The issue may be bigger than Porsche thinks.

I was in a restaurant this afternoon and two men in their 40's are seated next to my table. They were articulate ,well dressed and obviously successful.

They got on the subject of cars and one started to discuss buying a Boxster. However, he indicated he had concerns because the car was not perceived as a "true" Porsche. Also, he has noticed a lot more women driving Boxsters.

The other individual responded by agreeing with his concerns and added it did not make sense to buy a Carrera because they all look alike and there appeared to be a ton of them on the road. They went on a discuss other cars which I will not mention.

These guy's are Porsches' target audience and if they feel that way where is the company headed?

i was likewise sitting in a restaurant, and i too overheard two posers talking about a ferrari.. they particuarly wanted something to "pick up chicks" as they called it. and they agreed that it had to turn heads and be very loud, while at the same time making an statement to all other road users, saying something like: im better than you

thats when i realized that i dont want a farrari and remembered two girls talking about the ride of their life in a boxster!!! LOL

As for the Boxster not being a real Porsche, hey, it's got the same engine (M96), albeit smaller, as the 911.

So these two guys can't tell a Boxster for a 911 yet talk at length about cars. Yet I would bet they can tell the difference between all the Mercedes from a mile away which all look alike even more.

Hey, I am only reporting what I heard. I don't agree with the Boxster not being a True Porsche but I agree the Carrera has been exploited beyond recognition between models.

BTW just to set the record straight. I am not a McDonald person. Starbucks YES!

They are the PERFECT Ferrari customer - so insecure that they worry about how they would look in a car, not how it drives on a nice day on a winding road , where even a Miata could be a blast. Good one, Nick.

nick, you actually like starbucks? You must know very little about REALLY good coffee.

I buy my beans from a fantastic company in Covent Garden called Drury Tea & Coffee. My favourite is called 'Siena Riserva' (8 parts arabica to 1 part robusta). They're the beans used by Gordon Ramsay in all his restaurants (he's a Michelin 3 star chef in the UK). Anyway, I mill my own beans (one should NEVER 'grind' coffee) fresh to the right coarseness and then I make perfect espresso (in my Gaggia coffee machine). I was taught by a Master Barista from Gaggia (a guy that trains other Baristas).

Starbucks is watery rubbish. Can't believe you actually admit to liking that stuff.

Here in the UK, the only chain that sells half decent coffee is Costa. Their Mocha Italia beans are good.

Hey Easy, your post perfectly explains why the two guys Nick reported about are NOT Porsche's target audience - they are simply no enthusiasts (neither regarding sportscars nor regardinng coffee or any other good things in life

)
As for the Starbucks stuff: reminds me of the old joke about american beer. What's the difference between making love in a canoe and American beer ? Well, there is none - both times just f...ing close to water

Couldn't resist - and of course there are exceptions to the rule - like a good Sam Adams

Nick's theory about Porsche getting into trouble reminds me of those financial analysts who always claim that somewhen the sky will fall down. Of course at the end they're always right, because it's always a matter of time only when the next financial crisis will occur (maybe within 5 or 10 or 50 years - who knows). But then they can refer to their old predictions and will say: I've told you so !
It's the same with Nick - at the end of the days he will be right. Maybe in twenty years, when Nick has retired and will be sitting in the back of an S-class Merc - driven by a Pro chauffeur

- Porsche's factory will be detroyed by a big fire (god may prevent Porsche from this) and Nick will have his big day posting a new thread on Rennteam with the title "I've told you so - Porsche is in deep sh..t".

They got on the subject of camels and one started to discuss buying a Two Humps. However, he indicated he had concerns because the animal was not perceived as a "true" camel .Also, he has noticed a lot more tourists riding them.

The other individual responded by agreeing with his concerns and added it did not make sense to buy a One Hump because they all look alike and there appeared to be a ton of them in the desert. They went on to discuss other mammals which I will not mention.

These guy's are Desert Warriors and if they feel that way where is the camel headed?

My post was not just intended to show how poor Starbucks coffee is but (as you pointed out subtly) that people who buy Porsches can be very picky and demanding not just in cars but in all other things in life e.g. coffee.

BTW, I missed out a few tips for all you coffee aficionados!

When you buy coffee, either milled fresh (make sure the coarseness is for 'espresso use' only) or whole beans, make sure they vacuum seal it and don't just pack it in a non-airtight bag, container or tin.

When you get home, freeze it. Coffee in a vacuum sealed bag lasts a maximum of 9 months. If you freeze it, you keep the freshness and flavour for up to 2 years.

When you take it out of the freezer, don't worry - no need to thaw/defrost it. It doesn't contain water! You just mill it directly. Remember, at least 6-7 grams per cup!

Make sure your filter holder in your espresso machine is really hot and your cups are warm too so that the coffee doesn't cool too quickly.

Oh my, freezing fresh whole bean coffee? I don't think so. You Brit's should stick to tea.

I have my coffee flown in from Hawaii every month. It is from the Koa coffee plantation their special reserve blend. I "mill" it each morning. BTW, serving it in a warm cup is a another fallacy. A good coffee cup is all that is required. No plastic or synthetic materials.

Regarding the comments from the two I overheard, I did recognize they were not into the performance issue but the marque. Porsche is targeting these people and if they have these concerns so should Porsche.
