Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

Bilal, MB always was big on technology, may be not so much electronics. In fact, even in the 70's, there was a feeling MB's were over-engineered, along with the fear `what happens if it breaks down near MAyberry? Can the local gas station fix it?' Then electronics arrived. As early as the early 90's, roughly 30 percent of a BMW cost was in electronics. Now cars are no longer mechanical devices; they are an electronics object driving mechanical components. This is true of almost all cars, evne cheap ones. Many of the `hi-tech' items in MB's were in fact developed before by other manufacturers -- although MB advertizing takes credit. MB does have a large R&D unit which is active.

Porsche has far fewer defects overall than MB. They both use a lot of technology. So balming it on high tech is probably not correct. I personally think, the problems with MB came at least ot a large part from the top of hte company which lost sight of producing good cars, rahter than enough profits to keep Daimler Chrysler solvent. Look at the pay of DC Board -- many times that of the BMW Board.

In hte 70's there was talk of why American companies could not build cars like the Japanese did. A reason that resonated waas that while Mr. Honda and Mr. Toyota were still alive, GM and Ford were being run by business types. However, still the American auto industry did servive and they started building decent cars.

My impression from the various boards is that MB is on the verge of turning it around -- although we'll have to see what JD Powers says. With the Porsche family still in charge of Porsche, it is likely they will keep bringing as much excitement as they can afford to bring. Unfortunately, MB's larger R&D budget cannot have the same kind of leadership.

I have an E55 on order. I'll soon figure whether I made a mistake or not.

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

Well if you want a comfortable MB car with a "hint" of sportiness and a monster engine but don't mind electronic gremlins, then that is what you're gonna get.

However if you want porsche dynamics and 4WD grip, with Ferrari involvement, then look elsewhere, such a car does NOT exist...

The choice my friend is yours...

ps, fully delimited, what stock 60K GBP car will do 0-300km/hr in Porsche GT2 territory, and on to a top speed, which eclipses the Porsche Carrera GT, of 208mph?

Well, you could consider the 4WD Porsche 911 turbo, unless of course, by "Ferrari involvement" you mean total unreliability and "rip-off" maintenance costs, in which case you will have to look elsewhere.

Oh, NO! It's not a test drive in an AMG, is it?

Ok, final entries are in, you got half of it correct, its the E55 AMG

whoa, since when can an unlimited E55 do 208 mph?

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

    ok I lied, it'll do 207.9ishmph~

    Seriously!

E55, if the engine revs to 6500rpm, cutout, it should do it no?

    S55,

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

Well, the speedos that you showed were at about 305 and 308, so that ends up being about 190.04+-0.6 and 192.4+-0.2, respectively, and, assuming that the speedos are accurate, i would personally be a bit surprised if the car could keep going...not saying its impossible but i have not ever heard of a E55 going that fast.

again, i'm not saying its impossible because i have not driven the car and so i can't really make that statement, i'm just saying i'm skeptical.

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

Also, why would these photos be so important that people would take them, if the car still had a good 15 mph to go???

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

Its a second stage LIMITED car, both of them thats why.

The car is RESTRICTED to 186mph, however due to the power of the engine, it is possible to "overruN" and do the speeds you say

I can understand why you're skeptical, trust me, ALL the V8 kompressor cars will do 200mph+ Apart fom the SL55, which will just do about 201~mph (shorter gearing)

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

yeah i know that some restricted cars can over-run their limits, the 155 mph limited Z8 for instance has been shown to run to over 160 mph despite their limiters not being modified.

Also, I still doubt that ALL AMG cars could do 200+....the S-Class is pretty freaking heavy, so i don't know about it doing over 200 even if it had no limiter whatsoever.

Re: don't worry if your AMG breaks down...

I don't think weight really maters when you get to speeds of above 160-180mph, its more about frontal area and aerodynamic coefficeint, by gearing, the S55 hits 200mph at 5800rpm, and maximum power delivery occurs at 6100rpm, and redline is at 6500rpm, now if the car doesn't hit max speed around max power 6100rpm, its been incorrectly geared, you make your own judgements...
