    1990 Carrera 4

Hello to a great forum! I am new here and would kindly seek advice on a possible purchase. I am looking at a 1990 Carrera 4 with 95K miles. It looks to be well kept and in great condition overall. The seller is asking $24K but will negotiate. Can anyone offer advice on this particular model? How much more 'life' can one expect from a car of this vintage and would regular maintenance be comparable to that of my 1998 Boxster?

Thanks very much in advance for any help offered.

    Tom

I think that price is too high. You can buy a lower mileage example of the 964 for that much cash. Also, I think I'd recommend a C2. The AWD version of the 964 is quite heavy and complex, causing reduced performance in a straight line and understeer in the corners. Since you live in Dallas, there will be very few days that it would be a benefit in my opinion and many where it would be a disadvantage.

Also a 1990 964 was made before they corrected some faults with the series, most notably the head gasket. Early 964's had none and often leaked oil. 1992+ (and maybe some 91's) had solved this issue.

Overall, it's a very stout car that shouldn't have much more maintenance needs than a Boxster and should have some good life left (but I'd still look for a lower mileage C2 if it were me). And if you can stretch, the RS America is a very nice car (as is a 993 for not much more)...

Grant is right on...go for a C2, a 1992 or later if possible. But don't hesitate to buy an earlier one. The main thing is to get a pre-purchase inspection. There are many good Porsche shops in Dallas, I get my '90 C2 serviced at 911 Enterprises and I would highly recommend them for a pre-purchase inspection or service after you buy your car.
Also, if you intend to do any autocrossing or driver events (DE's), then definitely go for a C2.

I'd take a 88/89 Carrera 3.2 into consideration as well. Not only do they look better, they are the last of the long production run (so most problems fixed), have almost no electronics and are less maintenance intensive than a 964.

Have I mention that they look better?
    Guess, I'm biased:

That is one great example of an 88 carrera cab
