And, non-metallic black reflects laser speed-gun infrared light 10 dB more poorly than metallic black.

I always recommend gloss, non-metallic black as the ultimate stealth color for eluding laser-gun targeting.

So mike....why did you choose yellow for your CGT?

    Dan,

Actually, it generally makes the reflection WORSE, not better.

Imagine photographing a polished chrome-plated sphere using a single-flash camera in a totally black room. You will end up with a photo of a tiny point of reflection, while all other light is deflected away to other directions and lost (absorbed) in the "blackness" of the room.

Now, repeat with a sand-blasted, but otherwise identical sphere, giving a satin/matte appearance. You'll get a picture of the whole sphere because of the millions of small scattering points distributed across the surface of the sphere, each of which can reflect a small portion of the flash back to the camera.

    See?

Gloss black is way better than dirty black, metallic black, or "flat" black.

    1) I like Signal yellow. It's my favorite sporting Porsche color.

    2) I thought that a fellow in my business should own a car that would prompt customers to say, "Oh. Now I see why he's in that business!"

Have most often gotten new blk/blk P/MB/F; have never personally washed a car; have always found competent detailers/hand car wash guys who seem to do fine job, w/no swirls, etc before I trade-in car after 6-12 mos of typically daily use....

Would presume opportunity cost for any driver of $150K+ commuter cars makes personal washing of cars a costly "hobby" of choice ....and given my freshly-washed cars end up w/various dead bugs/road stuff on windshield/front end after one exuberant high-speed, early wkend AM fwy/twisties run, would argue life's too short to make any rapidly obsolescent car a "show" car....enjoy them and get new, latest-tech replacements frequently... .

Re: My dealer said manual is the only way to go

There is still a black/black manual launch car available for MSRP in Dallas. So go for it.

Re: My dealer said manual is the only way to go

When it's clean , it looks amazing!

Need to factor in particle size and wavelength of light

Your example of a matte finish being illuminated by a flash of visible light is correct. But, since the wavelength of visible light is shorter than that of the near infrared used in laser radar, maybe it's possible to use a matte finish which contains highly uniform particles that are around 1 micron in size. Then, since the wavelength of NIR radiation and the particle size would be about the same, you would get enhanced scattering and only a small component of radiation would return in any given direction. Kind of like the difference between Rayleigh and Mie scattering. This might greatly reduce the ability of the detector to sense the returning radiation.

Re: Need to factor in particle size and wavelength of light

As alan was saying, the angle of a dangle is a rectangle.

Re: Need to factor in particle size and wavelength of light

I went with Basalt Black, it looks great when cleaned and much easier to work with than non-metallic black.

Black definintely has a clear coat. They all do. Believe it or not my mom's black CLK500 is in the shop because little pieces of the clear coat started to chip off from the side of the car. About the size of a dime. You can clearly see the black paint underneath, it's flat. It's the clear coat that makes it shine. So Mercedes painted a portion of the car and when they went to remove the tape more of the clear coat came with it. So they're trying to figure out what to do now. My mom doesn't want the car back, she's like fix it and get rid of it, Mercedes are crap. I don't blaim her.

But yeah, black is a labor of love. I've had so many black cars that I'm over black. ps: Regarding laser and black , my only speeding ticket in the last 10 years was in a black 2002 M5 by laser.

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

i bet it attracts more attention then knight riders trans am! my friend has a gloss black gti so that will please him..

    Reflector.

About the same as white (as far as infrared goes).

is that a good or bad thing

why is it that red fades and seems to oxidise rather quick, no matter how much wax you chuck on...

i'm currently waiting for my v1 which i brought unused from a woman in germany, question is does it affect it if i crank the engine over with it switched on?

reason is i'm forever making stops here and there and i'd hate to ''fry'' something, there are alot of ''service required'' appearing on escorts when owners do this.. so it must have some sort of effect......

    thanks mike

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

Here is a picture of my Carrera S. It does not gt any better than this. A bitch to keep clean but you cant walk away from it without turning around and taking a last look. Love Black.

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

    Beautiful!

    So what's your secret formula

for keeping your car looking like this - it's amazing!

Re: So what's your secret formula

Black color after a "make over" does look real good. However, like many said it, it's a pain in the a.ss to maintain it espcially if you're "anal" with your car like me!
By the way 997carreraS your car look real good!

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

    Rich,
    VERY,,,,,,,,,,,,,,VERY, NICE.
Could you post more pics of your car/wheels. I was very close to buying those TechArts for my 997 S Cab but decided to wait knowing I was going to get the turbo cab and wasn't sure whether I would be able to go larger in wheel size etc. I'm going to order it w/ PCCB's so it will look similair to your set-up, if I decide to do the wheels. tia !

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

While you're at it, could you please also post pics of the rear wing? From this angle, it looks a bit like the 996 GT2 wing, but in a decent humble way... very beautiful!

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

very nice, i know what you mean my mate has had only black cars and are hard to keep clean, yet my white gti still looked clean after a week of driving!

problem is black shows up every fine chip and scratch

Here is the rear with the Techart Type III wing. I know you guys have seen it before. Basically you remove the center part of the rear lid including the servo mechanism that raises and lowers it and bolt this unit in as a replacement. He had to do something to the wiring so the computer did not throw a fault. It looks good and isn't to over the top.

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

Here is another view. This is before I did the wheels and H&R Springs

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

Here is the last picture this is a side view with the H&R's and Techart 19 Forumlas. Just so You guys know, I sold this about two weeks ago. I am drving a rental car . My Turbo is "CMPPRD Vehicle Completed Production" but not on the boat as of Tuesday.

Re: Opinions on Standard Black Paint

I always thought the techart stuff better then everyone elses' out there. The boat already left with the launch cars from germany, so hopefully you'll be on the next one. I can't wait to see what Techart comes up with for the new turbo. Especially with the new leds' up front. Should be pretty schnazzy. Gorgeous car you got there.

The Techart stuff is good quality. A lot of these guys do fiberglass. The last thing I want to do is put fiberglass on my new carrera. I most likely will put formula's on my Turbo. And I know i just showed you a bunch of great pictures of my black "s" but my turbo will be Atlas.
