    Engine longevity in 997S?

What kind of life can one expect?

    400000km? More?

    Imho, more if:

    a) you received a good engine.
    b) you use it as a daily driver.
    c) you warm up the engine oil before redlining it and cool it down before turning it off.
    d) you follow the factory service intervals and perform used oil analysis at every or every other 20,000 km oil change to build a reference and give you warning if something major is slowly failing.
    e) you use http://www.toptiergas.com/

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

    400000?????
    ahahahha!!!

    200000

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

    Weird double standard:

If it is MY engine (bought car new) I guess I'll be confident that's it's got a somemore life to it after 100K miles.

If the car is USED I wouldn't buy it (consider it shot) after 75K miles.

The other thing to think about: How much mileage do you need to start wondering if you're going to get stranded with a breakdown? IMO, I start to consider the thing unreliable around 75k miles.

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

I'm used to American pushrod V8's to easily breeze past 1/4 million miles before needing a rebuild, assuming all servicing was done promptly and the vehicle not abused.

I'd be damn pissed if my $95K Porsche was wheezing at only 100,000 miles. That's nothing.

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

I think that is all depends on your experience for the first 75k miles. If they were good and reliable, I think you can trust the next 25k will also be good as well.

The 911SC is known for surpassing 300k miles typically before any major work (later models often need valve guides well before that). I think the M96/M97 is too new to know how it's going to last.

On the aircooled motors (and dry-sump water motors), you can rebuild the motors with new piston/cylinders if/when needed. The M96/M97 is disposable...

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

I remember an article in Excellence where they had occasion to tear down a 996 motor with about 100k miles, I don't remember exactly, and it had negligble wear and they concluded that it had a lot of miles left before a rebuild/replacement would be necessary.

That's encouraging. I would also guess that it should make 150k miles without too much trouble. Not so sure about 300k km though (240k miles)...

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

Great. Thanks for the encouragement beyond 100K+ miles. Will revise my thinking on mileage.

    The other issue? AGE.

How many YEARS before engine electronics, rubber, gaskets and seals start to fail?

You question reminded me of the comments brought up by Dan L about "Tin Whiskers" in this thread:

    http://www.rennteam.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=997&Number=217017

What kind of time scale are we looking at for these effects to become pronounced?

This all depends on the conditions in which the car lives. The seals, wiring, etc. on my 96 993 are like new - the car rarely sits outside. If you park it inside and don't live near the beach or other harsh environment, they'll last a long time.

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

Unfortunately, it is still dificult to predict failure but analysis has shown tin whiskers to grow best at 50 degrees C and at 85% RH. Those conditions resulted in higher density and longer length in the tin whiskers. If the printed circuit board is densely packed (which we see in more modern designs today) then the whiskers will fail the board sooner as they short out a circuit.

    Re: Engine longevity in 997S?

I'm right with you. A 90K+ car should see 100K like its just getting broken in well.

DAILY DRIVING IS producing extended engine life?????
