    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

    Coupla questions:

    1. The mags talk of much improved road compliance over the old GT3s. Any thoughts there?

    2. 911 and Porsche World magazine complained about understeer too. In the article, the porsche reps pointed at the camber adjustability and sway bar adjustability, and Sir Walter simply drove the car around the issue. Do you think it's simply set up this way out of safety, and easily dialed out?

The understeer thing is strange, since my 996 GT3 didn't understeer much from the factory, and Excellence claimed that the 997 GT3 was balanced.

    3. CGT seats. . . comfy? how hard to get in and out?

    Thanks!

    1. road compliance? Difficult to say. The new 997 GT3 is definetely easier to drive fast than the old one but Walter Röhrl also pointed out that it requires a skilled driver at the limit with TC turned off.

    2. I have to admit that I somehow provoked the understeer with my driving style. I just wanted to see if the car is fool-proof (yeah... ). The asphalt temperature also wasn't perfect, too cold for the Cup tires. A lot of "steering" can be done with the throttle foot, a good thing. But today it definetely wasn't the perfect day for driving a GT3. And since we used only a limited airport field at the Munich international airport for testing, we were even more "limited" in our possibilities. Sorry.

    3. the CGT seats are very comfy and they seem to be a tick better (sidegrip, shape) than the "old" GT3 shells.

TANX VERY MUCH for the "REVIEW" RC.

The GT3 was maybe understeering because the front tire never got a chance to warm up

No, the tires were warm enough. I think the tyre pressure was to high.

Also, don't forget that the GT3 comes with adjustable swaybars, so under/oversteer can be adjusted in at least 20 different positions...

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

Congratulations was fantastic day RC, THE 997GT3 DAY and cool videos!!!

I actually touched them and they didn't feel too warm.
A Cup tire needs 70-80*C or so to be sticky enough, the tires had 50-60* C at max (of course just an estimate).
Unfortunately they cool down pretty fast, it is enough if the car doesn't move for a few seconds or so.

This is actually the reason why Cup tires aren't good for street driving, it takes too long until they get to build up enough temperature. As far as I heard, the Michelin Cup tires used for the GT3, the Turbo and now even for the "regular" 997 models are NOT 100% identical with the regular Michelin Cup without Porsche N-designation.
Meaning: they aren't real Cup tires but some sort of enhanced sport tires with the best for both worlds, street and track driving. They may not be as fast as real semi-slicks but they're much faster on the track than the "regular" street tires like the Michelin Pilot Sport.

But unfortunately these "Cup" tires also need temperature to build up a good grip, not as much temperature as a "real" semi-slick but still more than is usual for street tires.

    Sounds complicated, eh?

    Superb pics and vids too!

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

Who's the driver in the second Vid?
Did WR by any chance talk about his preferences between the Turbo and the GT3 in terms of driving fun?

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

    Love the video!

Both cars were equipped with the optional PCCB brake, what can I say...NO fading, very precise brake feel, definetely a MUST HAVE option. Ordering a 997 GT3 without PCCB is like getting strawberry icecream without whipped cream. And did I mention that it also looks great? 380 mm discs front...impressive. The PCCB brake system of the new 997 GT3/Turbo is actually derived from the Carrera GT, the front brake is practically identical.

RC you would recommend the PCCBs even if one plans to do a lot of track work?

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

Did you drive the car yourself too, or only with WR on the wheel?

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

    Thanks for the review RC!!

Tomorrow we have a similar event here in Belgium Flying & Passion days. But I heard there might be a problem because Porsche is behind schedule with the GT3 production, so there might be a chance the GT3 won't make it to the event.

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video

thanks RC, great review! look forward to hear the comparison to the turbo.
had a little drive with a carrera S this weekend, nice car with an astonishing pull from the low revs as well, but i must say, once a turbo, always a turbo. the rush you get when turbo kicks in is just like no other...

    cheers

Maybe not a production problem, but some press-cars have been crashed already - I've heard that a white one meant to join yesterday's event in Munich didn't make it due to a crash also

@ RC: thanx for the nice pics and report
Testing the new GT3 definitely is the best way to overcome the torturing wait time for your TT

    Re: Rennteam 997 GT3 Driving - Pictures & Video
