    Sport Chrono Peformance

Gentlemen I have a dumb question to ask so please bare with me. I have seen a few postings about the Sports Chrono, yes the one some people call a WART on the dash of the 997S. Beside using it for track time what other purpose does it serve. From some of the postings I get the impression that some people think turning the chrono on increases the acceleration time. This is not true, is it?

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

The sports button that comes with the Chrono pack on 997s (except GT3 where it's standard) does boost performance.

Thanks JFT, so by just by turning it on and letting it roll the car will accelerate faster?? Or do I have to set on any special setting, if there is any at all? Again I am not talking about the sport button, just the wart on the dash, will turning that thing on affect the performance at all?

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

    Just press the button!

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

Not sure it will actually increase acceleration, but it's supposed to give a bit more torque in the mid-range and it does firm up the ride a bit.

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

I know about the button, I was only talking about the wart on the dash board will turning that thing on do anything to the performnce? I don't think so but I just wanted to make sure.

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

Oh. Sorry. No, starting the watch will not change anything.

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

    Thanks bud.

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

It's a bit more complicated than that. It re-maps the throttle programming such that it delivers more response with less input, and dials in a slightly more aggressive ignition timing curve. Combine that with an extra 200 rpm available at redline before you hit the rev limiter, and magazines have measured a slight performance edge in straightline acceleration with Sport Chrono on, basically a tenth or two in the 1/4 mile. I would attribute any gains mostly to the extra revs available at the end of the tach, and the timing. The aggressive throttle mapping only helps in giving you the PERCEPTION of better performance while driving normally, which quite honestly, I like. I don't care if it's perception or reality, if the car feels more spirited and responsive, it's more fun to drive, regardless of whether someone considers it "trickery".

I strongly feel that the throttle settings with Sport Chrono "on" should be the standard setup for all models, but then again, there may be nit-pick concerns that cause them to use the "happy button" to get around. Such as setting up the standard for optimal emmissions and mileage to get the cars rated as friendly as possible, and then allowing you to go with a more aggressive tune at the touch of a buttom...

    I'm simply speculating...

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

The wart on the dash is just a stopwatch.... It's the buttons down low, that come along WITH the stopwatch as part of the package that give you the option to dial up more responsive throttle, more redline, and firmer suspension...

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

I've never used the stopwatch other than to show people what it does...

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

69bossnine: Thanks for the insightful info. I have noticed with the sports button on, the minute I take my foot off the clutch, I can tell the car revs higher and the accelerator pedal is more responsive. When I take off without the sports mode on I have to depress the accelerator pedal harder while with the chrono on just touch the accelerator pedal and the car revs high immediately

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

Please don't mislead edz61, the actual real performance of the car is unaltered. It's an creates an illusion or more stuff happening sooner around the track but doesn't really change anything.

Nevertheless, definitely get the option. Adds a bunch of fun and convenience.

You're incorrect there MMD. Research it. It's more than just a throttle re-map, and more than one magazine has recorded quicker 1/4 mile times with it on. I can't remember if it was MT or C&D, but the 1st road test they did of a 997S with SC resulted in a 2 10th gain in e.t.. More range before redline, and tweeked timing, IS a real performance increase, not an illusion. It's just a matter that it's not a herculean increase, just a minor one.

My sales associate-- who is the epitome of the Porsche techie, he could label each wire on a 997 wiring harness without notes, he remembers torque wrench settings the way Ayrton Senna remembered oil-pressure readings to two decimals at each point during a race-- my sales assoc told me long ago that Sport Chrono slightly modifies fuel mixture. Yeah, yeah I know-- the "sales" part of his title.....

Conversely, if fuel mixture were modified resulting in improved acceleration, wouldn't Porsche tout this in order to guarantee that just about everybody orders the $920 Chrono option?....conspiracy theories aside, maybe Spt Chrono-activated fuel mixture mod is a state secret that EPA/DOT never....?

Better yet, a professional grade dynamometer ought to detect 5 horsepower this way or that on back-to-back comparo runs....wish I had one!

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

Don't forget that acceleration is not a function of just peak horsepower and torque, it's a function of horsepower and torque ACROSS A RANGE. In short, the car wouldn't have to make an ounce of extra power to increase performance, it would just have to spread the power over a wider or more usable range.

I'm not purporting to know how these curves are affected by Sport Chrono, I'm just punching holes in flawed logic...

    Oops, sorry. no problem

I was recalling the original litany of SC pros and cons back when I ordered the car and everybody must have been saying what you were kind enough to remind me of above. I guess I remembered "minor" difference as "no diffenence. oops... .

    dang! I shudda got it!!

BUT THEN AGAIN: why doesn't Porsche spec their performance figures to include the "SC difference?"

    Re: Sport Chrono Peformance

This article in Total 911 a few months ago tells you everything you need to know about the Sport Chrono and why you should have it!
