    Manual better for overboost?

After reading the training manual for the 997TT, I have a question about overboost in the Tiptronic vs. Manual.

So, you're in the tiptronic, floor the accelerator, and you have 10 seconds of overboost (after which you are going very fast ) After that, you have no more overboost as you accelerate to top speed.

Now, in the manual, the overboost will reset after each gear change because you lift off the accelerator right?

Therefore, it seems like you will "run out" of overboost in the Tiptronic after 10 seconds, but will have it in every gear in the manual, and then the full 10 seconds once you get into sixth.

    Is this right?

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

overboost is available for ten seconds in the range of about 2200 to 5000 rpm. in any gear at any speed.

And it is sufficient to shortly release the throttle and you have another 10 seconds again.
But it is also my understanding, that you HAVE to FULLY apply the throttle to activate the overboost.

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

    This is my point.

If you are accelerating as quickly as possible in the Tiptronic, you are just going to keep it floored the whole time, right? So your boost is over after 10 seconds.

In the manual, you also floor it, but lift off to change, and thereby reset your 10 seconds of boost.

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

tip is the way to go... especially with overboost...its all specically mapped to work together better with tip.

for me you are right..but i tell nothing..

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

My first post where at last I feel I can add to the high quality of posts here. Even with the throttle flat to the floor with Tiptronic, I believe overboost will be reset when you are accelerating over 5000 rpm as it is only possible to benefit from overboost below 5000rpm.

    maybe you are right too..

maybe the reset of the overboost is not when you take out gas,but when overboost end his "work par gear"

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

Even if overboost reset is firmly linked to the throttle valve closing, the throttle valve will still close even for the brief gear change done by the Tiptronic box as otherwise the engine would overrun with ones foot to floor. Quote from the documentation "When the throttle valve closes quickly (overrun)"

    That is correct.

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

One thing I have been wondering about this whole "overboost" feature is whether it also increases the HP ratings too. I already know that it takes the TQ from 457 ft to 502 ft for about 10 seconds but what about the HP numbers. Does it increase from 473 hp to anything higher than that?

    Re: Manual better for overboost?

Atomic80, this has been covered in some detail in another thread, but in brief HP is only boosted in the overboost function range below 5000rpm. As peak HP is developed above 5000rpm peak HP of 480 is not increased, but HP available at 2200-5000 rpm overboost range is higher as HP is just a function of torque and rpm. Hope that helps.

This would theoretically make a difference only in the 5th gear (Tiptronic). But since the manual has 6 gears, a comparison is difficult, especially since the gear ratio is different too.
Of course the manual is slightly faster in this speed range, also because the manual has one gear more and the 5th gear of the Tip is pretty "long". But since the Tip is part of the whole system and shifts at least as fast as manual shifting (considering a pro driver drives it and knows how to shift fast), the difference is less significant than it may appear. Also, like I said before: it should suffice to slightly remove the foot from the throttle, maybe even only bit, to re-engage the overboost for another 10 seconds. But since the overboost works only the a certain rev range, this whole stuff is nice to think about and it is interesting but doesn't really give any indication of which shifting system is "better" for overboost. Judging by the extreme torque figure initiated by the overboost, I'd say that Tiptronic is better. But I think we have to wait until we actually drive these cars to be able to tell.
