    Turbo Driving Impressions

    Like Atomic, I drove new Turbos in Austria last week. Here are my impressions:

    1. Fantastic car, feels like a V8, much more linear and powerful throughout the rev range than my modified 996TT. The car feels solid and integrated, in addition to being extremely fast. The exhaust and engine sound is far better than on my 996TT. You get the feeling that everything is working to make the sound--not just the exhaust.
    2. Tremendously secure in all conditions--from 160mph on the autobahn, to hard rain, to snow, to all sorts of curves and bumps. If there is a more secure and confident sports car in all conditions--buy it.
    3. Tip is wonderful, especially in manual mode. A better choice for drivers who want convenience and smoothness, and who want to relax a bit in heavy start and stop traffic. Manual seems faster once you get started, and seems louder as well. Also (and this may have been the fault of one of the Tip cars), the sport mode effects (suspension damping and "overboost") seem to be more pronounced in the manual cars. But tip is no slouch at all, and may very well be faster overall--it is just so darn smooth that it could be deceiving in its power and speed. Manual, in sport mode, lurches a bit starting out in first, while Tip is perfect every time. But manual still seems more engaging after you get rolling (but I would order a short shifter). As one participant put it well--"the manual is more raw and fun, the tip is more smooth and relaxing". But this should not be thought of as one system versus the other--both systems are knockout--it is just a matter of what type of conditions the driver will be in the most (city, country, track, etc).
    3. Couldn't tell difference in normal or ceramic brakes, at least in the two days of driving we experienced.
    4. Cocoa interior is very attractive, and a good complement to GT silver.
    5. Rear quarter panel intakes need to be integrated better. They still look "added on", and add an extra set of lines to an already busy style from the rear of doors back.
    7. Exhaust surrounds look cheap, and I would personally prefer a different exhaust opening design.
    8. Car looks fantastic from the rear--very wide and imposing.
    9. Painted lower side panels look terrific.
    10. I like design of multi-function steering wheel better than the round hub of standard wheel.
    11. This is a splendid automobile, very powerful, confident and integrated. A major advancement beyond the 996, in my view the best all around sports car out there.

    Must have been quiet an event. Thanks for your report.

    What about the new TIP functionality, like the FastBack. Is it just that much of a difference to the old TIP ?

    RC, I will send you some pics to post. It rained a lot, as you will see, but a great opportunity to test the car in all sorts of conditions.

    Regarding the functionality of the new Tip, I can only say that a driving partner said the new Tip was much better than the old one. I have always driven a manual, and did find myself reaching for the shifter out of habit. Also, I never really mastered sharp (hairpin type) turns in the Tip. I tend to steer with my right hand and press the tip button with my left, and with the steering wheel turned sharply I was always worried I would hit the wrong button or miss it entirely, especially on the multi-function wheel with all its other buttons.

    Body color painted lower side panels under each door is an option, and one I would recommend. I will post a red car picture tomorrow that will illustrate...

    I'm ordering my lower side panels not painted, as my understanding is that we cannot get the front and rear lower panels painted?

    Porsche seems to have most of the press cars with the lower panels not painted?

    That's also why I won't order it. It all should match

    I ordered mine painted as to move in the correct direction- it should be cheaper to paint the front only later if possible and necessary.

    I too don't really like the exhuast design as well with the new Turbo. Hope the tts might look better?

    One thing that I really noticed about those exhaust tips is that they appeared to be "brown" most of the time. I'm not sure if this is because it was dirty or the metal actually turned brown? It didn't look very good overall, IMHO.

    Strangely enough, I thought I'd like the "Y" multifunction steering wheel at first but once I'd driven one, I couldn't get over how thin the rims were. I wasn't able to drive aggressively around the corners confidently. Once I'd gotten a chance to try one with the circular sport steering wheel, plus a manual and the thicker rims, that was more like it! The circular steering wheel eventually grew on me so much that I changed my order from the multifunction to the sport one with the thicker rims! Bottom line is if you like driving in tight switchback roads, on the track, etc. then get the sport steering wheel with the thicker rims!

    I didn't see the Guards red with the lower panels painted. They had 20 cars there but only 8 out in the lot at a given time.

    I made the same change when ordering my c2scab now I love the look and feel of the sport wheel!!!
