what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

My 06 997 C2S coupe is finally here! Fortunately, or unfortunately, the dealer is 1.200 miles away in Bellingham Washington and we live in SoCal. So, we are flying to Seattle next Friday, and will enjoy a nice drive down the Washington, Oregon and California coastline to properly break-in the new Carrera S. Having not owned a recent vintage Porsche, I'm going to have to break the bad news to the girlfriend that there isn't a lot of room in the car for luggage. Will a small, "airline approved" rolling bag fit up front, or is only loose, small duffle bags that will fit?

    My specs:
Atlas with two-tone black and stone grey leather
    Carrera Sport wheels
    leather rear center console
    CUV "carrera" console bin lid
    Nav, Bose, 666 phone module
    power and hot seats
    self dimming mirrors
    black dials from std Carrera
    sport exhaust and shifter

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

You can easily get a airline cabin approved roller case in the front trunk; I have a 997 C4S, which has a slightly smaller trunk, due to the front differential restricting the size, and regularly carry a hard case that is larger than the airline approved version. And there's still space for a lossely packed soft bag - or coats/jackets etc.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

Congrats! Nice spec! Don't worry about space, you fit 1 "airline approved" rolling bag plus 1 "soft" bag in front. If you fold the back seats you have lots of additional space for more luggage.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

    Congrats on your new car!

A rolling bag will fit without a problem, probably two. I have placed a full size suitcase(not jumbo) in the trunk as well. It was tight, but fit. After a year of ownership, we now use only softbags in the front, and if necessary, we can throw a soft bag or two behind the front seats.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

I quote from the Porsche Driver's selection catalogue:

All C2 911 Carrera Coupe will hold Porsche lugage with the following dimensions and capacities:

    Front
    One ultra light PTS trolly case XL (WAP 035 200 15) 56 X 36 X 40 cm
    OR
    One PTS trolly case XL (WAP 035 042 10)56 X 36 X 40 cm capacity 80 lites

    Rear storage area
    One PTS briefcase (WAP 035 083 14) 50 X 39 X 12 cm capacity 20 litres

    AND
    One PTS trolley case M(WAP 035 041 10) 56 X 36 X25 cm capacity 50 litres

    OR

Two PTS trolley case ultra light S (WAP 035 201 15) 52 X 20 X25 cm capacity 45 litres Catalogue is ambiguous here as it actually quotes PTS trolley case ultra light M but there is no listing for an ultralight M only S also the illustration shows 2 small cases.

    Hope this helps.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

congrats on your car and welcome to the P-car family. don't forget for just the 2 of you, there is still a lot of room in the backseat area! I think soft bags will be just fine for it.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

My wife and I travel in our Boxster all the time and there's no problem with luggage. And trust me, we/she don't travel light. I can even fit a little travel guitar behind the passenger seat if she scoots forward just a bit. I typically get the back trunk (aka the Oven) and use a fully sized duffle, while she puts two good sized carry-on sized bags in the front.

I think the 997 is actually better, as you have to be careful what you put in the rear trunk/Oven in the Boxster. The rear seat in the 997 doesn't have the temp problem and is probably roomier, although a bit more difficult to load large things into (get the Cab and solve that problem by lowering the top to load and unload!).

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

Congrats on the new car! You can fit surprisingly large amount of stuff on a Carrera. Ask RC, he has even fit his bicycle at the back. Make use of the rear seat, it's a big space back there.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

Enjoy your new car. The front trunk will hold two full size soft side bags stacked side by side vertically. By the time you add the additional space available in the back seat area you have enough luggage space for two adults, two weeks.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

Thanks to all for the info - she will be delighted that she can take more than we take when we fly our LongEZ experimental plane - it requires *really * careful packing!

Dkreidel: You're going to have a great drive! I actually bought my first Porsche from a dealer in Seattle and drove it back to LA, same as you. It was a great drive. The costline is so beautiful, especially this time of year. Be sure to spend the night in Big Sur at the Post Ranch Inn, if you can get a reservation.

Don't forget to bring a camera and post pics on Rennteam!

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

    DKreidel,
You fly a LongEZ? That is one of the planes designed by Burt Rutan, isn't it? That man did amazing things, moist beautiful planes in the world! (Sorry to get offtopic guys! )

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

OT - yes, I've built 2 LongEZ's. I met Burt in 1979 and started #1 in 1980. #1 has been flying since 4 July 1983; #2 since late '89. Burt Rutan is indeed a very. very clever guy!

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

    Dick,

Congratulations on your new baby- sounds gorgeous!!!

Please post pictures when you get the chance.

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

No problem, we drove to italy last year( 1350km from belgium)
    and see our trunk:

Re: what fits in the "trunk" of a 997?

As you can see above a big samsonite rectangular suitcase with "clothhangers" in it can be vertically placed and fits
Since our car is a cab and we drove with the winddeflector upright, we could put two airplane trolleys on the backseats.
We had half my wife's dressing in it
