    4000 miles, 8 months, car still stinks up garage with rubber

    After a long drive and parking car in my garage, I gotta go back an hour later to open all the doors to let all the accumulated heat and the rubber and sulphur(?) smell out of the garage.

    Do you guys notice this? I *guess* it's not a big problem but you'd think it would fade away after a while huh? Scheesch. Wheeew.

    You might have a leaking cam cover.

    I've got more miles than you, and always get the same smell, and it seems more pronounced the more "spirited" I was driving prior to parking. Especially when I'm driving back from Gainesville (45 minutes north of me, all rural roads), and I finish the trip with a full-blast road-race-pace romp through the banked esses just north of my neighborhood. That's when I REALLY stink up the garage...

    So I've got a working theory.... Most cars have the engine in the front, and by the time the exhaust system winds its way to the back of the car, it's rather "cool" in relative terms. Also, most cars have the exhaust fairly isolated from the rear wheelhouses. In your 997, the mufflers are DIRECTLY BEHIND your rear tires, and hot as Hades due to the proximity to the engine, and inherent design. I'm quite certain that the smell is a cocktail of rubber and road and all the drippings from cars on the road that is sprayed up directly onto the glowing-hot exhaust and burning off. The smell will ALWAYS be there as long as you're running soft performance tires. And the harder you run the car, the hotter the exhaust gets, the hotter the tires get, the more amplified the effect.

    You might email Michelin and see if they can use additives that, when cooked on exhaust emit "boutique" odors that are pleasing to the senses! LOL!!!

    And lastly, avoid dead animals and poop with your 997... Unless you enjoy the smell of rotten racoon on the barby...

    Brakes smell great too mixing with the smell of hot rubber and the crackling and ticking as the exhaust cools down.

    Hot tyres melting the tarmac and stones/tar sticking to the tyres takes a while to wear off

    I just got past 2,000 miles, and I get the smell every time, but I've got a small garage (1-car, next to a walk-out basement). It lasts several hours, and then the new-car smell takes over.

    I took the car up to the dealer, as I had some concerns over oil consumption and a possible oil leak. The good news was that there was no leak. The service rep claimed that Porsche puts a chemical on the underside of the engine to protect it from corrosion, and that the hot engine makes it heat up and turn into a wax-like substance. If anyone else has noticed this, could this be another reason for the odd smell?

    LOL! Funny, that would represent my rural highways' "victory" by aggressively passing old pickups, ditzy women drivers, dumptrucks, and old smoky cars with their original shocks.

    Scared me at first .. learned to like it .. and now I love it... it is the smell of a p. car all the way....

    note: Turbo has a protective firewall btwn the tires and the exhst.. i.e designed to maxi. the airflow from the side vents to the brakes I guess so not much of a smell..
