    Extended overboost?

A question for all 997 Turbo SC drivers:

Does your Tip with SC have extended overboost to redline?
Does your manual SC have the extended or permanent obverboost?

    Re: Extended overboost?

as I stated before with my manual turbo SC when I floor the accelerator is any gear the overboost icon illuminates - when I let up on the pedal it disappears. When I hold the pedal to the floor for more than 10 secs, it disappears

    Re: Extended overboost?

Seems like you're going to have to get the car dynoed. If you see any hiccups in the torque chart, it would indicate some kind of overboost. Otherwise, it would just be a flatline.

In that case, Porsche Overboost = Porsche marketing hype.

Not sure what pills you've taken (or maybe you bought the wrong car ) but there is an overboost. AUM was only curious if the overboost disappears after 10 seconds of full throttle or not. Oh boy...

    Re: Extended overboost?

RC: Forgive me because I don't want to seem like I'm trying to be critcal. But I have to agree with SVtrader to a certain extent. Isn't the overboost "option" really just another Porsche marketing BS hosejob? Why not just offer overboost all the time for free? Why make it an option (or part of an option)? Does it cost Porsche anything to have this feature on all the time as it appears to be on your car and others with tip (extra warranty repair costs maybe)? Maybe I don't understand how the overboost works and am missing something. Does the overboost require any additional parts that are not on the 997TT already?

To be honest, I don't know for sure.
A few years ago, I took part in some sort of a "poll" and was asked what features I would like to see in a future 911 Turbo model. "Overboost" came to my mind from my old Lancia Delta HF Integrale days. It was a great feature and I loved it, simply because it was my first turbo charged car.

Why did Porsche implement the overboost? The official reason seems to be components stress. The overboost allows for a short time to exceed the given specs without compromising reliability.
The unofficial reason? I can only have a guess or two.
Personally, I think that the overboost will disappear on the powerkit, the GT2 and the Turbo S. Then, take the factory claims (which are without overboost) and compare them to the new models, voila: you have a much better performance. If you take the overboost into consideration too, the values wouldn't seem that good anymore. Why doing this? Maybe because the air gets thinner in the upper power range. The GT2 is already rumored to hit 200 kph (125 mph) below 11 seconds. Now take the 997 Turbo without Tip and without overboost and the factory claim is 12.8 seconds. Take a 997 Turbo Tip with Sport Chrono and you get around 11.7-11.8 seconds. Understood? The overboost actually helps to keep the factory claim valid but in reality, it increases performance pretty well. Of course this is just a wild guess, it could be a different reason too. The high boost pressure of the overboost (1.2 bar max.) actually indicates that this is the "end" of the possible and reliable boost pressure, meaning that the powerkit and GT2 maybe get different chargers or more displacement, whatever.

Yes, it surely has something to do with marketing but not what most people seem to suspect. It is not a feature Porsche really advertises, most interested customers don't have a clue that Sport Chrono also includes the overboost function. Lots of them still think that it has the same functions like on the Carrera models, thinking of the additional money as a rip-off. Same thinking regarding the PCCB brake: the 997 Turbo PCCB is more expensive but most people seem to overlook that the front 380 mm disc and caliper is actually taken from the Carrera GT and has nothing in common with the 350 mm disc and caliper of the Carrera models.

If the overboost would be a simple marketing ploy, they would advertise it better. They don't, actually they don't advertise it at all to my knowledge. Just in the technical specs.

    Re: Extended overboost?

That sounds like marketing to me But surely the overboost is worth every penny.

At least you get something with SC on the TT. On the 997S, all you get is throttle mapping, which is kind of like getting nothing without really knowing you're getting nothing.

BTW, can't wait for that GT2!

    Re: Extended overboost?

Another question that I have is why would the engine not be able to handle the overboost staying on after 10 seconds and if so I assume someone in the aftermarket will soon be able to program that into the computer.

    Re: Extended overboost?

I think Porsche is the first to charge for overboost - (higher temporary boost) All other car makers have included that feature for free with their turbocharged cars that had it.Lancia has, Volvo has, Saab has.

But Porsche being Porsche - chooses to charge you more to activate what is already programmed in.

Yes it is a blatant "activation" rip off fee.

Im sure the Turbo S and GT2 engines will be running a little above max standard 997TT "overboost" bar as normal
to reach RC's mentioned accelleration times for them.

Porsche is using the excuse of Sport Chrono to charge for what should be free and is already there- the overboost feature. Its a very slimy and cynical thing to do to customers.

If BMW charged a extra fee on the M6/M5 to activate "full
power" on the I Drive, people would laugh at them. If Ferrari tried that This board would be loaded with anti Ferrari posts. But Porsche does it and its OK? I say no its not ok, its still insulting no matter how good the car is.

    Re: Extended overboost?

Jim, the overboost is part of the Sport Chrono package.
I actually never understood why Porsche charges for Sport Chrono, I would make it a standard option on ALL cars, incl. the Boxster and the Cayman.

But this is Porsche...charging for everything, only the air inside their cars is for free. Still.

    Re: Extended overboost?

RC, I agree Sport Chrono package should be stabndard. And it is not too hard to realize that the TT's overboost is just a few more lines of code in the ECU - that they open when the Sport Chrono is selected from the options list.

You're right, Sport Chrono would be just...a different software programming/mapping. In my opinion, that stupid looking stop watch on the dash is just a piece of junk to justify the extra Sport Chrono money. No doubt about it.

But this is how Porsche works, this is Porsche. I just wish they would offer a "delete stop watch" option with Sport Chrono, I would even pay 500 Euro for that (maybe I just gave them an idea now... ).

Maybe, maybe we're paying for Sport Chrono development cost?!

Bottom line is: it is a shame for a performance cars manufacturer like Porsche to charge extra money for a performance option, sorry. I'm also a little bit annoyed by the powerkit option but maybe I'm the only one who feels that way. Especially because we always have to wait for the availability of the powerkit, it should be nice to get it from the start. Shouldn't be a real problem, the powerkit has been developed with the regular engine together.

    Re: Extended overboost?

I went for a test drive last week with a manual. It had sport chrono. The overboost wasn't obvious to me . Yes, I could feel a slight difference but I thought that the difference when the overboost was on would be MUCH bigger
    "
Maybe when one starts to know the car better one can feel the difference better....
