    When will Cayman break 300hp?

I read on the Boxster board a rumor the S will get 295HP for the 2007 model. Can we assume the 2007 Cayman S will have more than 300HP if this rumor turns out to be true?

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

    I don't think so.

First of all, the Cayman will not break the psychological 300hp barrier before the 911 facelift. The base Carrera is close enough already, so Porsche will have to raise its power before upgrading the Cayman S.

Second, Porsche's policy is to roll out engine upgrades to the Cayman 1 year before the Boxster (at least on the 987 roadmap). It is not to give the Cayman more power on a permanent basis (which would not be cost-efficient).
So, the Cayman S will eventually get over 300 hp, but not in 2007.

Some people say the Cayman has more than 300hp already

True.....there are a few individual dyno tests floating around where rear wheel HP would easily equate to a greater than 300 HP gross. I'll bet the 3.4 is putting out around 305 - 310 real world.

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

I think a better question would be "When is the Cayman going to break 400hp"? After all, it already costs as much and weighs as much as a car with 505hp, so 100hp less seems reasonable to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have a Cayman S than a Z06 most days, but that chassis can certainly handle 400hp...

Good point. And even more importantly, for us 911Turbophiles, the more powerful the Boxster/Cayman line, the more powerful the 911Carrera and therefore the more powerful the 911Turbo.

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

The way Porsche operates is to fleece its buyers by offering powerkits at a substantial price increse. It is easier than selling the car with more hp and pricing at the same amount as the powerkit.

They may do that with the Cayman but it could cause a problem with the 911 owners.

With the facelift, due around 2008/2009. IF the Cayman "survives".

The cayman will have more than 300bhp when the carrera will have more than 355bhp and the carrera S will have more than 400bhp. oh, and when the turbo will have more than 500bhp.

See, you have to keep order in the porsche line up. It's like a ladder. Push one up and everyhing standing above it has to move up.

The 3.4 develops 295bhp and you don't need rocket scientist to tell you it was made on purpuse. I'm sure some guy from marketing went down to the factory one day and said: "don't go over 299 with that engine or you'll be fired in less time that a CGT goes to a 100km/h"

Nick, Ferrari is the expert at fleecing customers. Dont be suprised to visit your dealer one day and find agents from the Department of Justice visiting them.

In the US market, Ferrari is the only manufacturer and dealer network that baits customers with a intentional below market value MSRP as part of a scam to try to switch customers into "pre-owned" "as new" used cars at a price far above MSRP.

It is a sales tactic that Ferrari dealers boldly use to cheat customers with. They salt the market with a few new cars to "privliged" pet customers and then count on those to be flipped at F car dealers to provide additional dealer profit. In the stockmarket, this practice is very similar to the crime known as "laddering."

Of course, many Ferrari buyers fit the profile of the guy who only wants one to keep the next guy from owning one,
some are just whales who will pay any price, some just suffer quietly in their dealers sales office and then show up at their friends like they never got bent over at the dealership.

Some customers are dealers pets. They "buy" the car, put a few miles on it, then back to the dealership it goes under a consignment contract. The owner and dealership then split the over MSRP sales price. The factory just gives a wink and nod to this practice with F430s and did the same with F360's.

Greasy, very greasy. No wonder the F360 was the most popular sports car with Enrons most senior management.

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

The Cayman is a sad story, they should have priced it as an Audi TT competitor below the Boxster or give it a lot more power. the poor thing never had a fair chance

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

On a wholly unscientific measure, I have seen just 2 Caymans on the road since the launch. And this is in Bucks, Berks and London/SE where Porsches are a common sight. In the same period I counted loads of the 987/997 models after their launches.

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

Same here in Zürich. Other than at the dealer , I've seen one on the street and one parked in a public garage...

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

The base Cayman has been clocked faster than the base Carerra. For a $2k US chip tune you can bring the HP up to 320. Adding 25hp to a car that's already 300 lbs. lighter than the Carerra and you have a rocket. Beyond that, the Cayman is the quickly shaping up to be the best handling porsche on the road as per the experts. Not a bad set of wheels in my opinion.

If you're looking for more HP, I can build a kit roadster for about $35k US and make it go 0-60mph in under 4 seconds. It's more than just the power my friend.

    The Cayman is 121 lbs lighter than a C2 (2,954 vs. 3,075)

Re: When will Cayman break 300hp?

Grant, if you keep coming up with numbers like that, you will compell me to entertain the notion of buying one.
    So please cease!

That's huge! But I still must have at least 300hp.
