Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

Driving home tonight and up pops a message in the OBC - "Service in 400 miles" accompanied by a picture of a horizontal spanner.

Now, I bought the car 7 months ago, pre-owned, with 6,000 miles on the clock. The current mileage is just over 13,000 so, if the first service is due at 20,000, why am I getting this message now? To further confuse the issue, when I later started the car again, the message now reads - "Service in 300 miles." This is about 10 miles after the first message!

I'd phoned the OPC after the first message to enquire as to why the warning was 7,000 miles early. Their reply was to the effect that it works on the number of times the ignition is activated, so it thinks it's ready for a service. My reply, "What should I do about it?" He says, "Bring it in for service but we'll check whether it needs one before we do it!"

I'm going to take it over next week but wondered whether anyone has had a similar experience? I must admit, being a little cynical, the thought crossed my mind that the car may have been 'clocked' before I bought it and has actually done 7,000 miles more than shown at purchase.

    What do you guys think??

If you can find a guy who is clever enough to beat the system and "clock" your car, then ask him if he can also come up with a retro-fittable I-Pod integration system for it.

If he does, you could really clean up!

    HAhahahahah you are hilarious..

Basically, service calculators count the mileage and the elapsed time since the last service to get the remaining mileage and the remaining time to the next service. So, the service message appears either if you are nearing 20000 miles or if you are nearing 2 years since the last service.
If the service calculator is more sophisticated it takes oil quality, oil consumption, oil refills,... into account that are affected by your driving style. If you do many short trips or lots of high revs driving your mileage to the next service is much less than the mileage promised by the manufacturer.

That's ok if you did a longer drive before. The countdown probably goes like service in ..., 400, 300, 200, 100, service now. The start mileage of the countdown might depend on the average miles per day you are driving. Someone driving many miles a day should get the service message much earlier to let him enough time to schedule a service.

Re: Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

mine came up at 18k miles. i posted asking why and nobody really knew...

Re: Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

I had the same but after 18,000 miles in my C2S. The warnings then followed the same pattern of decreasing rapidly and bearing no relation to the milaeage which had passed.
I had the car serviced (about Pounds400 if I recall correctly) no extras required at service aside from tyres.
I doubt I drove the car very hard (I have not needed to renew the brakes for example) and it has had one day off the road on a Porsche driver education day. I was scrupulous about the break in period and almost all of my journeys are over 20 miles so it gets thoroughly warmed up.
I suspect that 20,000 miles would be in only ideal conditions and that services in practice will come up a lot sooner.
Is there any evidnce of hard use on the brake pads or discs?or even the exterior (I suspect not since it was sold to you as 7,000 miles), perhaps it was just driven hard or even a warning glitch!
Good Luck and let us know what the garage says when they look at it.

Re: Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

You're stuck going to the shop and getting them to "fix" it.

I'd tell them in advance, when you pick up the car you want a detailed, factual, documented EXPLANATION of why the thing is doing what it did.

This is "scary" sh*t IMO. I mean, my PCM went nuts and they were unable to tell me why or what for; the cars seem to have a life of their own.

Re: Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

service is based on mileage or time.....furthermore i agree that it could also have to do with the amount of cold starts. frequent short trips stress the components more than fewer long ones.....

Re: Warning Message - Service in 400 miles!

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll bear in mind what you have to say when I take the car in and let you know the outcome.
