quite some time now (since Hakinnen) and I dont care if MS were going to switch over, they would still suck.

    Very true.
    Mercedes has really not been able to deliver the hardware necessary to win a championship. And no matter who is in the seat, their car-building abilities are not up to par with the best. Not by a long shot.
    Unless some miracle happens, Alhomso will have the same problems as Kimi, Monty and Hakki before them: Poor build quality.

    On the other hand I think quite a few pilots could win the championship in a Renault, given their current forte in making cars that are both fast and durable.

    Carlos, can't agree more.............He never had a real opportunity...I had the chance to meet him for a while in a dinner, and I can say, personaly talking, that he's an absollutely balanced psiquism, and extremely humble...tonnes of real class...

    that was years ago...before he reached F1..after his Japaneese "Tour"........excuse this "little battle", but, what I was trying to express is that, MARTINEZ DE LA ROSA, is a great,and highly professional pilot.............in the place I live ("Poland", Spain), his surname is not so "well sounding" as other "Polish" names, so, he is not so considered in the mass media............

    In any case, he is a brilliant Pilot, and I hope......please excuse me the non spanish members of the forum, he will have the opportunity Alonso had.......and I pray for all the REAL pilots should have all arround the planet..............

    I think it is a huge shame. I cant understand why Montoya has had such a bad year. If you look at f1.com, several times he had faster laps than Kimi. He is one of the few people who really took on Schu and proved he ws as good, if not better.

    Hopefully he will come back to F1 once the new rules take effect because it would be a huge shame for his F1 career to end this way.

    Indeed, I'm going to miss him as a comentator though, his insight during the races was priceless.

    I disagree. I think the Mercedes engine has been pretty damn good the last two years. This year, McLaren really hit a depression as a result of the loss of Adrian Newey to Red Bull. Its effects reverberated through the team, no doubt.

    I think they've already tanked the season and have begun really working on a package that ol' Alonso will find suitable.

    I just hope that Kimi stays. We might find another golden age in F1, akin to the days of Senna/Prost, again on McLaren
