    AMS test drive!

auto motor sport did the first test drive of the 997tt.

    I summarize the main points:

    1. overboost option a must
    2. car pulling very strongly, but even with overboost does not offer a totally new performance feeling compared to the 996tt
    3. engine feels even more like a big displacement engine thanks to the VGT technology
    4. using the shift gear is to be considered a 'luxury' given the excellent elasticity
    5. very stable at high speed with low wind noises
    6. suspension are tight but still comfortable at low speeds, in real GT tradition
    7. new 4wd seems to allow excellent - and unspectacular, ie efficient- roadhandling.
    8. final sentence of the test: the turbo is the perfect choice for clients who like to get their Mercedes from Porsche.

My take: usual excellent allround charakter we already know from the 996tt with some good improvement which in everyday life will be rather marginal. the excitement factor is not the reason why to buy a 997tt (as it wasnt probably for the 996tt either). Personally I would have wished a bit more rawness without having to switch to the gt3, but I guess that's very personal.

    cheers

    turbolite,
Very good short summery! As I said article is positive, but...
My take: some of my 4months old opinion came to my mind-new 997 Turbo is more competition for SL55AMG then for F430, Gallardo or Vette Z06. Shame or not?? Only time will tell...

    I agree.

Looks as if Porsche has decided to stick firmly to the GT tradition with the Turbo, without hinting at the sportier customers. So the comps here are the AMDB9, SL55 etc. not the 430 or the Gallardo. those will have to compete with the gt2 (also pricewise). this leaves the gt3, which has been softened compared to the older version as a cheaper alternative - or the z06 which is more GT than a gt3 and still as fast as the new turbo - at half the price.

ps: I think it will be hard for myself (and some other 996tt drivers) to justify spending some 90000 euro on top of my 996tt trade in to get a 997tt. permance and performance-feeling in everyday circumstances do not seem to differ much at all. we'll have to testdrive ourselves...

...as was the old one already, so the differences are not big..

But the 997TT will beat (probably) the F430, Gallardo or Z06 on the track whereby the SL55 (or SL63) wouldn't even come close to put in a competitive time..

More important than that, the TT should be able to keep its poise on any racetrack, something that you wouldn't want to try on your SL or DB9 (as much as I admire the later)!

We have only seen the first summary of the very first brief test - so don't count on this alone.
Apart from that the ride comfort seemed to be an issue for a lot of customers in the 996 TT, so what's so bad about improving this as well?

Exactly. Hence my visit to Sportec tomorrow. Should get some interesting performance for a fraction of the price of the trade in. We'll see!

Ride comfort?!? What the heck were they doing in a 996TT if they were worried about ride comfort?!? Let them buy a Mercedes or Lexus if they are worried about ride comfort.
Performance is king. If it has to take a back-seat to comfort... well that's what the Panamera is for.

    Re: AMS test drive!

    cool! keep me posted please...

Pierre, didn't your Turbo had more than 200.000Km ? Is this the car you're going to take to Sportec

I've been asking myself the exact same question for a few days now. The only rational explanation I can find is that he wants his engine to go out with a bang .

    Re: AMS test drive!

I think Pierre has a new engine in his 996tt...

You mean he's going to install a new engine or he actually HAS a new engine already? The best thing would be to install a 700 HP upgrade. They almost entirely replace the engine anyway and you have lots of ponies to play with.

    Re: AMS test drive!

He has rebuild engine already as far as I know...

    Re: AMS test drive!

    Thanks Turbolite,
    Nice to read.
Basically, the 996 Turbo, but better!
Great all rounder, superb GT with proper sports car credential!
It might not be in direct competition with the F430 etc for shear supercar presence but it performs better!
    Still get a GT3 though.

    ride comfort

sorry I don't completely agree - IMO the stock 996tt was too harsh given the level of handling (not grip)it provided. The stock 996tt suspension had too much vertical motion considering the harshnes over expansion joints, potholes etc.
PASM will solve both problems so what me worry.

The harshness and handling performance variables are two sides of a complex equation of personal tastes and needs.
And that doesn't relegate me to a Lexus

Correct. It now shows almost 240'000km. However, it got a new engine at 217'000km.

But this is all off-topic, and... I gotta go to Sportec!
