    Re: 997 vs Cayenne

I can understand the fun truck that hauls ass thing, except the Cayenne really doesn't work as a "truck", you can't haul a major appliance in it, or piece of furniture, or landscaping supplies. Just people and luggage and small assorted stuff.

I used to have a Ford Lightning. Cruder than a Cayenne by a mile, yes. But fun and fast? OHHHH YESSSS.... Several hundred bucks in bolt-on mods, and a custom-programmed chip, and it ran low-low 13's in the quarter, and obliterated the two different Cayenne Turbos I raced on the street. All that, and it could haul my motorcyle in the bed.

Anyhow, I don't think your ideas bad at all, you get to keep the 997, and gain a Cayenne. Not bad.

But if you want something REALLY fast and don't want to break the bank, I'd do a Lightning or an SRT-10. Or one of those new SRT-8 Jeep deal-ios.

    Take care!!

Is it obvious that I like cheap cars that go like hell?? I have the 997 for my refined side...

Reading that made me recognize a difference between European (well, German, at least) and American car usage habits. You don't see many pickup trucks here. What you do see for hauling major appliances, furniture, landscaping supplies or garden trash is small two-wheeled trailers hitched up to SUVs or family sedans. My wife's 4x4 has a tow hitch on it for just that purpose. It means you can keep a car in good condition, but still transport heavy, bulky, dirty stuff when you need to.

Don't remember seeing too many small trailers being used when I've been driving around in the states.

From which we conclude that you put a lot of miles on your 997.

Would you consider getting a Z06 then?

I'm not a fan of the styling of the C6 inside or out, but I could totally understand owning one. It's a different recipe than the 997 for certain, but there's no arguing its extreme value and face-distorting performance. I'd own one if I could justify it as a "toy", but it would probably be irritating to drive as much as I do my 997, so I doubt you'll be seeing a post from me exclaiming "I just bought a Z06!!" any time soon.

As for using trailers, that seems like such an absolute pain in the ass to me, because who drives around 24-7 with their trailer hooked to their car? So, if you've got to go home to GET IT every time you've got a notion to buy something that requires it.. or if you've got to pre-plan and anticipate every purchase... Forget about it, I'm a busy, spur-of-the-moment guy. I never have to worry about logistics.. I can be sitting at work, get done with all the busy stuff on my desk early, and say, "you know, I've got time to swing by that store and pick up that new pool furniture my wife wanted...", or "I keep forgetting to go shopping for those 30 stepping stones I want to put from the drive to the gate, so I'll go right now.." and bingo, I'm off, it's done. It's not an afternoon worth of pre-planning and trailer acquisition. Or if we're driving somewhere, and see a cool antique store or market... we can pull over and shop knowing that ANYTHING we might see that we like, it's coming with us. I don't have to commit to a second trip in the near future just to retrieve the booty.

I've got several trailers, but they are large for hauling cars. But I'll never own a little trailer... I get hung up enough when I drive my Porsche to work, and my wife calls me asking me to pick up this or that, and I have to remind her that I drove the Carrera that day..

    Re: 997 vs Cayenne

Any shop that sells things large enough to require a trailer should handle delivery to your house (for a fee of course).
At least it's how it works in Europe. Even our local Wal-Mart equivalents and Ikea do it.

Why drive around 24/7 with a flat bed when you only need it once a month? Or did you buy the Porsche roof transport system for those times you might drive past an antique store in your 911?

Great, so now you get to arrange for a time during the day when you would normally be working to meet the bozos at home, or you tell your wife to ruin her schedule by staying home and waiting, and they'll invariably be late and off-schedule, so that they can deliver something.. And you pay for the service... Why am I not seeing the convenience in that??...

Loading old furniture that may or may-not be structurally sound on the roof of my 911?? That's not happening.

Fact is, today's modern trucks are just as comfy and quiet and heaped with accessories and options as cars are, so there's really no "penalty" in hauling that bed around behind me. I find myself using the bed of my truck for things that wouldn't fit, or I wouldn't dare infesting my Porsche with, at least once a week, not once a month.

But I'm afraid this debate must be boring everyone to tears.

    Re: 997 vs Cayenne

That's why I get the stuff delivered on a Saturday. It sure beats having to parallel park an F150 double cab in a European medieval city!
