    2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

This should be interesting. Possibly 800+HP? Smiley

FCA is planning a mic drop ahead of the New York Auto Show when it comes to American muscle cars. That is when the automaker will stage the world debut of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, a Hellcat on steroids, and what is expected to be the fastest muscle car in the world.

Sounds interesting but I had my share of RWD power monsters, no thanks. They are fun up to a point but then, they get tiresome (unless you have tons of other cars to choose from).

That's one quick car. no 0 - 140 mph in 9.65, which is 2 seconds faster than the 991 Turbo S. Unfortunately I don't think HvS is going to independently verify that claim. Smiley

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

Took a tesdrive in the Charger Hellcat a while ago and the traction issues make it no real fun to drive, unless you enjoy going sideways all the time. The Demon will be even worse (I assume).

More interesting is the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee with Hellcat engine, it has been confirmed to come.

Not sure about the price tag though, right now the new GLC 63 S AMG looks line the best offer in the SUV segment, even if it has less cargo space compared to the Grand Cherokee or Cayenne.

A Hellcat engine in the Jeep would be interesting indeed. And yes, the Demon is built to go fast in a straight line only, so it wouldn't be a great choice for much else. Smiley

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will be amazing but I'm afraid it won't be cheap and it won't (officially) come to Europe. I think the Trackhawk comes way too late...

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

    Interesting tidbit:

The dodge Demon is built for the drag strip, but it is illegal to run it at the drag strip as dictated by NHRA as it is too fast

It clocks in the 9s and thus needed a roll cage but it doesn't come with one

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

That car is on drag radials on a prepped track BTW, so not really indicative what will happen in real life. You'll probably never even near 3s with normal tires on a normal road.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

LOL. And look at the front tires!

The skinny front tires are there to minimize rolling resistance and to allow for better weight transfer during launch. I would imagine they are not street legal. The car does what it was designed to do very well though. The cheater slicks come with the car, they are just drag compond rubber with some sipes in them but they are street legal.

Just a cool idea that made it from the tech boatd to the street...just wow

They will sell them all GT3 style.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

This is exactly the kind of car that captured my interest as a teenager -- before I discovered sports cars and Porsche.

I have to say that a very "American" type of fun is drag racing.  That's why Tesla has so much purchase in the USA.

I never understood why US car companies never tried to make a decent sports car which isn't only suitable for the drag strip. Only exception is probably the Corvette...

Just imagine the Hellcat engine in an AWD car with the weight of a 911 Turbo S for half the price or so...

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

Chrysler has a long history of not doing things "right" and that is the concern.  The platform of the Challenger is ancient with parts dating back to the pre-Daimler-Benz merger days with its alliance with Renault.  Parts of the platform were first developed in the 1980s with a car was called the Premier; there was nothing premier about that car.  The Mercedes merger added the 1980s E Class irs to that aged platform.

One of our old businesses produced tooling for the auto industry and even into the 1990s, producing tooling for Chrysler was a nightmare.  Chrysler had myriad sheet metal suppliers that produced parts to different specifications, even having locating openings in different positions and shapes.  Everything was built to flexible tolerance and standards, as a result, we did little business with Chrysler.  Other suppliers took similar stances.

These problems have never left the company and are part of its corporate structure that Daimler-Benz or Fiat have exorcised away.

    Re: 2018 Challenger Hellcat 'Demon'

Yeah, well, Porsche still puts the engine in the wrong place in the 911.

These are systemic problems with the corporation as a whole and their approach to material quality and grade, not a problem with the Demon itself. I think expectations might be running a little high, and it would be wrong to compare this with other cars or expecting it to deviate from the company's overall quality philosophy. This car was designed to go 1320 feet faster than any other production car, and I think it does that quite well. They did that by stuffing a monster motor into a pedestrian car and adding some trick racing bits. This is how the muscle car  craze started in the first pace. Call me nostalgic, but I think it's pretty damn cool that they built this car.

+1.. I find it refreshing that companies are still making true muscle cars in this day and age. Something to celebrate if you ask me.  It may not be to certain European tastes but this shouldn't detract from what is a unique and very focussed car Smiley

It's not like the EU companies make that many affordable sports cars. All I can think of are M, RS, and AMG models. US automakers just generally aren't luxury oriented, thus their sport cars still have to be cheap. Corvette makes world leading sports cars FYI...

Perhaps that should read, "wonder what a Chiron would do in a quarter mile, wearing near drag slicks..."  Also, if you look at the shots of the Demon, it is wearing smaller rubber, than what is typically fitted to the car, on the front.  This is a one dimensional car, especially when compared with the Chiron.

I don't see the greatness in that car. One might as well bolt a jet engine to a wheelbarrow... utterly useless but wohooo so fast in a straight line.

Thats exactly my point. They could sell tons more if they would do it "right". I guess they don't care about sales numbers. 😜 The Hellcat engine is a treat.
