Rattle at cold start

After 8k miles I am still trilled with my 997s (non PSE), but the 5 second rattle in the exhaust at cold start up is an embarrassment. The mechanic at the dealer says it is normal and nothing is being harmed... just my pride. Has anyone found a way to prevent this "normal" start up rattle?

I wanted to know whats up with that too..The dealer said the first minute, it's normal for the throttle to keep adjusting itself..cant stop it.
Sounds like a beetle for a minute, in the morning, that doesnt want to get out of bed...

This is definitely a normal sound for a 997. I asked my dealer and have read other threads on this (I think on Rennlist).
I have to admit, I do NOT like the cold start engine sounds - almost sounds like it's knocking for the first 10-20 secs. My wife has even commented on it!

I was also concerned when I first heard the start-up rattle.
My dealer told me that it was normal and caused by a pump which activates to speed-up the heating process of the cats.

Maybe BS but so many of us have it I guess it must be normal.

strange, i have not noticed any rattles on mine. will listen more closely when i go to start it within the next hour....

If you have PSE with the "always on" mod, you will not hear it as clearly, but it is still there.

Funny, I actually like it. This was also an issue on M3's so I am wondering if it is related to quad exhausts ? Any C2 owners have this problem/feature?

I just had my car in for the tip repair and had them check the rattle as well (if only I had seen this post before it would have saved me a little worrying). They told me when the car was ready that they checked other cars and that they all do it. Seems as if high performance sports cars have little excentricities. I had both an E36 and E46 M3 and they both had little oddities about them, in the end I think it adds to the character of the car if it is not a real problem.

Mine also had a rattle when I started the engine for the first time when I picked it up at the dealer .
It sounded as though something was loose on the exhaust system .
It's normal and you have to get used to it.

This should help everybody feel better

All the reviewers said our cars sound like a bucket of bolts at warm up. So don't worry about it when cold. There's a heck of alot going on in the engine (any engine) and Porsche didn't design them to sound good at idle.

When they get warmer they sound better but still our engines are not known for purring like kittens at idle.

I'm just going on what I read in mags and heard on net.

I hope y'all feel a bit better.

Love that review, (Bucket of Bolts at warm up) when the car costs oh about 100k..plus.

I agree with you. I love the sound. Almost wish it always sounded like that at idle. To me it sounds nasty! And I mean nasty in a good way

it should have had two big outlets instead.

If you have PSE with the "always on" mod, you have to listen closely, but you can still hear it a little.

If you have PSE without the "always on" mod, you will hear it loud and clear because at startup, the exhaust sounds the same with and without PSE. Unless you are fast enough to press the "sport" button after start-up. At which point, I'm not sure. I'll have to undo the mod to really find out.
