and perhaps requiring the teams to reveal their technology at the end of the season.

That would be a game changer, I'ld love to see that, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen.

F1 teams are built around secrecy and generating a hype out of the smallest and most obvious "innovation". This thinking is not only on a team level, every single person is breathing this. You have a simple idea, try if it works, and then find some very complicated explanation on how you ended up with that idea to make it appear as valuable as possible.

If you remove that cloak of secrecy, you will fundamentally change all teams and how they work. I think it would give good engineers the possibility to thrive and cut through a lot of bullshit. But it would also massively reduce the budget for innovation.

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

F1 should start from a clean box again.

Have a energy consumption formula, like WEC, so any configuration of engine could be possible.

Deregulate the body design, so outside of open wheel and a set car dimensions, teams could do creative things. Hell even go back to 6 wheels or something.

I don't think it would. If you just copy last year's best design, you'll end up behind the teams that take it and do something new and innovative on top of it to get ahead of everyone. So the incentive to innovate, and the budgets to do so, will be just as strong as ever, maybe even more so, since you can't at all "rest on your laurels" until the next rule change just because you came up with something clever one year, or someone else will eat your lunch.

And the team that came up with it still derives something of an advantage with it since they can start innovating on top of it before the end of the season, before everyone else, and keep that innovation temporarily secret, as long as they don't use it in this year's car.

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

Drivers are hampered these days by having to conserve fuel usage and tyre wear!  What we want to see is the 'drivers skill at driving' being the ultimate test, along with no limit on manufacturers' testing time for new design innovations...

Well, that was a pretty exciting race to watch!
Glad to see Vettel putting the Mercedes' under pressure and too bad that his little mishap happened at such a crucial point.
Max was impressive as always but hampered by "misunderstandings" in the pit strategy. I didn't enjoy him winging over the radio though; if he was so much faster than Sainz, he should have just overtaken him. I can imagine he was disappointed (I saw the post race interview with him in Dutch, where he mentioned "I couldn't give a rat's ass about that one single point"), but it made a bit of an entitled impression. He might be a prodigy, but he should work just as hard as the other guys, and Sainz did not do a bad job either.

I was a guest of Renault team on the weekend. What a great weekend and first time I've been to the Renualt garage having previously been to Redbull, Ferrari, McLaren and Caterham. Obviously it was a well oiled team despite the new name as it is just the old Lotus team. Love the new colours!

Anyway, the qualifying was a major flop. I was at the hospitality tent during the qualifying which was right next to the pit straight so we could see all the action in pit lane. We were all confused as to what was going on as we could see the Ferraris not coming out then seeing the drivers walk out. Everyone was going "is this it???" and it was a major anti climax. Glad this will never be repeated again!

Race day was great. The action was fantastic and I was very impressed with the Red Bull of Dan Ricciardo. I think as Renualt crank up the power throughout the year (hopefully), we will see RBR fight with Ferrari. The Alonso crash was scary, and my friend was a track marshal on turn 3 and saw everything happening right in front of him. He could not believe Alonso just walked out. Full credit to McLaren/FIA.

    Bring on Bahrain!

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

Yep,, Alonso was out of the car and clearly looked dazed. So glad he seems okay, his wrecked car was a incredible mess. so much so that Sky Sport did not spot it immediately ..

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

They moved the wrecked car on a flat bed truck from T3 back to McLaren after the completion of the race. Because the track is full of people by this time the truck was moving at a very slow pace. I happened to be walking along the track and had a chance to take a good look at it up close. It was completely destroyed, but the core cell was completely intact! Incredible strength. Here's a pic of it. I was so preoccupied with checking out the wrecked that I forgot to take a photo until it was past me.

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

Wasn't Alonso involved in a similar, although not nearly as horrible, crash last season? I seem to recall something similar where, at much slower speed, one car rode up over the other's rear wheel and the driver's head in the bottom car was very much at risk as the two cars slid along the barrier.

Won't they ever learn with these stupid gimmicks? The problem with this format, even in Q1 & Q2 was that by the time you ended up on the bubble, you didn't have time to put in a fast lap, unless you had already started one. So, even then, there was no time to recover, you might as well just pit the car. And, if they allow flying laps to count, then someone else ends up unexpectedly on the bubble. So, basically, once the eliminations start, it's pretty much over, and you might as well pit. The way I see it, all the sessions will likely become like Q3 at Melbourne in any variation of this format; there's just no way to fix it.

This is really sad for Formula 1 that they are reduced to stupid gimmicks to make what ought to be the most exciting series in motorsport interesting for the fans. They have really lost their way, and need desperately to find it again. Unfortunately, their desperation seems to only be leading them to cheapen the sport more and more in misguided and fruitless attempts to, "liven it up." They need to think about the basics of racing, not silly side show frills. The next thing you know they'll be trying out the stupid suggestion I read somewhere that they could liven it up with random fake rain events -- i.e., wet down the track with sprinklers to simulate rain and force cars onto wet tires for some period in each race. Yeesh.

No, actually, that one, involving the "unlucky" Raikkonen, was a bit different: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQN3MavG3jU

Yes, that one was pretty "spectacular" too. It's is amazing how safe they've managed to make these cars and yet still things like what happened to Jules Bianchi can happen.

I wonder if the "Halo" as currently conceived could have actually saved Bianchi in his accident. I know it's supposed to be able to deflect oncoming debris, like flying wheels, but is it strong enough to stop a car heading under what is effectively an immovable object? Of course, it's probably impossible to design and build a car that could protect a driver from every possible danger, but I'm glad they don't stop trying.

Re: 2016 Australian F1 Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne

Bianchi's was a freak accident, cannot be grouped together with 'racing' accidents.

The only driver I can think of that might be saved by the Halo design is the greatest F1 driver ever, Senna. But then again it might not depending on the angle, as the broken suspension arm basically pierced his skull through the visor opening.
