    keep wondering how those electric motors that actuate the variable blades, and appear to be integral to the turbo assembly, don't end up fried by the extreme heat.

    they're probably encapsulated in highly heat-resistant materials.

    I would say that they are controlled by hydraulic action (oil) not electric motors. The heat wouldn't let an electric motor do its thing reliably. I may be wrong of course..

    OK so now I read the product guide and understand. A ring controls all the blades (linked together) and the electric motor is not too close to the hot parts-it's mounted on the cool part of the turbo (air-side not exhaust side.). And no wastegate, but air blow off valve. Interesting.

    This is a worldwide premiere of this technique in a fuel operated car. No wonder it is "interesting".
    You should also wonder how a small manufacturer like Porsche was actually able to put this technology on the market before any other of the big players.

    Out of all the car manufacturers in the world, I would say Porsche has by far the most experience in turbo charging engines so it should come as no surprise that they were first to release this tech. By the way, I forget which car it was but didn't some american car company make a car with this tech in the 80's? I am pretty sure it didn't work well for them but I am confident in Porsche's ability to develope these turbos to work flawlessly.

    this issue has been raised before, but i wonder what this means for aftermarket tuners
