Re: Review AMV8
The car is stunningly beautiful. I can't get over it, but it does have its' quirks. Some buttons have gotten stuck while pressed , such as deactivating the passenger side airbag, and the brake handle didn't release easily. It needed to be jiggled a bit before doing so. The view from the rear view mirror is horrendously small as are some nasty blind spots behind both seats. The dashboard controls are tiny. I keep pressing the wrong buttons. The interior size is also a bit closterphobic. The dashboard is high and close to you and with that really low roofline tall guys better watch out. As you can see from the picture, I'm pretty much average height.
But.....The car is so damned beautiful. It howls at high revs almost like a Ferrari and like its' big brothers the curvatures are sublime. The bespoke cabin makes you feel like something special. A friend of mine has the DB9 and he warned me that the car is a lemon. He claims to have it in the shop once a month for nearly a week at a time since he bought it a year ago. All the expenses have been paid, but it has been really annoying. I asked him why hasn't he traded it in for an SL Mercedes or even the new Jag (two cars I think are in a similiar class as far as looks) his answer was their is nothing like owning this car. I won't have the same attitude with my Vantage. If it doesn't work properly, it will go.
One other point, while comparing the car with the 997, the smart money buys the 997. The Aston begs you to go faster, but because of all the things I mentioned before, I don't feel quite safe enough to do so. Don't get me wrong, I've pushed it over 100mph but that was on a relatively lonely highway. The 997 is restrained in comparison. Very fast and quick off the line but with excellent visibility and 40 years of refinement and improvement its' lighter body and more spacious cabin gives you more confidence to do whatever you want it to.
Ideally, Porsche will produce the upcoming Panamera and decide to do a 2 door version of it. I believe that given the general shape of the Vantage and given that the CEO of Aston Martin was previously at Porsche, the Vantage is a modern interpretation of the 928. Give me some of that Aston style with Porsche engineering, and you have another sale!!!!
