I only have experience with the 996, but visually speaking, I prefer its uncluttered design. The 997 multi-button wonder interior with its sharp edges doesn't strike me as particularly appealing. The 996 interior had beautiful curving lines, which the interior in the 997 lacks.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

I prefer the 997 interior (without Sport Chrono that is ). The 996 curvy interior was fashionable at the time, but it did not stand the test of time IMHO. It feels like looking back at "cars of the future" from the 80's today.

That, and the plastics used are like night and day.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

I had a 996TT with full black leather with soft look seats and a 997S with black standard leather. The fit and finish of the 997 is certainly better. Visually, IMO the 996 interior is starting to look a bit dated. I like the harder, edgier feel of the 997 inside--it also functions better and is more comfortable. Full Leather option is the way to go with the 997S (standard in the TT).

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

997 bc it looks like a 911; not a japanese car trying to be a 911:)

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

Would love the fit & finish of the 997 with the simplicity of the 996.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

Imho the difference in seat comfort alone gives 997 the better interior.
On top of that, quality of surface materials and color match +997.

However, I do prefer the look of the 996 steering wheel over the 997.

Same here regarding the steering wheel. The thicker wheel on the 996 is so much nicer than the wheel on my 997. But the rest of the 997's interior is far above my 996's. The rising dough shapes in the 996 and the snap together look of the dash pieces don't match the 997's,,,, even in the later 2002-2004 MY's when material quality improved.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

No comparison for me. The 997 is light years better than the 996 in terms of quality and appearance. Practicality? I think I'll decide on that after I've used it for a while.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

I like them both, but the 996 interior had to be leather to be considered nice.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

By far and away, the 997 full leather interior I have is much better than any of the full leather interior 996's I had (including one which was natural brown leather).

The one dis-like with the 997 is the dash (on light colored interiors like beige) reflects in the windshield too much. That was never an issue with the 996 interior.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

I still like the look of the 996 over the 997. The lines just 'work' for me in the 996 (mine is '04).

The WORST feature of the 997 interior is, HANDS DOWN, the FRIGGIN FUGLY STEERING WHEEL!

Did they get a blue-light special at the Mini store for that crap?

My hopes are that they remedy this ugly wheel in years to come, and perhaps there will be some decent aftermarket choices there too. I'm also thinking that as time passes, most of us will migrate to newer models, and therefore become more 'accepting' of the new look. But the chaos of the front center console could use some re-thinking.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

No question...I like the 996 interior better.

The 996 interior flows better...greater continuity in the overall design...versus the 997's angular/straight line arrangement that looks like a bunch of individual parts hanging out together.

The 997 steering wheel is just WAY off the mark...very GT'ish/sedan looking.

I also feel like everything is "higher" in my sight line sitting in the 997, not as bad as the Vette's, but still a higher look/feel than the 996.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

I'm not quite used to the 997 yet - I think the 996 had a bit more a thesis, than the 997, which just seems "different" to me. I do like the better finish and materials of the 997 interior, but I still like the 996 shapes.

One thing better in the 997 though, is the stick - it just feels "right."

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

Have a blk/blk 996TTS Coupe w/virtually every poss leather option and have similarly equipped blk/blk 997TT in Jul prod...IMO, 997TT interior easily will win over 996TTS....best auto interior anywhere, w/only rival being '07 S65's

Prefer 997TT's more extensive leather finishes/stitching on doors/dash/console, w/a more refined feel/look than the plastic-like leather feel/look of the 996TTS interior....

Also prefer 997TT adap sport seats vs 996TTS' sport seats....and value more advanced head/side airbag systems of 997TT....

I believe 997TT's steering wheel is slightly smaller diam than 996TTS'...

Prefer dig speedo readout in center tach face of 997TT, as opposed to off-ctr loc on 996TTS...

Don't listen to stereo/use nav/phone while driving; and HVAC is always set at 68deg, so tiny, hard-to-use PCM buttons don't bother me....I'll just press the easy-to-find "Sport" button upon starting 997TT each time (except in rain)...

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

996 in full leather easy. The 997 interior belongs in a MB, just no styling and a billion buttons. Look at just the door panels for example. The 997 is just flat and featureless, while the 996 panel has nice curves that show actual thought.

Yes, and then there's the Cayenne inspired 997 steering wheel

The 997 seats are better....but thats about it

Definetely the 997 interior. Why? Simple: the 996 interior looks cheap. I owned one of the first 996 Carrera 2 without full leather, I can tell you that this was the worst "interior experience" in my life. Porsche improved the interior quality (not look though) a lot over the 996 build years but the bad taste on my tongue never got away completely. I definetely prefer the 997 interior but I wish they would have used less silver stuff and a little bit more "style", maybe even some sort of retro-look. Still...the 997 interior is a huge improvement over the 996 interior in my opinion.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

no comperison for me,997 by far! like rc said 996 interior looked soooooo cheap

    What he said.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

996 might have looked cheap, but I love the style of the doors a lot more than the easy straight 997 doors. The curved door handle was soo much better!

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

The 997 interior look so much better because the fit/finish and design look modern -- The 996 is ok but feels outdated IMO.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

The interior of my ex 996 turbo.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

    And my 997

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

Add the carbom fiber to the Turbo and you get a really nice interior.

For me it wasn't so much the way it looks, even though the rising cake shapes aren't my favorite and the dash pieces (created by ex japanese auto designers) were too snap together looking. The problem is the way it felt to the touch and operated. Everything in the 997 feels more solid and buttery.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

996 flows more like water and really smooth, 997 is more futuristic and less organic. Both are beautiful.

Re: Which interior do you prefer?

The wood packages were nicer on the 996, also the wood steering wheel and handbrake.

    In a word.
Stradale- your ex Turbo interior was black or natural grey?
Looks like new in the pic, I'm sure you took great care of it..... I saw an '02 996TT trade-in at the dealer today which was a mess-- interior leather very dry, pockmarked & scuffed.

It was black. The color in the pic is off.
    Thanks!
When I took the pic I had the car about 2 yrs and those were my trashy mats, it looked nicer with the mats I had made.

I prefer the 997 interior because I think it is more consistent with the last 40 some years of 911 interiors than the 996. It's dash and vents are just a modern version of the same interior present from the beginning ie 1963. The 996 was a styling departure from the previous interiors and radical styling changes were not well received by most of the purests. Not that the 996 wasn't beautiful. So back to the oval headlights and retro the interior...and hopefully calm the crowd that exclaimed..."where did our beloved aircooled porsches go???" ...or atleast thats what I felt until the 997 came along ......roundish lights and retro interior and all the performance of the 996...the general superiority of the 996 over the aircooled is not hard to defend. It's almost like the old saying "come on in the waters fine" , thanks to the 997 I think I am over all of that now...in three weeks my car should be dock side...she's getting closer and I think they got the interior just perfect.
