    PASM failure

Anyone else had the "PASM failure" message flash up on the dot matrix display in the rev counter?

I was driving down the M1 a few hours ago (in the rain and snow - hmmm luverly), when the car beeped and flashed up this message. No mechanical symptoms at the time, but the PASM button was inoperative, and the Sport button resulted in a "Sport mode failure" message.

After about 20 miles, the suspension started firming up gradually until after about 40 miles it was bone shaker mode. I kept going (not wanting to be stranded in the snow on the M1), so I didn't kill the ignition (to reboot) until I got home.

When I did, the little red exclamation mark had gone away, and no errors were reported.

    Anyone else seen this?

    Gary

PS Shortly before this happened, the oil measurement display appeared for no apparent reason after I'd started moving. This is slightly odd given that you can't measure the oil with the engine running

    Re: PASM failure

This seems like some electrical problem. Your dealer should be able to replace modules and fix it.

    Re: PASM failure

Taking it in next week for a diagnostic. Let's see what the fault log download says.

    Re: PASM failure

Did your dealer figure out what the problem was? The same has just happened to my C4S - two weeks and 200km old!

    Re: PASM failure

The dealer said that the diagnostic log showed no indication of a failure, so the message must have been some kind of glitch. He asserted that they had "recalibrated the system" (not sure what that means), but I do have to say that since then (well over a year now), the problem has not manifested itself again.

Since this incident (and the ignition key problem caused by a faulty tiptronic selector), I've had over 5,000 miles of trouble free motoring. Everything seems to be working just fine thankfully. The teething problems are now (I'm glad to say) long forgotten!

Hopefully your dealer can find some kind of resolution - sorry I haven't got anymore specific explaination to help you. My suspicion at the time was that they may have applied some kind of software patch, but if your car is brand new from the factory then I would expect it to have the latest firmware already installed, so it can't have been that.

I agree one thousand percent. Just the thought scares the cr*p out of me. Can you imagine having software/hardware problems on these cars in ten years?

Idea of keeping any modern car beyond initial, full-scale factory warranty period is prob not advisable.....

Air bag systems only have an alleged 10 yr lifespan anyway; besides, car prices haven't really increased in past 15+ yrs, while lease terms have improved markedly w/lower interest rates; and does anyone really care whether one's cell phone, iPod, PDA, PC, plasma TV, etc is still functioning 10 yrs (or even 5 yrs) from now????....even if it is, it'll be woefully out-of-date....

Also, I suspect performance/safety technologies behind advanced PSM, ABS, airbags, crumple zone design, etc have saved lives/health of many drivers, more than offsetting hassles of occasional glitches...and shortened optimally usable lifespan due to tech obsolescence

Yeah, that's very sad. I had a couple of sports cars I bought new and took good care of and held onto (14 and 17 years). I was hoping to keep current 997S as long but looks like I have to get rid of it well before then.

    Funny how things change... .

I am not as fortunate. The 'PASM failure' warning kept recurring and evertime it happened, the suspension became very firm, probably firmer than the PASM Sport setting.

The Porsche distributor collected my car a couple of days ago and their diagnostic computer has since confirmed the PASM control unit has failed. They are now waiting for a new PASM control unit to arrive from Germany. I am disappointed they don't even carry such vital part in their inventory.

With hindsight, I should have ordered my C4S with -20mm sport suspension. I find the PASM normal setting a touch soft, and the 'sport' setting too harsh and not useable. With the -20mm sport suspension, there is no PASM electronics failue to worry about.
