raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

laste last night driving down the A34 towards trent vale stoke on trent, i came across porsche 911 convertible of which i think may have been a carrera 4, although with it being dark i couldnt see it very good...

we gets to a set of traffic lights and he charges off i'm not far behind him, my car a mk3 golf vr6 2.8. so i catch him up and have another go through the curvey roads outside town...

but the best bit was at another set of traffic lights same again he pulls of quicker as the vr6 seems to suffer from some sort of ''electronic'' lag in first..

but as soon as i'm in 2nd gear (it has long gear ratios 65 mph in sencond and 100mph in 3rd) i stay right at the side of him i dont know what he was thinking looking in his mirror and still he my headlights at the rear side of him

but for how far infront he was getting on the 0 to 60 its probibly the 3.6 5.3 sec 911

i was well pleased as its not everyday you get to try to keep up with a porsche!

when i start racing 1 half of my brain is saying take it easy if you get caught doing such a speed etc.....

and another side just says you dont race a porsche everyday so floor it and try to get passed

obviously this is the part of my mind which seems to win everytime..

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

you floored it, he for sure did not or else.....was that a golf in my rearview mirror ? maybe not...anyway...its too far behind already so i cant really tell.

Not really. A standard 996 Carrera 4 convertible, possibly a 4S with Tiptronic won't be much faster at low speeds than a Golf, when looking at it from the Golf driver's perspective. When you look at the times, things seem much more different than visually.

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

911digital, its good to keep people on their toes!

A34 is a nice road, I use it from M4 towards Winchester a bit, normally in my S3. I'll have to keep an eye open for you. VR6 and S3 should be a closer match!!

Tiptronic or not, the VR6 maybe closer off the line but once they roll good bye VW .

Yes, I meant off the line, up to 100, maybe 120 km/h. After that it isn't even funny.

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

It's hard to believe that there was a time no one with a stock car would think about racing a Porsche unless they had bad A$$ italin car and now days even the little Japanese car can mess with the P-cars

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

Had experience with both cars...no way the guy was really going at it...

Well, I did go head-to-head with a Tip 996 C4 Cab several year ago in an Audi A6 3.0 - the difference up to 140 km/h wasn't awe inspiring, really. Two people in both cars. That's why I believe what this guy wrote.

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

When i had my first car a ford escort i use to thrash need cosworths just to see them take off

What is funny with the golf is that people dont know a 2.8 is under the bonnet! they seems to think the mk3 golfs are slow..

the noise it was making i would ahve thought he was trying lets not forget that the vr6 does 0 - 60 in 7 seconds and if that was a 5 sec to 60 911 then it doesnt supprise to see its not far behind or in some gears side by side....

    gear ratios in the vr6 are 1st 45, 2nd 65, 3rd 100, 4th 130, 5th 150 by then the needle should be well off the 160mph speedometer..

lets also not forget they are both non turbo so its just engines and weight of the car, where is if the porsche had been a turbo i'd have gone backwards........

hey at least its the same speeds a ferrari 308 gts!

its supprising to see what cars theses days can beat sports cars......

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

0-60 in 7 vs 5 is a HUGE difference...If cars are side by side, there is something wrong with the driver...

And Crash, I have another story Porsche vs Audi.
I could trash a A6 4.2quattro with a 986S boxster on the highway...do you believe it? Neither can I, but this is what happened with speeds over >200KPH

Yes, I believe you. The Audi's (old A6) ridiculous gearing and AWD don't make it a good candidate for high-speed races. 270 horsepower in a lightweight, aerodynamic RWD, 6-speed sportscar with closely-spaced gear ratios, compared to a big and heavy Audi A6 with 300 horsepower, bigger frontal area, a slow Tiptronic automatic with only 4 gears (the 5th gear is for cruising) and a heavy AWD. Your story is perfectly believable.
Regarding a Carrera Cab, the A6 I drove does 0-100 km/h in about 7 seconds and the Carrera does it in OVER 5 seconds. A second and a half doesn't really show that much.
It's also funny when you see a turbodiesel on a highway and you give it all you've got. You're going much faster than him, but he just won't go away . Same effect, where differences in the real world seem smaller than on paper.

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

Well, for sure I know of cars where on paper and in real world I have been trashed in high speed curves (Alpine highway)...and that was by a M5 :-) ...the old V8 one that is...

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

I once overtook a 911 with my mountainbike... beat that

Easy, I did it on foot

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

its also in the gears speed which has a big affect, try doing 40 - 60 mph behind someone and try overtaking them, sometimes you just dont have enough room..

and it gets difficult when they accellerate when your trying to get passed them....

lets not forget that cars can have their good and bad days, the other day the vr6 felt right boggy and not really accelering good, where as tonight it felt super, do you ever notice some days the cars drives better than others..

i was hoping the driver of the 911 would be a member of the forum, i would liek to know if he was trying to get away, from where i was it sounded like a full open throttle!!

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

even snails can when there parked up..

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

I recall seeing a test back in the eighties, that showed that two cars with appr. 1 sec apart in 0-100 km/h times were fairly even all the way.
It all depends on WHEN the engine kicks in and WHERE the pull/accelleration is at its peak.

    Let's take an exaggerated example:
*2 cars, both do 0-100 km/h in 10 seconds flat.
    * Car A accelerates from 0-90 km/h in 1 second, and then spends 9 seconds getting from 90 to 100.

    * Car B accelerates from 0-10 km/h in 9 seconds, then spends 1 second getting from 10-100 km/h.

So, both do 1-100 in 10 secs, but car A would be far ahead of car B when doing a drag race.

Naturally, these numbers would never apply like this to the real world, but I have seen quite a few tests, where cars with the same 0-100 time do NOT run side-by-side all the way.

Having said all this, it is very possible that the Golf VR6 driver can keep up with the 911. Not necessarily for the reasons sketched above, but because both drivers need to do a perfect acceleration with no hick-ups or bad shifts to make their cars perform according to factory specs.

Hence you can outrun a Lambo Diablo in a Golf VR6....but only till the Diablo driver finds the gears and floors it

As fars as I understood 911digital, the VR6 was left in the dust after the 120 km/h mark, which is only natural.
Whenever people pull up next to me in a GTi or similar and say "Hey! Wanna race..?", I simply reply: "Why not. Let's go to 220 km/h and see who hits 260 first...."
    (Yes, I am a regular Vin Diesel...hehe )

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

when we had a mk 2 golf gti my bro tried to race a porsche 911 gt3 i think.

and before he could get it into 2nd the porsche had gone!

now thats what happens when you get an 8 - 9 second 1.8 gti and take on a porsche.... now we have a vr6 we have a better chance at staying with some...

to take on a gt3 we would be twin turbo conversion on the vr6... and then we shall never get out run by a porsche..

or better still buy a hpa converted vw golf for $54000 which does 0 - 60 in 3.2 seconds..

The GT3 is a 4-second car. The Carrera 4 Cab, with Tiptronic, is a high-5-second car. Taking on a 4-second car with a 9-second car isn't even funny. Taking on a 5,5-second car with a 7-second car will boost your ego.

well its done that for sure... my heart was really pulsing at the time... it was banging more than a subwoofer!

i think that was an over-contradiction....

Re: raced a black 911 convertible and kept up...

what are we comparing? there is something wrong with the P driver, no way a vr6 could keep up with a good 911 driver..

When you said ''there must be something wrong with the p car driver, i've just had that gary clail ''human nature'' song in my head..(its a song which never goes)

where he says : theres something wrong with human nature, then it keeps reapeating nature....

and i've just had gary clail screaming:::theres something wrong with that p car driver, driver, driver, driver! i nearly burst out laughing...
