    Problem with high speed cornering?

I am wondering whether anyone has experienced this: During cornering at high speed (around 60/70mph), the car seems to keep going straight and to the outer edge of the turn rather than towards the direction of the turn. Is this the so-called "understeer"? I thought the 997 should not have a lot of understeer?

Re: Problem with high speed cornering?

This is indeed understeer. A rear-engine car like the 911 actually understeers, but can oversteer if you're not careful (or if you do it deliberately ).
The car will not turn unless you shift some of the weight towards the front. Just brake a bit, position the car, then floor it.

Of course, if you brake while turning, then you will oversteer.

This phenomenon is not as noticeable on the 996/997 as on older 911 because the weight balance is more... balanced, but it still is noticeable.

My old 996 C4 understeered way more than my current 997S.
    Makes sense.

Re: Problem with high speed cornering?

You could try not turning in too sharply to minimise the understeer (aswell as braking as Groom suggests).

If you turn in too sharply the amount of grip needed is much greater to pull the front around. Try a slower more progressive turning motion. I always tended to turn in too quickly, probalbly still do.

    Have fun

Re: Problem with high speed cornering?

Also, if you are in a controlled environment, such as on a track, or autocross course you can actually "unwind" the steering wheel a little bit to cause the front tires to regain their grip, which reduces the slip angle, and helps the car to turn......

LOOK where you want to go !

Hey! That's the "fun" of it, I'm always turning in too quickly. Good way to wake up the other driver waiting for me the stop signs!

Re: Problem with high speed cornering?

It is a common misconception that 911's naturally oversteer. Rear weight bias = "tail happy" right? Rear engine = unsafe at any speed right?

The first thing to recognize is that any car can be made to over or understeer. What I am referring to is the behavior of the car under a specific set of circumstances (deliberate or otherwise). If you want to, you can make any car, regardless of where the engine is or what the weight distribution is, either over or understeer. This must be distinguished from the natural handling characteristiccs of the car. Once this is understood, the reason for the confusion becomes clear.

The natural tendancy of a 911 will be to understeer because of the huge amount of grip on the rear wheels. However, the 911 has a reputation for oversteer because of the common occurrence of oversteer that would occur under the following specific (and common) circumstance: a driver enters a turn and experiences understeer -> the natural tendancy is to slow down to gain better control, or lift off the throttle -> this reduces the grip of the rear tires and changes the yaw so that the car then oversteers as the rear end swings out.

The AWD 911's have always tended to MUCH more natural understeer than their RWD counterparts. This was a HUGE issue on the 964, and from the opinion of many folks around here, on the 996 too. Porsche specifically tried to address the issue on the 997C4's, and so far, it seems that they've done a good job of it, though I have to admit that I remain skeptical, especially since the tires on the 997 C4 and C4S are SO FAT. I have yet to drive a 997 C4, so I can't speak from experience, but I was well aware of the added natural tendancy to understeer on the 996 C4S, and I don't consider myself a great driver by any means.
