but wouldn't the whole 'charm' or character be gone ?

I love the fact that the g feels archaic

Well - I agree to disagree. As a collector car I agree. But as I daily driver I quickly get used to all those gizmos. All those Assistants are just making things easier and more comfortable. Especially in our overcrowded cities and high-ways.

    Re: G63 this time round

Lras, surely you have a point. I am not contesting whih will be the better car. surely the new one will be.

Its more of that I feel the way the current G behaves is part of its charm. Not just the boxy looks. When you drive it it makes you smile as it behaves so different from what we got used to.

as for noone1's comment about the interior. surely you have a point. but in fact I do find the interior of the 63 quite good. the rear is rubbish that's true.

I clearly understand what you are saying. I almost bought a G. The rear was ok for our little one, she liked it. The front is tip top, agree. The only thing I saw to improve was the High-Way feeling, which might not matter that much in countries where you are not going to drive much faster than 130 km/h. The reason we didn't buy one was that I did see the new one around the corner. If this wouldn't have been we probably would have got one.

Simplicity rules. I can see it on our little 60 year old Porsche. The car is so simple, has not Gizmos but it is so much fun to drive. The smile you are talking about must be similar. Also the SLS. Not much Gizmos, just simply driving fun.

Guys, I am thinking all the time about a G63. This is a classic, nothing on the SUV market can beat it.

I love my wife's Cayenne S Diesel as well, very comfortable and great quality feel but I would switch it for a G63 anytime. blush

me too - except that I would know that I would be very unhappy with the consumption.......which seems to be the mainreason here why People sell it again.....not that they cannot afford but it's kind of "annoying". I will wait for the new model and how it will look from inside and then make a decision - hopefully Prices of the old model will come my way - they are rather steady compared to other Mercedes models in the used car market

    Re: G63 this time round

Guys... the new car is around the corner. Wait a year or two and you will have all the Cayenne comfort and power, the G look and class and of course all the Mercedes gadgets and Gizmos. The new G will be a complete package!

Just wait for the new G until model year 2018 starts and this will be in July 2017. The "old" G will not see 2018. The current series runs out middle of 2017 except of the G350 D professional, a kind of stripped G wagon with less comfort but a lot ambition  Not sure if I will like the new one. yes

    That's what I'm saying!

BTW - the first car is the AMG camo, the second is a smaller engine. The smaller one doesnt have the side pipes (like today) on the AMG we can't see the driver side - lets hope for the side pipe!:

    Re: G63 this time round

Mercedes-Benz has hit a new production record for its off-road icon with 20,000 G-Classes produced in one year for the first time in the model’s 37 years history. The legendary G-Class has been in production on behalf of Mercedes-Benz at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria since 1979.

The legendary G-Class has been in production on behalf of Mercedes-Benz at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria since 1979, and continues to be extremely popular with customers. More than a quarter of a million vehicles have been delivered to customers since the first model of the G-Class was introduced.

The G-Class that set up this year’s production record is also a very special example. The white Mercedes-AMG G63 has various “designo manufaktur” features, for example manually applied “designo mystic white bright” paintwork and an interior with designo leather manufactured in the in-house sewing.

“The individualisation and continuous technical optimisation of the G-Class contribute to the great success of the original off-road icon which still makes no compromises when it comes to off-road,” says Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, head of the off-road product group at Mercedes-Benz. “The production of 20,000 G-Classes in one year confirms the high demand for the ‘G’ and likewise the quality of our vehicles, something that is highly appreciated by our customers. I am very pleased and also proud that some of our employees have been on board since production started around 37 years ago.”

Mercedes’ iconic G-Class will be replaced by a new generation in 2018. The new model will be built on an entirely new platform, being wider and lighter. New engines, including the latest straight-six units will be featured alongside state of the art assistance systems lifted from the E-Class and S-Class.

    Re: G63 this time round

Insane car in every aspect! I just hope they will keep "boxy" design on new generation too!

    Re: G63 this time round

It's unbelievable how this thing is doing.

In the Munich AMG Center they sell the G like hot bread. After quite a time of searching for a G63 with all the goodies I want to see on it, I found a very suitable G63 in Designo Magno-Platin. (Pic)

    IMG_9921.JPG

The car has everything I would have liked to have in my own order if I had executed one.
When I saw the car, it was just 2 days in the showroom and I was sure I wanted to buy exactly this car because I reluctantly place own orders.

The next day I went with my wife to the dealer, since she herself is a big G-fan and of course she wanted to see the G63 before buying it.. Well, the end of the short story is foreseeable: my dream car had already been sold. laughlaughlaugh

Similar vehicles will not be available in the next few weeks. yes
Thats bad luck I would say...

    Re: G63 this time round

That's a really cool spec, shame you didn't get it. I wouldn't be the first to order a car in matte paint, but it does suit the G.

    Good luck with the search!

    Re: G63 this time round

Wouldn't buy one new with the next gen model right around the corner. Should be significantly improved.

    Re: G63 this time round

Of course it will be improved. But will it be the same "original" G? I doubt it. There are a lot of examples for so called retro cars which are far away from a success. Just to name some: do you remember the VW-Beetle Flop? Or the retro Ford Thunderbird? Not to speak of the Chrysler Crossfire, the unsuccessful child from the marriage between Daimler and Chrysler . Like you can read above: the "old" G was produced over 20.0000 times in its prelast production year. Any further questions? wink

    Re: G63 this time round

Yeah, but it reached it's limit in evolution: a big overhaul is needed and will make the old model a dinosaur. The New Beetle was just a rebodied Golf, nothing more. This G redesign has nothing to do with going retro Smiley

    Re: G63 this time round

Except the new G wagon isn't a retro car and the 2016 G isn't the "original G." It's been produced and refined for a long time. It's not like the current G wagon looks identical to one from 10 or 20 years ago. The interior and exterior of the car has changed over time, as have mechanical things.

Old G produced 20000 this year. Next G will sell even better most likely. It's just a car that's in fashion for wealthy people in recent years.

Besides, we've already seen what the new one looks like more or less. It's not like there is any big surprise hiding under the camo.

I think you're quite wrong here. Designwise the new G 2018 is a exact copy of the old one just with a wider body (so far we can see by now). That isn't retro?? If they wanted to design a new car with a new shape, it would have looked like a Mercedes ML or something  Smiley

    Re: G63 this time round

the difference between current model and new model is mainly the ladder frame.

the current G is what it is and has been for 35 years because of its ladder frame and axles. this is what makes it drive and feel the way it does with its good and bad attributes.

the new G will lose that feel. it will be a more comfortable and surely a much better car but it will not retain that G feel of the current model.

that is neither a good nor a bad thing. it simply depends on what you are after. personally, I want that archaic G feel and that is what makes the car special to me. then I also enjoy driving vintage cars. are they better than modern cars, certainly not. are they fun....hell, yes.

Judging by some current G class owners, seems that after introduction of new model, current one will go up in value smiley
