Renualt F1 Car Lapping Top Gear Test Track - Cockpit camera

You have probably seen the clip from Top Gear where the Stig drives around the Top Gear test track in 59s.

Here's the entire lap from the inboard camera, the acceleration is mindblowing

Did anyone else notice that he took off from the starting line at 1:33 into the video and didn't cross the line until 2:41? That means he did the lap time in 1:08, not 59 seconds.

the sheer track speed of an F1 car is unfathomable.

Even experienced race car drivers often cannot endure the force the car puts on the driver. Pulling 4-5g's on a turn...insane

That's what motorsports is all about

youre right...but it might be the way they edited it.
They probably spent extra time on different angles for drama..

It's sick how it's glued to the track...amazing!

Check the board in the TV clip... around 1:18 to 1.30.
But the whole premise for the time table is so lame - so I wouldnt take it for more than good entertainment.

Did you look at the timing on the cockpit camera video that I posted at the top, and that Eggplant posted again above this reply?

The clock in the cockpit camera video stops at 59s dead.
What's interesting though is that Wikipedia claims that the Stig in this test was actually Renault test driver Heiki Kovalainen...

The Stig Perry McCarthy retired in 2003 hoping to return in 2004 with Audi. It never happened. So depending when this video was done, it is very unlikely it was Perry.

One of Perry's problems was his continuing lack of money. He was always running just ahead of the debt collectors. Thus, it is possible he returned to television for income.

BTW, the show originally wanted to call the driver, THE GIMP. But Perry refused and said it was a deal breaker. After many proposed names, they arrive on THE STIG. It was Perry's idea to use a Darth Vader type helmet.

I'm sure it was a Renault driver.Renault would never give a multi million euro car to someone they don't know and that probably never drove a F1 car before.
