Why did you choose the Cayman?

I've been contemplating purchasing a 911 for several months now and during that time the Cayman has been introduced. The styling is definetly Porsche with what I think is a more modern and aggressive look than the 911 and of course a lesser price. Still, the power and dare I say cachet from the Cayman is not quite that of the 911 and I remain indecisive. I'm not knocking anyone that has purchased the Cayman, on the contrary, I'm wondering why have those of you that bought the Cayman done so?

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

Drive them both and see which one you like best. It's a win-win situation and a tough choice. For me it was the more aggressive and fresh look along with the mid-engine
handling. For me the Cayman was the more fun to drive car all the way around......and that spoke to me more than cachet or iconism.....

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

If you've always lusted after a 911 than that's what you need to get.

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

I have driven both the 997 and the cayman S on a test drive the other day, and I much prefer the cayman. The 997 (tip) was a hell of a ride but there is something in that reptile that you need to experience yourself. It just feels more connected to the driver. The 997 felt more connected to the road. Not much difference on the speed either . The sound in the KmS is fantastic, its a different animal. There is no comparison IMHO, yet both a great cars and wont go wrong with either..but if you need the 2 seats in the back go with the 997, thats a good excuse! .... good luck

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

I have wanted the 911 for some time now but the Cayman wasn't even a choice. I'm 65-35 for the 911 and just wondering if anyone with a Cayman had the same problem. Perhaps seeing the Cayman was like receiving an epiphany for someone else, the 911 too much the Boxster too little, oh thank the Porsche gods for delivering unto me this Cayman. Anyone?

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

I got it because it's my daily drive, and the 911 felt a bit tail end heavy... what I mean by that is that it's a very fast and great car, but one that needs a bit more attention than a car that has the engine in the middle (different balance). It was too easy for me to engage the traction control on the 911, vs I haven't ever seen it engage on my Cayman S. Finally, the 911 felt a bit overpowered for US roads (I felt like it was a car that want to merge on the Hwy at 120mph and that needs Autobahns

I wanted a bit less than the 911, particularly somethign with a different balance; for me it's a "better" balance, but I'll leave the opinion of what's better to each.

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

If you've always wanted a 911, you should get one. I had a 996 and really enjoyed the whole experience, the 911 is a complete package, great engine, cache and involving to drive.
If I hadn't owned one I'd get another without a doubt, but I'm quite happy with the Cayman, it's nearly as fast in a straight line, handles miles better and is not as common as the 997 or Boxster for now at least.

Both cars a great to drive and own and I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. If money has any bearing on your choice get the Cayman, it does nearly everything the basic 997 does for a lot less money and drives better, it's not as practical as the 997 (which is more practical than you'd think).
The 911 offers a bit more straight line shove and is seen as the top Porsche, only you can decide how much that matters. The only downsides with the 911 are, the front ends light and if you don't use the correct 911 braking technique the ABS kicks in a lot, which can become annoying. Also you have to transfer the weight from the front to the back to get the front-end to turn in with any sort of conviction, which is very rewarding and involving most of the time, but sometimes can be a bit tedious when you want to get from A to B quickly.

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

I test drove both and very much appreciated both. The Carrera 2 definitely felt a bit faster on corner exits and straights below about 3750 RPM (above that there was little to no discernable difference). BUT the Cayman felt much more balanced, light, and fluid. It was more fun to drive and toss around.

In the end I felt that it would be relatively easy to add 911 beating power to the Cayman, but difficult if not impossible to add Cayman handling and balance to the 911.

Plus I think the Cayman looks better. The 911 looks somewhat dated to me and constantly screams 46 YEAR OLD INVESTMENT BANKER, or 53 YEAR OLD LAWYER, or (in NYC and London) 28 YEAR OLD TRADER. Not that there's anything wrong with those professions, it's just a little cliche in my neck of the woods.

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

I've been looking at 911's for over a year. Tossing and turning.....should I get a Targa or a 4S?? I test drove both and loved 'em. Then along comes the Cayman and I fell for it immediately. Some people say that the back end of the Cayman is boring which I totally disagree with. To me, the back end of a 911 just sort of fades away and there is something missing. The Cayman just looks cool with the rear bump outs.

I had the same thoughts as you....being in my mid 30's, I need more HP!!! In doing some research, I've seen the Cayman clocked at faster times than the 911 on tracks. The Cayman is 300lbs. lighter than the Carrera which is why. I posted this in another forum so sorry for the redundancy, but you can get a $2k chip tune to bring it up to 320 HP. Add 320 HP to the already lighter Cayman and you're talking some major torque. That will take you into the low 4's in the 0-60 category. I think NewPG hit the nail on the head....you can't add the handling to the 911 but you can add the HP to the Cayman.

As for the handling, you can't beat the Cayman. Hands down its the best handling porsche I've driven (better than Turbo's or 4S). Just make sure you get the PASM.

As for room, you have the front trunk and rear. It's actually quite a bit when you see it. I'm not sure how it stacks up against the 911 but I imagine they are pretty close in storage space.

It was definitely an epiphany for me. I haggled with the dealer quite a bit and actually got 10% off the sticker. Some may be doing better, but I was pretty happy with the deal I got.

Having said all this. A Porsche is a Porsche, you can't go wrong. The 911's kick ass as well. It's a matter of personal preference.

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

Where can you get a chip for $2k that bumps the Horsepower up to 320? I have not heard about this and I am active on several forums?

Re: Why did you choose the Cayman?

(Sorry if this is posted twice)

    As for the chip tune:
    http://www.automotion.com/productpage.aspx?pid=109558&name=Powerchips%C2%AE&vehicle=31505

I have not seen any fedback on how they work on the Cayman. I know two people that have used the Powerchips on 911's and are very happy with them.

Here's something else you might be interested in to pick up 13HP:
"Well the dyno results are in for AFTER the Air Intake Mod. Same dyno, same temperatures and conditions, 2 days later, same tank of gas, only difference was the Air Intake mod was completed. Results of the first run...

    283 RWHP!!!

    results of the second run

    282 RWHP!!!

This compares to 267 and 269 done 2 days ago. It would appear that this modification is worth at least 13 horsepower at the rear wheels!!!"

Very interesting thread. Here's the link:
