    Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

    Hi,

Anyone else got Sport Design wheels fitted? If so, how do you keep the insides clean - without removing the wheels from the car on each occasion? The spokes and rim aren't difficult - but time consuming; however, I haven't found an easy way of getting behind the spider to clean the inside flat area of the rim. My hand will only just fit through the largest gap in the spokes but no more. Help - please.

    Del

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

    Hi Del:

I applied two coats of Rejex to the outside of my Sport Designs... and it works like magic. I cleaned them yesterday, and 700 miles of city-accumulated brake dust just wiped off with a microfiber mitt and some Meguiar's car soap. It works great.

That being said - the inside of the rim is still nasty. I haven't found a good way to get in there, either. I'm thinking that, at the next full detail, I'll pull the wheels, clean them well and apply Rejex to the insides, too.

Sorry, no easy solution. IMHO, they look great on the car but they're not easy to clean.

A better solution might be changing my brake pads (Akebono ProACT ceramics?) - the stock pads are almost as bad as VW / Saab / Volvo stock pucks. They dust like crazy.

But the brakes work soooooo well - I don't want to disturb that balance.

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Seems you're in the same situation as me; I've put Rejex on the outsides - just reluctant to take off the wheels to do the insides!

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Any one know of sources for those soft inserts for jack cups? I've seen them at the tire shops, but the guys there are unaware of a source. It does seem that the only way to really clean the wheels is to pull them, or maybe bribe a small child to do it for you =)

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

I found a brush at my local p-car dealer that works great on the 10 spoke boxster wheels. it reaches through the spokes and it's long enough to get to the back of the rim. It's made for Audi and cost me less than $5. There is a link below with a picture. hope the link works
    http://forums.audiworld.com/c6a6/msgs/19433.phtml

I've bought many brushes looking for the 'right' one. This is the best; i use it on my 997 too.contrary to what the link says, it is soft and does not scratch (or i wouldn't use it on my wheels

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

ps... it's the small picture of a brush with the white plastic handle

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

I found a great brush that allows me to clean the "inside/hub" portion of my rim. I bought the brush from http://www.superiorcarcare.net/derewiwhbr.html . I bought the 16" Wire Wheel Brush. Works well for me.

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

I also use DP Gel Wheel Cleaner http://www.superiorcarcare.net/gel-wheel-cleaner.html . I'm sure any good wheel cleaner will work. What I do is water the wheel and spray it with the wheel cleaer. Then use the brush to go between the spokes. Works well.

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

I don't have the same wheels, but I really love a brush from Meguiar's. Some other brushes I have tried scratch the wheels with their metal tip or core. Not so with this one. Look at http://www.meguiars.com/?wheel-tire-brushes/Ultra-Safe-Wheel-Spoke-Brush

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Thank you so much; excellent ideas - and I can source the Meguiars brush easily in the UK.

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Derek, before you go to the expense of the Meguiars one go to your local Asda and buy a 'bottle' brush from the household cleaning section, grey n black in colour (in with the mops n buckets) - all plastic, nice rubbery grip and all for 97p !!

I managed to get a smaller car sponge in between the spoke and puch it round the insides, which is OK but a bit fiddly - Rejexing the insides helps ease the cleaning but its no miracle coat..

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Another useful and more cost-effective solution; I'm off to the shops tomorrow!

    Re: Cleaning Sport Design Wheels

Here's what you do. Buy some of those large foam-like sponges and bring them to your bandsaw. Cut specific shape of sponge to fit between spokes. Make it easier than shoving the whole square sponge in between. I did this for my m3 wheels and it works great. Mount modified sponge on a short length of broom handle with hot glue (cut hole with extremely sharp and LONG razor knife refill).
