    How soon to wax?

My 997S reached Checkpoint 8 on 3/30/06. I took delivery of it on 4/21/06. My question is this...How soon can you wax your car without adversely affecting the paint. If this seems like a dumb question, then I'm sorry. But my wifes SUV just had some paint and body work and when I picked it up I was told not to wax it for at least 30 days. Any input from you guys would be most helpful. Thanks.

    Re: How soon to wax?

I had a full detail (mostly wax) 5 days afetr picking her up

    Re: How soon to wax?

Today's Porsches all come with clear coats and are cured as they leave the factory. There is no longer a need to wait for a 'cure' time.

    Press on!

    Re: How soon to wax?

I think my dealer waxed mine before I picked it up.

    welcome to Rennteam GR997S!

    Re: How soon to wax?

I just picked up mine yesterday, and it seemed to have been waxed at the dealership.Plan to apply some Zymol or Meguiare in a month's.

    Re: How soon to wax?

I'm guessing factory paint is a different formula/technology from local bodyshop paint. The factory can get as high tech as they want. Can you imagine warrenty claims for bad paint after a wax job ruins it?

Re: How soon to wax?/clay waxing ??help

    Anyone heard of clay waxing?
Is it really cool like someone was telling me.
I guess the clay takes everything off?
    Is it worth doing

Re: How soon to wax?/clay waxing ??help

The idea behind claying your car is to remove all of the "bad" stuff so when you wax it can bond with your car paint. Well that is what I was told. Hey it sounded good to me. Well I clayed my car and then wax it about 2 months after I had the car. All I can say is WOW what a difference. The brand I used was Zaino. I'm sure their are others that do a great job as well.

Re: How soon to wax?/clay waxing ??help

There are two manufacturers which I would only use. Zymol and Swissol. I use Swissol personally and can honestly say it's superb.

There is a guy on the TT forums who details cars using swissol and he is booked it to do mine next weekend. That will include, clay, cleaner fluid and waxing, along with a teflon wax on the wheels. I'll find a pic of a 997 he did last week and post it for you so you can see the results. Trust me, there is no alternative.

I'm sure Dave won't mind me posting these, but here you go.

Vicki-I think you're talking about claying the car after washing to remove surface contamiments. Suggest you visit Autopia.com for more info on this and other aspects of detailing your car.

Re: How soon to wax?/clay waxing ??help

This was on the sports car forum... the ultimate car wash.
I think he clays the car also.

Re: How soon to wax?/clay waxing ??help

Using a clay bar is a great way to get rid of surface debris such as road tar that normal washing will not remove. It is safe and effective if done properly. If you notice rough spots particularly on the hood or if you are waxing and notice streaking of the wax from surface debris it is time to use a clay bar. I have done it a few times particularly on the hood and bonnet and it works great. Just make sure you use a lubricant like speed shine when applying the clay bar.

I used a bug tar remover the first time I washed my 2006 911S, which was about one month after I took delivery. I pick up lots of bug juice driving in Virginia - we had a mild winter this year. I washed with a Meguiars wash after that, dried it properly, and then applied a coat of Rejex, a polymer coating (not a wax) that lasts for up to six months. Its easy to remove bug juice now, and I don't have to use any bug and tar remover, just the normal soap and a little "elbow grease" on occasion.

One downside with Rejex is that you have to apply it to a wax-free surface and do it out of the sunlight (meaning you've got to have an overcast day or be in a garage) and the temperature has to be under 85 degrees F (about 29.4 Celsius). The other downside is that you must let the stuff cure for 12 hours out of the sunlight.

The stuff is great, gives a wonderful shine, and is also a great protector for the wheels against the brake dust.

    Jim
