OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

I'm posting this in hopes that someone from PAG reads this. All I can say is: you guys at Porsche must have been celebrating Octoberfest a little early when you came up with the flat tire repair-in-a-can idea.

My 987S had a flat tire today, so I followed the direction and poured that white goop into my tire and pumped it up. Unfortunately, something had punctured the tire tread but neglected to remain in it. So as I drove away, I was leaving little spots of white goop behind on the street as the pressure forced the stuff out though the little hole. I stopped 2 or 3 times to refill the tire with air and finally limped into a gas station. There they plugged the tire with someting that looked like chewing tobacco and away I went.

So, I guess Porsche would say - see our solution worked - you got to a service station. And I say get real. I pity anyone who is driving anywhere where there isn't a service station within a 1/4 mile.

Here's the problem - this goop stuff only works if you have a leak and the penetrating item remains in the tire. If you have a small hole as I did, it just doesn't hold. I would be concerned driving a 9x7 in the wide open States with just that can of goop to rely on.

C'mon, at least give us back the donut tire.

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

There are some countries that require a spare tire. And there is a Porsche option code for it. Maybe some one here knows it. Be prepared for sticker shock and dont forget the jack and lug nut wrench and make sure the wrench actually fits.

Also, make sure you have the socket-key that works the security wheel nuts.

Don't ask me how I know

    How do you know?

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

In three years of commuting, I've had two flats, damn glad I had a spare everytime!

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

Come on you guys,--by this time you have to have learned to own a radial tire repair kit! You should have one in each of your cars. It's not rocket science.

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

So where does one put the flat tire even if spare available? Does it fit in trunk? Or if it manages to fit in rear of car, does one want a large, heavy potential internally-launched missle in any accident?

What is risk of being hit by a careless driver while one is self-changing tire?

Drive about 20K mi/yr; never had flat/disabling event; but, if did, would simply call roadside assist; stand far away in as safe a location as poss vs car and traffic while waiting; and have car flat-bedded to P dealer....but I don't feel need for carrying spare engine/fuel lines, etc etc either, as view new P's as fairly reliable vs any competitive cars....

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

You know, I never thought about it before because I always had a spare tire. But I will go buy one - thanks for the advice

Where to put the replaced tyre? I'd toss it away. A high performance car has no business riding on a previously damaged tyre.

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

I've had two flats in my 99 Boxster, both rear tires. The donut tire in the front trunk was fun to install, and the flat real tire barely fits in the trunk. Unfortunately, the repaired real tire doesn't fit in the trunk - it won't close - and you'll rip the lid off if you try and drive home (trust me on this).

And make sure you don't misplace the secret key for the lug locks ...

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

The white goop is a joke. But I'm glad that theres plenty of infrastructure in most of the places I frequent.

    Totally agree

I suspect latest "compact spares" can't fit around the latest PCCB's (sort of like the CTTS issue w/inability to fit smaller winter wheels/tires around the high-perf brakes).....

IMO, would rather lose the added wt of the absurd spare tire ....don't drive in Podunk (which I doubt is a real-world use for 90%+ of 997TT's sold in US), and risk of flat is fairly immaterial anyway.....

Know guys who sampled the boring Lexus and who were left on side of road (and risked a major collision) when their fuel line inexplicably failed....and suffered inept dealer/Lexus response to the life-threatening incident (these experimentalists are now firmly back in the MB fold) ....and know guys who've gotten one/two new 55/65 every yr and cars seem bullet-proof, despite much publicity re: MB's alleged quality woes ....need to examine mfrs' obviously secret warranty claims data to definitively know which cars are actually more likely to leave one stranded on road/in a poss collision situation b/c of critical systems failure.....personally, based on anecdotal data (since no one has any useful hard data), I'd trust reliability/roadside svc of 997TT/65 over any other cars on planet...

    Alan,

This is what will eventually become standard, it's just a matter of time.

the only concern is the reduction of rim space for brakes...

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

At least Porsche has real road side assistance....not like this Fiat version.

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

Hilarious, where was this picture taken?

    I don't know...found it on the web.

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

With a little PhotoShop work it COULD be Porsche Roadside assistance....

    lol

Re: OT- I experienced flat tire repair according to Porsche

seriously... Has anyone had any experience with a product called " ride on " it's a sealant that apparently installed thru the valve stems presumabaly prior to a flat tire event. the claim is that after driving a couple of miles the stuff is uniformily distributed within the tire, to avoid inbalance at speed... sounds ideal but what about warp speed ?
