    Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    1) In the U.S., what is the reason Ferrari provides a 2 yr./unlimited mile warranty on their new cars versus
    Maserati's 4 yr./50k mi. warranty and Porsche's warranty?

    U.S.A. New Porsche warranty:
    Basic: 4 yr. / 50,000 mi.
    Drivetrain: 4 yr. / 50,000 mi.
    Roadside: 4 yr. / 50,000 mi.
    Rust: 10 yr. / Unlimited mi.

    From Porsche USA website:
    * 4 years warranty for all new vehicles;
    * 2-year warranty for genuine Porsche parts, exchange parts and accessories, which are used or sold outside of warranty work. The warranty period for Porsche parts which are used in connection with warranty work ends contemporaneously with the warranty period for the purchased item which has become defective;
    * 3 years for the paintwork;
    * 10-year long-life warranty against rust holes in the bodyshell. (please refer to the conditions in the Warranty and Maintenance handbook)

    Porsche Approved Warranty is 2 years / 100,000 miles, once the vehicle is outside the original vehicle warranty period.

    2) What are the warranties in Europe and the rest of the world for Ferrari and Porsche? Is this the ROW warranty for Porsche:

    * 2 years warranty for all new vehicles;
    * 2-year warranty for genuine Porsche parts, exchange parts and accessories, which are used or sold outside of warranty work. The warranty period for Porsche parts which are used in connection with warranty work ends contemporaneously with the warranty period for the purchased item which has become defective;
    * 3 years for the paintwork;
    * 10-year long-life warranty against rust holes in the bodyshell. (please refer to the conditions in the Warranty and Maintenance handbook)

    Under certain conditions, a 1-year Approved Warranty can also be effected for used Porsche vehicles.

    3) Also in the U.S. regarding extended warranties, Porsche offers new cars (for a fee) and used cars (no fee) with a 6 yr./100,000 mile warranty, correct? Ferrari offers a complicated "Power" tier-system extended warranty on their new and used cars. Is the Ferrari Power extended warranty as good or better than Porsche's extended warranty?

    4) In the U.S., is it true some new Ferrari's receive a 2 yr/unlimited while other new Ferrari's receive a 3yr/unlimited?

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    My '04 360 and '05 F430 were both covered under 3 yr/unlimited miles warranty.

    Gary, does/did a 2 yr./unlimited warranty currently/previously exist?

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    If the statement below is true, I find it strange and wonder if this is one of the reasons why the v12 Ferrari's take a depreciation hit:

    All Ferrari vehicles with an eight-cylinder engine come with 3-year / unlimited.

    Are the Ferrari V12's less reliable than the Ferrari V8's?

    http://www.warrantybynet.com/manu_warranty2.asp

    In addition, I find the following statement from the Ferrari North America site strange when, unless I am mistaken, Porsche does not exclude the CGT from the usual Porsche warranty:

    POWER coverage cannot be purchased for special series Ferraris such as the Enzo Ferrari or F50.

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    Recently, Ferrari required the purchase of an additional year warranty (3-4 years) for $5800.00.

    I was forced to buy it.

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    I don't think you can buy the 6y warranty unless it is a CPOed car.

    Sorry, I have no idea. I'm new to the Ferrari world.

    Strange, Nick. Are European owners also forced to purchase it like you were? What happens if you refuse?

    You do not get the car. They also forced me to buy a navigation system which is virtually useless.

    The warranty, though expensive, does make the car more saleable should I want to sell it. It also would increase the car value. The Nav. system which cost $600 was sold to us at cost to Ferrari. I surmise they were stuck with many of them and foist them on us.

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    So you are getting a $200K car new but you can't get exactly what you want... I guess that's the price to pay to own an F car in the US... Sad.

    I know of several 430 buyers who got the nav without asking for it or paying for it...did they actually charge you for the unit?

    Gary I believe Ferrari charged its cost on the unit. I doubt they give anything away.

    seems so. i wonder how much they still have... even the car my friend collected three weeks ago was equipped with this prehistoric becker unit. they should put them on ebay instead -- "BAIL OUT! 10,000 authentic ferrari nav units, unused!".

    Re: Ferrari versus Porsche New Car and Extended Warranty

    2 yr warr on US F 12s. Hear that 575/612 is roughly as reliable as 430/360 (or 996TTS).

    F sells 300ish/yr 12s into US. Perhaps most elite buyer base demographic in car world, along w/65s....fast-depreciating $200-350K cars often used for daily commuting, by guys (most often in places like SF/Woodside/Greenwich) who know about deprec and still want these old/deep-money, low-profile cars....I doubt warr dur would change their decision....most will only keep car for yr or so, before moving on to 599/612 HGTC/'07 CL65 etc.....know of 5-10 guys in SF region who commute daily via 575/612....most common other commuter car they use is SL/CL55/65 (or recently moved out of CL b/c bored of body and dash after owning several CL55/600/65 copies over past 5 yrs)

    Do they use the depreciation as a business tax deduction?
    Or do they consider the loss a relative insignificance?

    In Greenwich, most of the buyers tend to be hedge fund guys; in SF/Woodside, it's tech guys, venture capitalists and hedge fund guys....generally, very quant and financially astute characters

    Fairly uncommon for techies/hedgies/VCs to try to run their car costs through their business....I suspect any car is fairly immaterial.....but I do know that these guys will often spend much time optimizing a tax- and capital-efficient structure to own/lease their planes (a $50MM bird costs $5-10K/hr of flt time in oper costs)....perhaps a more material expense for those who fly a fair amt for business/pleasure..... ...suddenly, the deprec on F 12's seems fairly trivial, doesn't it?

    Not surprisingly, where I've most often seen a notably high concentration of 612/575/65 casually parked, gathering dust while waiting for owners to return, is at the pkg lot for the private air terminal at places like SFO...

    Thank you, all. I now have a wider perspective on this issue.
