    Who needs a Prius?

I went driving late Friday night and since there were many CHP officers on the road, I decided to use the cruise control for the first time to regulate my speed. So I put the car in 6th gear and set the cruise control to 67 mph (speed limit here is 65 mph). Too my amazement, I was getting a constant 30.8 mpg! I have never ever gotten better than 19 mpg on the car before. So at this mpg rate, who needs a Prius? Last night, I was getting better gas mileage than my daily Audi A3.

And the cruise control served it purpose, I was passed by two CHP patrol cars.

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

I recently drove my car for a 1000KM round trip. I found out that at a constant 120KM/H the fuel consumption is good, but if you increase you speed to +160KM/H then the car becomes a black-hole sucking up fuel at an incredible rate.

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

I've been beating the cr*p outta my car and, seemingly, I have been getting 20 mpg (by measuring at the pump, didn't check what the OBC sez). Could THAT be true? if so it's rather impressive.

    A gas sipper

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

I'm getting 20 to 22 mpg with a Cab and Tip and on twisty 2 lane mountain roads so I'm pretty pleased. Did anyone see the "South Park" episode where they called them not Prius but PIOUS?

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

    I am impressed!

The 360/430's do not have cruise control ( I am not sure about the V12's). Do you think Ferrari is sending a message by not providing cruise control?

Yes. "It doesn't matter whether it has it or not. It will still suck up gas faster than a fat guy sucking up hamburgers at Burger king".

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

Rarely see better than 20 and never more than 22 to the gallon. Imperial gallon....

    Must be doing something wrong

Yes. They're saying they don't expect anyone to drive far enough to need cruise control.

My contact in Toyoda-shi tells me they are going to rename the face-lift version "Holier than thou".

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

I think Ferrari is taking a purist stance. Does a true sports car need cruise control? Ferrari says no and I think traditionally Porsche has said the same thing. Today the cars are more concerned about creature comforts Reality suggests that Porsches have become a sports car to drive and thus a cruise control is a real world featurs. Many years ago 911 rarely had power seats as pure sports car did not need them. Even today, they do not come standard with power seats, but how many people order 997 for $80-110+ without power seats. More too the point, the 997 engine is very well engineered to perform and yet still get great mpg. Even more interesting is the new Z06 Corevette. Is has HUGE HP and very good MPG and no gas guzzler tax. Does Ferrari offer an option of cruise control on any car? How about cup holders? PS thank you Nberry for being impressed!

    Good points.

I do not believe any Ferrari has cruise control. They cater to a very select purist group. The car is not meant to do grocery shopping (although I have and do), drive to work (I will nor do) or for family outings.

It is designed to be a blissful sanctuary and fits the bill beautifully. In no way is the Ferrari an all around car like a Porsche.

That episode was hilarious. Smug Alert!

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

A friend has a 575M and Im sure it has cruise control - will check.

    Re: Who needs a Prius?

The Corvette engine is perhaps more efficient that its displacement would suggest. Not only is it relatively economic on fuel, but also on space and weight. It may be lighter than the 997 Turbo engine, when all the piping and intercoolers are taken into account. Power per liter of displacement thus becomes irrelevant.

It will be interesting to see how the upcoming 2008 Lotus Esprit fits into the "purist" stance.
