    Strange thing about clear sidemarkers: why so "unsafe?"

    Did you notice the clears have no reflectors in them? (or at least mine don't!).

    They merely have some silvery striations in them that are somewhat "reflective" but are NOT the genuine major multitudinous facet-tation that real reflectors made out of plastic have.

    I wonder what legal or DOT snaffu results in our clears having to be made from lesser non-reflective mtls. BTW, same thing goes with my BMW aftermarket clears.

    Freaky huh?

    I think the DOT have their heads where the sun doesn't shine. The combination brake light / turn signal is exceedingly dangerous. The rest of the world have it right by using an amber turn signal that in no way can be confused with a brake signal.

    I just put Porsche OEM clears on my C4S. You're right, MMD - the faceted reflector of the original Pumpkin side markers ain't there - just 5 or 6 ridges that may or may not reflect anything...

    I believe that the clears I bought are actually Euro parts - not US. All of the type on the box is in German. That being said - I think it's the US DOT that requires the orange reflector surface... and the Euro side marker does not.

    My theory? Well, the reflector would only "reflect" at night, correct? When an oncoming car's headlights bounced off of it - assuming a right angle approach - or impending crash. OK. The next assumption is: if the sidemarker is on, the reflective element would be diminished - that is, not needed, as the light is the visible component...

    Summary: nobody in Europe would be stupid enough to run at night without their lights on - so they don't need the reflective element. Of course, in the US, idiots with their headlights / markerlights off at night are almost as common as women putting on eye makeup while driving at 75mph...

    There you have it - the US DOT is protecting us against ourselves! <g>

    The clear look is fantastic. Just purchased the clear side markers for my soon to be car. I had no choice!! I showed the Clear and Orange difference to my wife.....Oh, now every pic I show her it is the first thing out of her mouth! I have to chuckle, I can't believe how cheap they are. $11 a side!!! Just something I didn't expect.

    Yeah, I've always been a defensive driver, but this car has made me soooo much more defensive. I appreciate the fact that everyone wants to check it out - that fact makes me proud <g> - but, OTHO, I want them to watch the road first!

    Well, I guess: when you're talking on the phone, putting on eye makeup and drinking a Starbucks while driving at 80mph in traffic, a Porsche going by is the final distraction...

    30% talking, 30% eye makeup, 10% drinking, 30% looking at the pretty car == 0% driving. Damn!
