    AutoSpies.....good grief....

From a post I made a few days back....comes the experts:

    Dear 001,

My Porsche sources say the 997(2005-2007) update will only apply to the non-turbo models. The Turbos will remain on the 996 platform.

Then after a couple years they will come out on the 998 platform (2007-2008). The lights on the 998 will be almost identical to the Carrera GT lights, while the 997 will have retro look lights. Engine wise, the 997 will have a few more horses, but the 998 will have Cayenne derived v8 engines tunes to 400hp stock and 500hp in turbo form. The interior on the 997 is derived from the cayenne and will continue unchanged on the 998.

The double clutch gearbox will be available on the 997 and 998. 19 inch wheels will be available on 997 with 18 inch as standard. Also the 997/998 are going to have more standard features than present.

Prices are expected to be almost the same. However the 998 v8 will be significantly more. Also the "big heads" at Porsche have not yet decided whether to only have the flat 6 on the Boxster and have the Carrera only run the V8, or have the Carrera running the V8 and flat 6 stretched to clost to 4.0L.

Thats what I know for sure, more to come...

    997 Update!

Seems like this is the suspected timing:

    2004 late: C2 and C2S Coupe

    2005: C2S Cab and C4S Coupe

    2006: C4S Cab (400hp), GT3 and Turbo

    2007: GT2

    2008: 998

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

AutoSpies = B.S. Always been, always will.

So, are the Turbos waiting for the 998 or not?

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

They should be banned from having a site on the internet

They are THE worst site IMO

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

Greetings to you and everyone in RennTeam.

I was talking to an informed person at a Porsche Dealer (name and dealership withheld) this last evening and I was told the hot item for increasing power for the up coming 997 is the Audi "Direct Injection" system which I understand is able to increase HP by 10%. I'm gussing here, but I think this system will be incorporated into the 997's C2S engine to give the 997's standard 340hp a nice boost to 374hp!

Does anyone know about the Audi system and the possibility of it used in the 997?

If somebody uses these words, it can't be true. The specs for the 998 are already on the planning table but there is nothing "sure" and the V8 engines are just a possibility, not a fact.
I remember when a guy who works at Porsche directly told me that the updated Boxster gets xxx HP a while ago. Surprisingly, it got 8 HP more than this guy told me. And he worked in the production by that time.

Dealers usually get the same information as customers, we have dealers who get their info on updated models on Rennteam.com and other internet sites. This is no joke!
Of course Porsche doesn't want to unveil too much, not even to dealers because otherwise sales would drop substantially, especially shortly before a model change.
I know that Porsche invites "selected" owners of dealerships worldwide to throw a look at their new and upcoming models. This usually doesn't happen sooner than 6-12 months or so before planned introduction. But Porsche does not tell dealers, even the "selected" ones, details about future models. They get a hint or two but not more.

So if someone says "I know for sure...", this is usually BS.
But we've seen that before on the internet.

Regarding the upcoming 997 Turbo: there have been suggestions to make the TOP2 look much more different than the normally aspirated 997. Based on the success of the new 997 design (which isn't really "retro", the front lights are oval shaped...), the 997 Turbo gets a similar or a more different design. It doesn't make much sense to speculate now about future models.
The interior of the 997 doesn't look like the interior of the Cayenne. It may look "similar" because Porsche went back to a more simple design but it definetely doesn't look the same. It is funny, when I first saw it, the interior of the 997 reminded me of the Audi TT (no kidding!). Of course it doesn't really look exactly that way but it is nicer than the current design.

The 997 shows up soon, first official pictures should be available around march or april.

Regarding power: Porsche is aware of the competition, this is all I can say now and this is actually all I've been told (but with a grin on the face ). So I truely hope that Porsche understands the competition, the dangers of selling "underpowered" cars and the wishes of future customers. If they can't (or don't want to) raise power, they should lower weight. It is possible but probably more expensive than to raise power.

The next 2-3 years will be very interesting and I'm sure we'll see a surprise or two from Porsche.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

An interior similar to the Audi TT?
That is actually good news as IMHO the Audi TT has one of the best interior ever made. Very good quality, very good finish and nice simple design.
Hey RC, how come you have seen the 997?
I respect the secrecy you have probably sworn to you will notice, I'm not asking for any pics, which I think you were probably forbidden to take anyway.
    Just curious that's all.
Historically, evolution of the 911 has alway been quite smooth, except for 964 to 993.
Can we expect a change that big this time as well?
I don't take in account the 993/996 change as this was a revolution and not an evolution IMO (as in, completely new model).
With the air cooled 911s, the thing that has probably less evolved is the interior. 993 interior is almost identical to that of the 1963 911
The 997 interior will be nicer than the 996 I don't doubt that, but will the 996 interior look outdated?
    Thanks.

    Amen!

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

Remember RC (although your post quoted me) I did not say I know for sure. YOU are one of a handful of people I trust with this info.

When I posted the translation, I quoted and credited AutoBild, where the article appeared. Just wanted to be clear on that one.

Appreciate all the feedback. Awaiting real news.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

RC, are those spy pics of the 987/997 interior accurate then, the ones showing two high mounted Audi TT- style round air outlets at the top of the center dash ?

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

    Good question.
If yes, great bc it looks quite good and bad bc that spy pics refers to a 987 which means that 997 and 987 would share the same interior again.
Will that be the case RC?

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

    There will never be a V8 in a 911!

    I agree.

IMO there may be a different variant of PORSCHE built CGT V10 but no RS6 modified V8.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

True, Harm Laggay said it himself.
There are two things that define the essence of the 911:
The engine is a flat 6 and it's at the rear of the car.
Any of those two missing and it's not a 911 anymore.
I think the V8 will be reseved for a potential new model maybe but not the 911, definitly not.

Interior is pretty much the same, the Boxster interior is a bit more "flashy" but not much different. I actually like it.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

Did the interior look something like this?...

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

    Christian..you make me dreaming!!

I whant NOW the 997 Turbo!!!!!!!!in clubsport version..

    Ciao

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

Two things I'd like to call your'e attention to, both influenced by the CGT concept: the steering wheel and the gauges. Very, very nice!!! Also notice the Cayenne navigation sys.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

If you told me that was the interior of the new Golf, I'd believe you. Pretty generic " euro " styling from the early 90s , if you ask me , with it's straight horiz/vertical panel fit lines on the dash/center stack and very compartmented areas. I hope it looks richer in production w/o having to add $5000 worth of extended leather and trim like the current 996 .

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

I'd have to agree, it looks nice, but not miles better than the actual interior and worst of all, cheap compared to the Audi TT on which it is clearly based on.
But let's wait for the real thing.
But in temrs of interior, let's admit that in the same price range, the Maserati is a better place to be in.
Notice the bi color treatement (black and grey between upper and lower dash) a feature usually found in Italian cars. Not bad.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

AMGeater, the guages look the same as in current 996/986.

I agree with Fanch that the above interior DOES NOT look miles better than the current one. It only looks different.

I am not a fan of the slant upward dash. Looks cheap, as cheap as the ones that MB is now using.

Well I guess you cold say the same thing about the gauges in the CGT???? They are different, the may not be in the "stacked" style as on the CGT, but they do have the same aluminum look surround, so in that respect(until closer inspection) they are different from the 996/986.

    Re: AutoSpies.....good grief....

    ooops, *could.

Wait until you see it, it really looks better than the current design and yes, it looks somehow like a mix of the current design with Cayenne and Audi TT elements. Some people might not like it but it looks more classy than the current design. The gauges will be completely round (actually slightly oval shaped), not like the "3/4" gauges they use now (with the exception of the middle gauge).
I've never been a friend of the current speedo design on the Boxster and 911 and I really find the Cayenne gauges much nicer (not only because I ordered one... ).
