Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

Hi All, I have a 997S -20mm and have MichPS1 on it. If I run them at 33-39 they feel extremely hard and abrupt on the road with all small bumps. I love the tightness of the suspension but the hardshness is driving me crazy. Any ideas?
    many thanx

Scanners, I feel for you. My non sports suspension, non-PASM 997 with 19's are really hard as it is. I can imagine that with your suspension setting it will be super hard! Our roads just isn't made for these kind of cars...

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

Try running them at lower pressure. Unfortunately there's not much you can do given the road conditions and your sport suspension.

You have 19" wheels, the 18s" should give a slightly smoother ride, but not much.

After all, it's not a Lexus!

If you do run lower pressures, be careful to monitor your actual tire pressure as too low a pressure could lead to wheel damage. From what I have read on other posts, wheel replacement is quite expensive.

I have the PASM (-20 mm is not available in the U.S.), and I got the tire pressure monitoring system as an option. It provides added protection should my tire pressure run low or should I decide to reduce the pressure below the 33/39 recommended.

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

ive had michelin and pirelli oem so far and the michelins for me are less noisy take bumps easier and more comfortable.

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

For those that have tried different tires on the 996/997, which have given you the most confortable ride? he is using PS's which are fairly sporty and stiff. So Conti's should be significantly more confortable but its been a while since I tried those and can't compare. Any thoughts? Looking for a softer tire would alkways be a better solution that lowering tire pressures bellow factory recomendations.

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

In Porsche Excellence (probably March, April issue 2006?) Walter Rohrl stated that 18" rims were the proper choice on the 997 for "the sensitive shoe"... not sure as to Herr Rohrl's definition of "sensitive", but I'll bet that it's going to be difficult to smooth out the ride on your ROW car with -20mm and 19" rims... regardless of tire.

Did you consider moving to 18" rims? I would guess that retrofitting the -20mm suspension is impossible.

Sorry, mate! Hey, there must be some smooth roads somewhere Down Under... we even have a few in the central US... <g>

    Good luck,

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

Good point about the 18" rim and tires comment. I too feel on track the 18" PS2 N1 tires are more predictable compare with 19" PS2 N1 tires. Maybe switching to 18 is a better ride choice...

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

Thanks guys for your comments. It appears the PS2 were brand new and very hard from start. After a 1000k they are softening up and -3psi all round they feel very good indeed. I tried the pasm etc..before getting this car, but the grip and excitement from this setup is something to be believed and well worth persuing. The LSD for a start seems to catapult you out of corners in the dry and wet beyond your senses. I agree that 18s may be the ultimate for this setup but IMHO how could I change the awsome lowslung/bigwheel look of this car. AND its unmodified! and stock! for insurance! wow!
    many thnx again.... Scanners.

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

I have pirelli on 19" 997 - pzero and tried M. ps/2 on my BMW before ,, my feeling is the pirelli more comfi and less noise.. but the ps/2 grib is far better..

Re: Which are the most confortable OEM tires for the 997S?

Tires have softened up dramatically after 1000k, ive now gone back to the stand tyre pressures. 230-270kpa COLD.
It turns on a pin! and the instant response of brakes and throttle is totally lagless and electrifying. Im excited! WOW!!!
Has anybody else noticed the difference with new tyres like this before ( being really hard and noisy till they bed in?)
