Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

After much deliberation I have decided to get a new or almost new 987S.
As some of you know, I have a 986S that I have been (and still am) very fond of for many reasons.

Before deciding on a new 987S I have been considering quite a few other cars, but no other car has a total package that delivers as well as the Boxster in the areas that are important to me:
Handling, power, fun, looks, feel (physical and emotional), cabrio, brand appeal.
All in all a great driver's car with an unbeatable fun/style/whoohoo!-factor.

BMW M3 cabrio is fast and raw, but still a converted family car - and it ain too pretty IMO.
The Honda 2000, Imprezas, EVO 8, Nissan 350 ZX etc are all nice, but at the end of the day simply dont have the built quality nor the class that a P offers.
Here in Denmark you get an Audi (A4/S4/RS4) Cabrio for free everytime you buy a tie and a Hugo Boss suit. It's a bland/nice wannabe sportscar. Nice handling and amazing looks but not a P.

Mercs? I dont wanna fall asleep behind the wheel...
Ferrari? Cheapest one is the 997 turbo-priced 430, and at 500,000$ it's totally out of my league. Besides... I'd rather have a 997 turbo

I even considered the Corvette, but it's simply too ...well, American in a bad way, and has an ugly front and a scary interior.
So without flaming any other car on the Planet I ended back where I started. With the Boxey.
(If you have any other suggestions in the same price range Id be happy to hear!)

My only problems with the Boxster is its lack of power (compared to what it can handle) and its rear end design. The taillights look ugly compared to the 986 IMO.

I find the 997 incredibly beautiful, only surpassed in beauty by the Aston Martin DB7 and V8.
And the 997s has the power I miss in the Boxster.
Trouble is I dont want a coupé. I want an open car, and the 997s Cabrio looks like it has a big hump on the back. The car simply isn't as beautiful as the 997 coupe or the 987 IMO.
On top of that, the 997s convertible will run me appr. 350.000 USD in Denmark....and thats both beyond what I am willing to pay for any car here in Denmark, and what it's worth to me.
The 987 will still run me appr. 240.000 USD, so customs are doing what they can to not make me pick a Boxey again
I believe the 987S is a better driving machine that the legendary 911 - and so my perfect car would be a 400 BHP Boxster S with some nice extras - like 19-20" rims and a modified exhaust note.

So bottom line is that I have decided to find a new or slightly used 987s in Germany or similar, and import it.

My challenge now is quit a delightful one: Which color to pick?

My current P is arctic silver, which is both beautiful and waaaaay too common.
And even tho the 987 is 80% new parts compared to the 986, I wont get that new-car-feel if I buy a car in the same color again...
So silver is out for now.

Black: Beautiful when clean, but you cant see the lines of the car and its hot as hell in the summer.

Red: Different and stunning...but the red taillights looks silly on a red background.
    Do silver taillights exist?

Yellow: WOW! Didnt think speedgelb (speed yellow) would look that good, but it does - especially with silver/chrome trimming and rims etc.
Trouble is that yellow makes it look like a toy car - or something meant for the track only...and lets face it: I use it as my daily driver.

Dark Blue: Not my color. Light blue (917 gulf style): Too fresh - would probably grow tired of it.

Atlas grey: Perhaps. A bit "safe" and conservative, but beautiful...perhaps with a tan interior?

White: Saw one with cocoa interior, and while different and very "sun-shiny" it s also a bit too tropical and hip-hop-pornstar-ish...

    Orange and green: No chance.

Purple: Perhaps a deep purple could be stunning, but that would have to be a BTO-paintjob, and I dont feel like waiting an extra 6 mths.

    OK...so whats left?
    HEELP!`?!?!?

Id really appreciate any input, be it practical considerations, subjective feelings on colors or any other helpful suggestions.

    a-thankyou...

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Well, the best colour is the one you, not everyone else, likes best. You'll get in even more of a flat spin posing questions like that, because everyones taste is different.

Of the colour combinations I've seen, Boothy's guards red with black, wtsnet's seal grey with sand beige or porsche-jeck's seal grey with cocoa all look great to me. Midnight blue with sand beige, on some of the original launch cars looked good. If I was ordering again, I like cobalt blue (rumoured to be a "standard" metallic colour for MY 07) with sand beige. When I was at my dealer recently a guy was collecting his new Atlas grey Boxster with grey interior which looked really classy. Arctic silver with ocean blue (which I've got) is practical, safe for resale, but a bit unimaginative. Speed yellow makes a Boxster look like a banana on wheels. Avoid lapis blue, it is a very soft colour and marks very easily, according to my OPC. White is a no-no for re-sale.

    Confused already?

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

I agree with Guards Red, looks stunning but does not go well with the rear lights. I also think it is a bit too much red in combination with the red 'S' brake pads... Otherwise I would go for Guards Red

Atlas Grey is very nice, got it on my 997. Looks fantastic in direct sunshine, very deep metallic and highly reflective. It is also quite rare, especially compared to Arcitc Silver and Black. However, Atlas Grey looks very dull as soon as the car gets an iny tiny bit dirty. You have to be fond of waxing and polishing if you go Atlas

My favourite color NUMBA ONE is definitely Seal Grey. My next Porsche is going Seal (or Meteor)

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

how about the 2 greys: seal and slate.
    slate is amazing....

    Hehehe...Thanks, Tim.
Nope, not confused - but more running out of creative color combos.
I want a car that stands out a bit (apart from it being a P) and so I welcome color combos and colors that I havent considered.
The dark blue 997 that...was it Steve? borrowed and photographed a while ago was stunning, and with tan interior even more beautiful.
But I have a hard time with blue cars...dunno why. My shrink prolly knows

I was also considering getting a two-toned car, but it will like end up looking like a piece of candy..

    Argh! Decisions decisions...

    Have u asked SWMBO?

SWMBO's all time favourite is polar silver (no longer available, sadly) with blue leather and roof, but she also likes cobalt blue with sand beige or atlas grey with grey. She says you are not to have carmon red under any circumstances.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    Dr,Phil,

Slate Grey is my favorite Porsche color, GT-Silver is also very nice...
Purple-if you really like it there is truly stunning Porsche color called Viola Metallic(code 54), here is 986 in that color...

( ) Can you say 'Gallery'?
Is it cheaper to import one from Germany than to buy in Denmark then Doc?

Note: If you wait and can get a new new one, you might get 3.4l engine and 295gg's... but no Seal....

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Oh yes! That is a stunning combo dreamcar!

Can you say "I guess I dont really need kneecaps anyway..."?
Nobody likes a smartass...especially when he has a car with tan interior THAT I WAAAAAANTTT!!!!!
Whoohoo! Looks stunning. It may be a typical Ferrari-color, but it suits your 987 perfectly.
    Maybe black-tan would also work?
    The blue-tan...is that a dealercar...or?

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    What about ...Green?

Colors are so difficult to choose.

Polar Silver has a lot of blue hue in it and doesnt look as flat as artic does.

Actually Red is sharp. Its bold and classy at the same time
and seems to make the Boxster shape visually "pop" instead of the amorphous spud like look that most colors give them.

I'm just jealous that you're choosing a new car!
Sorry my photography is lousy. I must practice. I have to say I haven't regretted the colour combo at all. But you have to see these combos on cars in the flesh to really decide. Photos are just no good! I like the look of PJ's Cocoa - I very nearly went for that. At the time, there were naff-all dealer cars to get a proper idea of how the colours worked, hence the Midnight/Sand car pics - that was the first sand interior 987/997 I'd seen.

One thought on Guards Red - isn't red a more prone to fading with sunlight exposure than any other colour, due to absorbtion of ultraviolet?

And special colours - did I say that I went round to a leather sofa shop with the idea of getting leather-to-sample when I was choosing my colour scheme? I was after a kinda dark claret colour... God knows why in retrospect. So much of the plastic parts would have clashed unless I went for every other leather option in the book.

Choosing colours... such pleasure... such pain... Aaaah. Have fun!

PS, they are both Sand. I've never seen a natural brown in the flesh. The samples were a little turd-ish colour to me, but I'm sure it looks great in the flesh - I wasn't that brave though!

Yeah, I saw an Olive/Sand 987 at my dealer. Not sure I'd choose it myself, but it looked great polished under the lights.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    Doc,

Black/sand looks stunning. I've got seal/ocean which looks good too.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Oh, Dr. Phil, I have just the colour....

I mean, I'm not biased or anything.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

If you are going to get a brand new one then maybe you would like to consider Meteor Grey? It looks nice in pictures. I am 90% sure that it will be offered as a standard metallic for 07.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

I may be a bit partial, but I think Atlas Grey is fantastic. In the sun it is stunning. And around where I live, it is not a common color. I get compliments all the time. If you want a nice contrast go with the Stone Grey interior. It is a nice combination. The only reason I didn't get it was because of concerns about keeping it looking good long term. A black interior hides many sins. Obviously I don't what is common where you live but here in the Bay Area of California Seal Grey is dime a dozen. But ultimately there are few "bad" colors. Good luck.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    More Atlas Grey

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Dr Phil, you couldn't have summed up your feeling on a 987s for me better. I owned the SLK 350 in 2005 (a crush and the feeling had subsided and I was very sick of it later on) and in the end bought myself a 987s. Although at times I felt that maybe I should've gotten the Cayman S due to the novelty factor (as they say, the boxster is an old hat to P and that's why it rolls out the Cayman) and power but all in all, nothing offers the full package as much as the 987s. The only factor that I wish P can do better on is the Power but all in all, a good pick. Nice balance, nice handling, nice brand awareness... as I am sure you do care how people look at you by the car you pick. Anyway, my SLK 350 was a silver on black and my 987s is also silver on black and it is something that you won't grow tired of. To be honest, pick something not at the spur of a moment and something that you would not grow tired of. Being creative can be risky at times. Here's my pick for you, Silver on Black (550 Spyder had always been in silver), SEAL GREY with COCOA or BLACK with Teracotta. Since you said you didn't want another silver, why not go with SEAL GREY with COCOA or BLACK WITH TERACOTTA?

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

I have Seal Grey on black, but if I were to do it again, I'd probably give Atlas Grey a chance--I saw one the other day and was like, "wow!"

And, if I were made of money, I'd do the Cocoa leather on just about ANY color!

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    Here's what I would get:

Basalt black with XRR wheels (or maybe I would wait and get the new king-bling Turbo wheels) and two-tone black/grey:

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

But that Seal/Cocoa combo that Dreamcar posted sure looked good too

Great news Congrats on your decision - the first step is done, now let the spec game begin
I'm happy that we have to discuss something really nice and serious again (colours...aahhh ) instead of complaining about Porsche's marketing labyrinth

And of course we have to make sure that Rennteam's one and only "Pimp & Guru" gets the ultimate 987 S in terms of style and options (o.k. maybe we should forget the Pimp part for a while - you should talk to PAG's exclusive departmant about that one ).

I agree with most of your own colour analysis:

Plain colours : yellow / white - sometimes looks a bit toyish to me on a Boxster (maybe nice in sunnier climates though)

Red - too much orange IMO (maybe due to P's complex not to get mixed up with the F-cars ?)
Black - nice and sporty but maybe a tough choice if you're not a member of the detailing aficionados club

Metallic colours (other than grey shades)
Olive green and carmona red: looking good in the flesh, but
more suitable for a British classic roadster rather than for a P IMO.
Basalt: not rich enough IMO compared to the plain black and missing some enrichment with hints of blue or brown (like the grey shades)
I skip the blue tones as you said already that you're not a blue guy

    Grey shades
IMO that's the way to go, if arctic silver or GT silver is not for you anymore.
Of course I'm biased with my sealgrey baby, but I must say everytime I see one of the grey shades in the flesh these colours really seem to underline the sporty appearance of the car (the "smallish" Boxster looks a bit "meaner" and masculine in these colours IMO).
Also all of the grey tones are a wonderful match for the red calipers and red rearlights.

Seal (up to MY 07), Atlas, Slate all are beautiful colours -the Meteor (MY 07) has to be seen in the flesh yet, but judging from pics it seems to be very nice also.
Atlas has some blueish tones in it (in sunny weather), Slate some brownish and Seal varies from nearly GT-silver (when very sunny) to almost "tarmac-grey" in cloudy weather.
I guess Meteor will be more a plain grey without the variations Seal or Slate provide.

    Interior
I would stay away from the lighter colours: not because I don't like them, but the plastic parts look too much plasticky in the lighter colours IMO. Also the titan-grey parts fit better with the darker colours IMO.
Unless you're not going for a customized colour I'd choose Cocoa ( ), Black or Blue (depending on the outside colour) or the Black/Grey two tone interior. FWIW I heard that deviating carpet will be a regular option in FY 07 again.

    Searching the right baby
If you can live with the stigma of getting the outdated 3.2 L engined version (hehe ) there should be some pretty nice deals now (after the announcement of the 3.4 for MY 07).
However there are not too many preowned 987 S available yet at the German Porsche-Zentren. Make sure not to browse PAG's website for used cars only, but also the sites of the individual dealerships. For some reasons the dealerships' sites often show more cars than PAG's site

Now have fun with making the right decisions (a very exciting but sometimes nerve wrecking part of the P-ownership ) and keep us updated about the buying process

And if you go for a brandnew car: don't forget to ask your Rennteam-fellows about the right options to choose

PS: Thanx to everybody who made nice compliments about my seal/cocoa baby (and of course thanx Dreamcar for uploading the pic )

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

I love the Atlas Grey on mine. When I was choosing, my female friends all loved the Lagoon Green. It looks great on the Boxster and better than you'd imagine but I thought it was a bit feminine (or was I biased because of my friends?) My male friends were mostly keen on black or silver.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Carmon red metallic, if you find silver, gray or black too boring and the other colours to bright. I've seen one or two in the flesh as I drive by my OPC during my commute and it's a great color for the 987.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

    black/ special white interior

    or

    white/ terracota/cocoa

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

Seal grey definitely, great colour regardless of the dirt and grime; when it's clean it has a real depth to the colour. By far one of the better colours for the boxster. I've gone with the charcoal/black interior (a little bit conservative) with the aluminium sports dials and trim. I think it looks pretty good - but again it's down to personal taste.

Re: Getting a new 987s...but which color? Need input!

First off I think you should get what you like . What color speaks to you? What color when you see it makes you go wow when you see it? That is the color you should get. Are you concerned a lot about resale value? Than think conservative.

Personally I feel there is way to much silver/gray on the road nowadays at least in the US. Every other car on the road is silver/gray from Kia's all the way to big Mercedes. I have a silver Audi and every other Audi on the road is silver.

Speaking of yellow boxsters here you go, I think it rocks:
