    997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

Would any of the members consider buying a 996 Turbo or Turbo S over a 997 S? What would be the pros and cons? I own a 2006 997 S loaded with options and an aerokit. I enjoy the car but suddenly have these thoughts about buying a late production 996 Turbo or Turbo S.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

I would not give up a 997S "loaded" with options for a 996 Turbo or Turbo S. Really what would you be gaining? If you want the Turbo I would save and get a used 997 TT in about a year or so. I personally like the feel and look of the 997 over a 996 but that is just my opinion. If you have the X51 on your 997S I would not even consider it. But again this is just me. I am sure others will think differently.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

    Well, I think that's a tough one.

I like the suggestion of waiting for used 997 TT's if you can.

Otherwise, it's a tough choice IMO. I also find myself wanting more power than my 997S has (does it ever end?). The 996 Turbo certainly is a fantastic beast of a car with the potential for upgrades and mods down the line to continue to please the appetite. It's got the bulletproof race proven GT1 based 3.6 engine. Sheesh - it's one helluva car and it's soon to see it's prices drop considrably as current owners trade up for a 997 TT. In general, 996's are not holding their value well, and I suspect the same will be true of the TT, meaning a good time to buy one lies ahead.

    A 911 Turbo is a timeless beast.

If I could get my hands on a 993 Turbo or Turbo S, I would, since that's a car that is likely to appreciate over time, and still remain a joy to drive.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

My us$.02. On the public roadways (which is all I do with my 997S) I sometimes yearn for Turbo hp/tq to pass slower cars on twisty rural highways. That's about the only good reason, in my situation, I can offer for getting any turbo.

OTOH, the thrill factor of everyday driving (the "cheap" thrills) would be nice to have, but compared to my perfectly capable 997S, I'm not sure I'd want the 996 interior and other "lesser" styling cues and features that come with the car.

My CDN$.02 is worth less than that, so I'd listen to MMD.

Nah..., with just two pennys the retail cashiers don't bother to check their country of origin.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

I own a 997 C2S Cab., and this thought ALWAYS crosses my mind, especially with the considerable drop in prices on the 996 TT... but having said that, the 996 TT is more and more showing age, especially interior wise... the more you see 997 TTs and GT3s on the road, and with the coming release 997 Targa, the more your 996 will feel OLD, TT or no TT... stick with your 997 C2S, work hard at whatever you do in life, and save up for a 997 TT or GT3 in a year or two down the road... that's what I'm doing :-)

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

Well, it might eb old, but I sure love the looks of the 996 turbo... it is a beast, and it will always be... as much as there will always be newer/stonger cars. You might want to ask yourself WHY keeps the 996tt keep crossing my mind? Because it is cheaper? better looking? better performing? Because a turbo model will always be something special? check your reasons and score them in value...

After getting used to a 997, you won't be satisfied with the 996 Turbo/S. Straight line? Maybe. Handling performance? Definetely not.
Have you ever thought getting a 997 GT3? It provides the same (or slightly better) 0-125 mph performance compared to the 996 Turbo.

The biggest advantage of the 996 Turbo is the fact, that you can tune it pretty easy. This is also the reason why I wouldn't buy one from a private owner and/or without warranty.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

As much respect I have for the TT and as a previous owner, I have to say I would not give up my 997S for the TT. Number one performance wise they are close, at least off the line. No.2 the 996TT is beginning to look out dated, specially the nose of the car. No.3 the 997S looks and handles better and technology wise is an all around better car.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

Let's not forget that Turbo's and GT3's have bullet proof engines, much stronger than a C2S.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

Went from a 996 turbo coupe to a 997 S cab w/ the next planned move to a 997 turbo cab so my opinion is pretty obvious.

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

Stronger yes, much stronger NO. And who says the 3.8 is not bullet proof?

    Re: 997 S versus 996 Turbo or 996 Turbo S

The M97 (3.8l) engine is basically the same engine as in the Boxster 3.2 but larger displacement. Same goes for the M96 (3.6l) engine. These are manufactured differently from the GT1 inspired 3.6 that has been in 911's since 1989, but now is available only in the GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 Cup Car, and Turbo.

The M96 and M97 are not built to manage the power that the 3.6 in the GT series and Turbo are, let alone the modifications that are available in those cars.

The reliability if the M97 remains to be proven, but the M96 has been plagued by RMS leaks, and that problem still exists in the M97, though the magnitude is unknown.

I did change from a 997 S to a 996 Turbo X50 and I am very happy with the extra power and performance.
The problem with the 996 Turbo is the soft suspension. Ichanged to H&R coilovers and anti-sway bars and the improvement is enormous. The ride-height is adjustable, and both road and track performance is MUCH better than a 997S.

I can recommend thesuspension without reservation, ittransforms the 996 Turbo from a fast boat into a serious track weapon - with plenty of long-distance comfort. I am very satisfied with the upgrade from the somewhat underpowered 997S. Now I just need to lose some weight....

    Much stronger, I'd say.
