    MAYONNAISE??

Just topped up my oil at 1800 miles.

There is loads of mayonnaise around the filler neck. Is this bad?

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

I get this too. Think a mix of oil petrol and maybe a bit of water. Shoud be fine.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

Oh good! Thats me happy then!

I checked the coolant and it isn't significantly down. And I can't see a new car having a blown head gasket.

Other odd thing. The oil was flashing at the bottom of the gauge. I put 3/4 litre in and it is now at the very top. The manual says its more like 1.5 litres bottom to top. Odd!

    Thanks

You're not driving it long enough to dry it out. No more short trips for you!

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

It means water has contaminated the oil. Get it checked out pronto because the engine needs clean oil to run properly. And the reason that water is there needs to be established as this could mean more seriuous problems.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

New car. Running in. Short journeys. Don't worry - it's not a problem.
Start worrying if you've done a long, fast, 500 mile trip and you've still got mayonnaise!!!

Definitely, you need to determine if it's "normal" condensation that occurs because the car is not driven often enough and especially not for a long enough duration, or if it's due to an internal leak.

    Correct. Short trips.

    Correct. Short trips.

You need to get your oil temperature over 100 degrees C and keep it there for a while... on a regular basis!

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

    Whats a short trip ?

I never do trips so short that the engine doesn't reach normal operating temperature.

My run to the gym is 20 mins each way. And i go there and back each day. But the car gets fully warmed on that journey.

    Is that considered short?

There's no hard and fast rule, but I think of anything under 30 miles as a short trip

That is definitely short. Let the engine tell you what is a short trip. If you never get it hot enough to clear that sludge off the oil cap then it is not getting hot enough to evaporate off the moisture that collects within the engine when it is shut off. Once you DO heat it up that stuff will go away. But,--you need to really exercise it periodically,--that will really hurt an engine over the long haul,--all that moisture will pit the walls within the engine.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

Just found this on Renntech - they seem to think it's normal. Interesting - I'll call by my OPC this weekend to check (I have a lot of mayo in my engine - and I hate the stuff!).

I made similar experiences, see here Link to 'Low accuracy of oil level measurement' thread
My advice is to wait until the oil level has dropped to the last bar above the underfilled bar. Wait until several measurements before the next drives confirm that level. Then just fill 0.4l in.
Since my oil change after 3000km break in I just lost one bar of the oil level display in the next 3000km. So, I have not reached the point to follow my own advice yet

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

All this talk about mayonnaise is making me feel hungry!

Planning to have good old fashioned fish and chips this Friday lunchtime - delicious!

I remember a story about people that would wrap some meat & potatoes in aluminium foil and place it in the engine compartment on their car engine before they went for a long drive. At the end of the journey, open the hood and hey presto, nicely cooked steak!

It's the weirdest car-related phenomenon I have ever heard about and honestly, it's absolutely true!

In fact, here is the cookery book:

Maynard, Chris & Scheller, Bill, Manifold Destiny: The One! The Only! Guide to Cooking on Your Car Engine! (Villard Books, 1998).

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

Just go take the car for a long high-speed drive. Get the oil hot and foaming. All this should drive off the water (which is a natural byproduct of combustion). Park it and check cap the next day.

Short trip is defined maybe as one where not all the water created by burning gas has been driven (no pun) out of the oil by engine heat.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

Oil temp is more critical than water temp. The water temp gauge seems to be electrically damped (like the BMW) - it just goes to 175 degrees F and stays there...

The oil temp varies much more. On a 70 degree F day, I'll get 175 degree F water in 5 minutes or less... the oil temp takes 15 minutes to get to 210 degrees F.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

I always base correct operating temp using oil temp. I like to have oil temp at 200+F so that any moisture boils off.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

In my experience it doesn't matter how hard you drive it you still get some deposit left on the oil filler cap.

    Re: MAYONNAISE??

OK, called my OPC and they said "the car was probably outside when waiting for delivery and some condensation got trapped into the oil system. There shouldn't be any in the engine because of operating temps etc - just at the top of the oil system where the cap forms." Very keen to point out that this is not the dreaded engine-killing sludge. Told me to wipe off the mayonnaise from the filler area a few times and it should go away as there will then be no more moisture trapped in the system.

I'll try this and keep you posted.

    SoS.
