Of course he doesn't want to come back in a McLaren, who wants to drive one?

Can't blame him, only a couple have an option to win, the rest are just there to pick up a check at the end of the season, he knows he is still the best rounded driver on the grid, drives the wheels of the car just to beat teams like Sauber and most of the time the car won't even finiish the race... as soon as he gets the chance he will be doing LeMans 24hrs with Porsche, but that probably wont happen until he retires from F1 since McLaren or Honda do not have a team in LeMans unlike Indy.

I read he would like to compete in and win the "big Three" (Monaco F1 GP, Indy 500 and LeMans).

Yes, he said that himself in an interview

Here is an interesting quote off the record by some famous driver I just heard.
"If a washout F1 driver thinks he can just waltz in conquer Indy, he is in for a big surprise, finishing the race would be an accomplishment, hell he will likely finished behind that woman."
Joking aside, I feel sorry for Alonso. He is a class driver, but have somehow managed to mess up his life in Formula 1 by wrong choices in terms of teams.
It will not be a walk in the park to go into Indy, but I would at least like to see him do well. Same goes if he one day decides to participate in Le Mans.

"Washed out" Montoya did just that 2 years ago ... that famous driver is not only a chaouvanist and shows lots of insecurity and inferiority towards F1 but seems has the memory of a fish.
The thing is, Alonso is not washed out (not yet at least), he may have the worst car on the grid, but there is a reason he is the best paid driver in F1, and if he had a Mercedes, he would be the favorite on the betting shops. That said, given all the luck involved in winning Indy, experience in the oval of other drivers, and other factors, it is not likely he will win it. Still a lot moreof people will be tuning to Indy500 this year though.
Personally I'm not going to lie, a big part of me would love to see an F1 driver waltz in and beat all the oval track drivers

Carlos maybe you are a little bit biased cause Alonso is a fellow countryman :)
Actually Montoya won Indy twice, first time in 2000.
Alonso was paid a lot simply because he is stuck in the worst car on the grid. The extra money is needed simply just to get him to drive the damn car.
The source I quoted is a seasoned veteran, he also simply stated that no one will be willingly help Alonso draft, most will leave him out to dry on a separate line, and will even change line just to not help Alonso. The American racers simply doesn't LIKE Alonso period. Hell even within the Andretti team the other guys may not be willing to help Alonso either.

Nick, if he were at Mercedes he would be earning even more. The fact that they are willing to pay him that much to drive the Mac says a lot. Alonso has been the best paid driver in the grid for years consistently, even when at Ferrari.

Why is that?
That is because oval track drivers have an inferiority chip on their shoulders against "real" track drivers like F1 drivers and won't let one come in as a wild card and win Indy. Its not about Alonso, it would be the same with any of the current high profile F1 drivers.

More like territorial instinct. They don't like outsiders to come in and clean 'their' house'.

It's going to bring huge international attention to their race though, maybe they appreciate that in the end, its also high praise to their race that an active top F1 driver is wants to do their race mid season. I bet audiences are going to be off the charts for Indy500 this year. It will also be good for F1 in US too.
Takes some balls from Alonso to try it though and step out of his comfort zone with all odds against him.
Apparently Button will be doing Monaco in his place, wish him the best as I like Button but unfortunately the car will probably not even finish the race.

Finally some one have the balls to try....only Hulk was a real man trying the 24 h le mans..and winning it...so cool..and well done.
I wish we had more F1 drivers in other races...so much more fun for the motorsport...I would love to see Vet on a Ferrari at the 24h of Le Mans...immagine how much more attention it will have...just like the old days....
it is time to do something with the motorsport...

Whoopsy:Too bad Ferrari doesn't have the balls to compete in the LMP1 class, nor McLaren for that matters............

LMP1 proto with chance of winning...how much money does that suck...probably too much to do on top of F1...
