    991 Engine Fire On Highway

    From 6speed

My destroyed 2013 C4S nearly killed me for the last time over the 2016 Christmas holiday. The fire started in the engine compartment, only a few miles and a few minutes after the dealer did the 10k mi. service, which included an oil change, new filter and O-ring, and switched over to winter wheel set. This could have killed me and many others on the road. Forensic inspections of the burned out shell of a car revealed "non-native" fibers in the engine area - which, I'm told means they left a rag in there during the 10k service. When the car was brand new, it repeatedly and dangerously stalled on the road because of the defective crank sensor and spacer problem described by me and others in the thread "My C4S Died During Morning Commute." After this fire, I asked for a new car, since, after too many near-death experiences caused by Porsche or the dealer, I just didn't think it was too much to ask. The dealer's insurance company only wants to pay their idea of the market value of the car, less a 4k "salvage" value for car that's now worth only a few hundred dollars if melted down. The dealer won't step in to make up the difference.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

That's a terrible experience..... But I suppose the dealer's insurance is technically correct; I know here unless you've taken what we call GAP (return to invoice) additional cover if you or someone else writes off your car you only get trade value. Smiley I don't know the law, but have you consulted a lawyer over the matter?

May well be worth taking up with Porsche NA as the dealer admitted liability to see if between dealer and importer there is any goodwill offer...Smiley

Good luck, anyway and hope you can find a good replacement - not from the same dealer I suspect! Smiley

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Um, shouldn't the owner's insurance be the one picking up the tab and then suing the dealer's insurance? What is car insurance for otherwise?

Also, hard to argue you'd be entitled to a new car. It's a 2013 991. It's worth what it's worth. To ask for a 2017 991.2 is pretty far fetched.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

I am certainly not seeing 4K in salvage value for the burnt remains.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Yeah, I'd definitely fight over that $4K in claimed salvage value. That car is scrap metal at most.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

How the hell is insurance only covering the value POST incident?! Can you pay your premium on that too? WTF is that yes It should just be the value of the year/model with similar mileage. He should also be able to sue his dealer quite easily for an equal replacement car because they left a rag in the engine bay which caused the fire!

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Where does it say they're paying POST incident? As far as I can tell, they giving him market value minus the salvage value I guess.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

what salvage value though angry Crazy these insurance companies are pure evil... thank god I do not work in this sector.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

    Glad you're ok.

    Sorry about your car issue.

Most attorneys will let you have an initial phone call for assessment of whether the case should be pursued. I'd consider that if you can't get a reasonable response from your dealer.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

I don't think OP is the owner. I think he just copied it from the other fourm.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Don't see how he can get a new car out of it. One may consider the insurance companies evil but if it was customary to provide a new car in this case all our insurance would be unaffordable for Porsches or most other expensive cars.

I do get that the service at some Porsche dealers is horrible.  It is at mine. My private mechanic would have never made such a mistake.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

The car is old and used, unless he has the 3 year special coverage that you get with companies like AllState, no way he should get a new one...

Anyhow, his insurance picks up the tab and they sue the dealer who is insured for that, period. In the end he will loose as much as he would if he totaled the car.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Similar stuff happened when thrown away cigarette stubs caused a fire in the engine compartment as far as I heard.

The fact that it was the dealer's fault should be an incentive for the dealer (and Porsche!) to make amends and to give this poor man a new car (if he actually wants to stick with Porsche).

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

No way he should get a new car is it was an accidental fire, BUT the fire was caused by negligence from the mechanics which left a rag in the engine compartment, and caused no ordinary failure but rather a fire that put the owner and occupants at great risk, so IMO that should deserve some serious compensation from the dealer, whether its a new car or what ever they agree to.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

The owner was already displeased with the vehicle as he stated. Now he has filed a claim directly with the dealerships insurance instead of filing the claim through his own insurance. The initial offer from the insurance company reflects the above average probability of fraud. The more eager the owner is to take the offer, then the more likely a further investigation will be conducted.  These "evil" insurance companies deal with a lot of "evil" fake claims. It is an ongoing challenge for them to tell the difference.

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

He could have had a brand new car back when his car was having the initial problems by lemoning it...................

Re: 991 Engine Fire On Highway

Fraud represents 70% of the insurance premiums in the USA in case you didn't know... That said I dont think it is fraud, it would be easy to identify the type of rag and see if the dealer uses that kind.

Damages should be on the table only if the car occupants lives were put in danger, which is not very clear.

    SciFrog:

Fraud represents 70% of the insurance premiums in the USA in case you didn't know...

If that's true I need to either switch to a insurer that scrutinizes its policyholders more thoroughly or start submitting some fraudulent claims. I'm not interested in subsidizing fraud from others as a legitimate client.
