    tire noise and pilotsports

    I searched the archives and only see people complaining about tire noise and pirelli's. I'm getting some noise with my pilotsports that I don't remember having last summer. All my other porsches and my current snow tires always had conti's which have been very quiet. Is this normal? Thanks.

    Just got my first Porsche, a 911S, in February, and it came with the Continentals. They sound a bit noisy to me, but then the Michelins I've had on more conventional cars have always sounded even more noisy.

    I have not seen any tests measuring the decibel levels inside the car with different tires at comparable speeds. That would be interesting.

    How many miles, RNO? My PS2s are _silent_ at 1,800 miles - but they're only expected to last for 10K, so... maybe they're wearing out?

    Funny, these tires are wearing noticeably at 1,800. I have scuffing on the outside edges, and the main tread area is clearly "sanded down". They have a 220 treadwear rating (US), which means that, under controlled testing conditions, they should be down to the wear-bars at 22,000 miles. I'm seeing posts on several boards that indicate that 10-11k miles are max for the PS2s.

    The Eagle F1 GS-D3s on my Bimmer have a 280 rating, and at 12k miles look like new.

    Maybe Porsche drivers are hard on their tires? <big grin>

    I have about 10k miles but half of them are on my winter tires.

    Oh and two of them were replaced one in the front at around 1k miles and another in the back end of last summer.

    I've heard good things about the Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires (incl. C&D comparison). Does anyone have any practical 997 experience with these Goodyears?

    Don't know what you guys do with your tyres.

    I've got 14,000 miles on my PS2's with very little wear.

    Maybe it's something to do with road surfaces and/or climate.

    After getting a puncture in one of the rear PS2's, I swapped out the whole set for a set of Conti's. The noise difference is noticeable in my opinion, but I think that's to be expected of a tire that's rated 220 vs. the Contis 280...and I'm sure there are other technical characteristics as well that probably add to the noise.

    The remaining tires only had 5000 miles on them when I took them off...still holding onto 1 rear at the moment...may eventually get another rear and venture onto the track with it instead of the Contis.

    AS you say John H...may have something to do with road surfaces, and/or driving style ( he he).

    Well I haven't been 'hanging around' so far - but may have to now, having just received my first speeding ticket for 20 years (110MPH - VASCAR)

    Maybe my tyre-wear will improve even more!

    After 5000 miles my P-Zero's were useless, sliding about all over the place. I drive the car spiritedly but I've never spun the wheels or even broken grip, never use sport mode.

    I've got a set of Pilot Sports now and they seem very good. The only thing I don't like is the look. The P-Zero's were very low profile and hard cut looking, the Pilots look like they've come off of a tractor! Ok, slight exageration but you know what I mean.

    I am on my original PS2 with about 2400 miles on them. They are definitely worn down a bit. There has always been a good deal of road noise on the highway but it's within reason.
    As a side note: I use 18" winter contis in the off-season and they are definitely louder on the highway !!!!

    well I'm interested in the Yoko Advan Sports. They are suppose to be standard on the C4. Anyone can comment on them?

    I have 25000 miles on my noisy ps2. The fronts are still plenty groovy, I've replaced the rears 4 times due to nails
    and screws so they are really groovy.
    The last two sets of Michelins on my Dodge pickup....no flats and 80,000 mi. each.
