    Cayenne Turbo S Prebuy Questions

I'm driving the Touareg V8 cousin currently and have some questions that some of you who have been in the Cayenne for a while may be able to answer. Yes, I've read the other pages in the Cayenne forum as well as others.

    Here are the questions...

    1. How does the phone integrate w/ the NAV display screen? Can you use any carrier (i.e. Verizon wireless?) Can you dial the phone from the number pad on the NAV unit? What kind of phone do you have to buy or can you hook any cell phone into the system?

    2. The NAV data in the Touareg has been limited from day 1. For example, public roads in rural areas in Northern New England don't show at all in the Treg NAV data. I understand that Cayenne uses a different system. Is it better and does it have detailed information?

    3. Sub Woofer in replacement of a spare tire...what's up with that? Is there any work around other than a can of fix a flat? And, no I don't want it hanging on the back hatch.

    4. I've looked at the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo S. I figured until I optioned up a Cayenne S with what I want, I might as well buy the Turbo. The leap here is to the Turbo S for even more bucks. Will the limited availability of the Cayenne Turbo S (i.e. few manufactured) hold its value more to the Porsche brand loyalists?

    5. The Cayenne Turbo S has been now available for approximately 45+ days. With few exceptions, almost all the Northeast U.S. Porsche dealers still have their launch vehicle. What's up with that?

    6. There are varying opinions and unofficial reports about what the crossover components are between the Touareg and the Cayenne. I've done a bunch of mods to my own Touareg and understand the CAN BUS control modules, etc. Are these the same in the Cayenne or did Porsche abandon the VW electronics for its own engineering?

    7. Given the fact that I live in the northeast, 20 inch rims in the winter are not an option. Is it reasonable to go to an 18 for the winter months on a vehicle with 521 hp?

    8. Unlike the Touareg, the Cayenne offers a ride softness/hardness selection in addition to ride height selection. In the Touareg, you can select ride comfort, but it does not give the option of also selecting ride height independently as the Cayenne. What's the theory behind this on the Porsche side?

    9. The new 911 Carrera Turbo has the VGT turbos in it. Is there any scuttlebutt if Porsche will incorporate the VGT technology in the Cayenne and eliminate any remaining lag. I drove a Cayenne Turbo S and noted that the lag isn't bad, but at 2000 rpm, it really kicks in. I would assume with the larger V8 4.5 liter engine, lag isn't as much of an issue.

    10. The Cayenne Turbo S I drove has a bad wind noise coming from the sunroof / roof rail area. Has this been a known issue with the Cayenne and its rail system? I took the racks off my Touareg because I never use them. Can I take the rails off the Cayenne?

    11. Is it true that the facelift has in fact been delayed until 2008?

    12. Dealer has offered a MSRP vehicle of $120,865 to me for $108,000. Comments? My calculation is that his invoice is around $97K for the vehicle.

    13. Finally, the loaded question...I'm intimately familiar with the gremlins that VW and Porsche have had with this model. Even on the Touareg side, those gremlins still appear to be present in the current model runs. Does this appear to be true as well with Porsche?

Thanks in advance for your help and comments.

Re: Cayenne Turbo S Prebuy Questions

I have only had a Turbo for about 3 weeks, but I will try to help with some of your questions.
    1. Don't know, don't have the phone.
    2. I believe the current version of the nav system has a fair amount of detail. Early 2005's had one version, but since about June 2005 they have come with a much more detailed system including country roads, zip codes and more.
    3. I have the 20" wheels that come on the Turbo S on my Turbo. It came with an inflatable spare with the sub woofer in the center of the wheel. I am not sure if this is the same for the Turbo S, but I cannot imagine why not.
    4. The Turbo S is the only Turbo currently available. They have not been making any regular Turbos since the S came out. So, it may not be quite as rare as you hope for. You cannot even order a Turbo at the moment.
    5. It is too much money. They were pushing it at $90k for the Turbo, but $111k + for the S is over the top. How big of market can there be at that price? How big of market for resales? And with a refreshed model showing up within about a year, what will that do to the value? You might be better off finding a dealer that is motivated to get rid of a Turbo that they have had in inventory for a while. I just bought a new 2005 Turbo that had a sticker of $96k for $82k. There are still a few 2005's if you do a search of Porsche dealer inventories (try Beverly Hills Porsche). Or find a 2006 that has sat for a while and go for a large discount.
    6. Don't know the answer
    7. With its larger brakes, you cannot use 18" wheels on the Turbo S. If that is a primary issue, you will have to pass on the Turbo S. You can get 18's with the regular Turbo since it has smaller brakes.
    8. Ride height and ride quality are two separate controls. You can lower it about 1" and leave it there. You can lower it another 1" or so for loading/unloading. You can also raise it several inches for off-roading (up to something like 30 MPH). You also have a choice of Sport, Normal and Comfort ride settings. At this point my tends to stay at the 1" lowered position and comfort setting (I have the 20's, so comfort helps).
    9. You can eliminate the lag by switching off the PSM. It hasn't really bothered me, when you really hit it hard it tends to move about as fast as you could want. I really only notice a lag when I kind of half way hit it. It seems to happen when you don't give it enough gas to cause a gear kickdown. Don't know what future turbos may show up in the Cayenne.
    10. I have no racks on mine. Didn't want them. Didn't come with them. No noticable wind noise.
    11. Latest rumor on facelift is model year 2008, with some saying it will show up around April 2007 and others saying June/July 2007. Either way you only have about a year.
    12. Pretty good discount. Is this for a vehicle equipped the way you want it? I don't know if the dealer has $23k profit in the S. In the regular Turbo it is more like $12 - $13k. Since you can't use 20" wheels, this could be a mute issue. What kind of deal will he give you on a regular Turbo?
    13. I have owned 3 911's and they have been trouble free. I have only had the Turbo for 3 weeks, so I am not the best one to ask, but so far so good.

So 102 ppl saw that PS CA had already responded comprehensively?

Re: Cayenne Turbo S Prebuy Questions

I think that PS CA encapsulated the answers to the laundry list of questions fairly well. You can find more detailed answers to many of your questions by searching the forum, but PS CA has given you the vast majority of the facts, - most everything else is personal taste and individual situation. The only factual piece I could add is that, given that it sounds like you can only get the Turbo S at this point, you can kiss the temp spare goodbye. So far, they only make it in 18", which WILL fit over the SMALLER subwoofer, but WILL NOT fit over the PowerKit/Turbo S brakes. Another small contribution, those of us with '05 and '06 models seem to be suffering less from the gremlins you describe than the earlier buyers. The throttle hesitation is still there, but, as PS CA says, can be largely overcome by either switching off PSM or using the Tip.

Re: Cayenne Turbo S Prebuy Questions

To help clarify a few points -
    1. The phone requires a SIM card to be inserted in the PCM unit. An easier proposistion for the European Market since they can clone the SIM cards there. The key pad on the face of the PCM then is used to dial, hang up, and pick up for calls. Not bad if you get a SIM card you can leave in the Cayenne.

    3. Spare tire is removed because the collapsible spare is comparable to the 18" wheels which won't fit the front axle because of the brakes.

5.Are they the actual lunch vehicles or did PCNA give them a second helping? Launch vehicles are almost always produced in numbers large enough to ensure that some dealers may be able to get two or three if the demand is there.

    8. Ride Height adjustment is because the Cayenne was designed to compete with Rovers and Land Cruisers (the older ones) as an Off-Roader. The Cayenne also lowers automatically at higher speeds to reduce the air "trapped" under the vehicle and reduce lift. It also hunkers down to minimize body roll and increase stability. If you have somewhere that you can drive above 130 MPH the car will actually lower to the only setting you cannot manually select -about 7" of clearance.

    10. The rails can be removed.

    12. Dealer is already on a skinny deal there.

    13. Porsche has done a great job of eliminating the gremlins. Somebody may know somebody else that has had an issue with this or that, but by and large the Cayennes are sound.

I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Re: Cayenne Turbo S Prebuy Questions

I try to answer the remaining questions.

    1. The phone integrates nicely with the NAV/PCM display screen, you can use the phone from the PCM system, incl. dialing numbers, etc. You can't hook an aftermarket phone to the PCM unit, you need the original phone module.
The phone is a GSM standard tri-band phone, it works with GSM 900, 1800 and PCS 1900 phone carriers. The US uses the 1900 frequency. I'm not familiar with Verizon wireless but if I'm not wrong, they're not using the GSM standard. T-Mobile, Cingular for example are using GSM. You just need to pop in a tiny little SIM card from a GSM carrier and there you go.

    4. Looking at the current fuel prices and expecting the facelift around MY 2008, I doubt that even the Cayenne Turbo S will hold it's value. It really depends on the markets but I would count on it.

    5. The Cayenne Turbo S is expensive. And many customers already expect the facelift, some believe that it comes very soon, one reason why they may be hesitant.
Another reason maybe: fuel prices. I don't know about the US but over here in Germany, even pretty wealthy people avoid such cars and prefer Diesel models with lower consumption.

    6. Don't even think about it. Although there are VW logos on almost all black boxes in the Cayenne and although you can even find a VW/Audi software "imprint" in the programming of the black boxes, they're not compatible.
And because it seems you didn't understand how the development "exchange" between VW and Porsche worked: Porsche actually did the whole job, VW "just" provided a few engineers and other specialists to assist them with their own project, the Touareg. And believe it or not: the VW development center for the Touareg was NOT in Weissach, it was outside Weissach because of security reasons. So the Cayenne isn't really a VW with Porsche badge but the Touareg a Porsche with VW badge.

    7. you can't fit 18'' rims because of the bigger Turbo S brakes. You need to go for the 19'' wheels and although they deliver a decent snow performance, the 18'' wheels would have been better (from the experience with the standard Turbo on 18'' winter wheels).

    9. I highly doubt that the VTG technology will be introduced on the new Cayenne Turbo but it can never be excluded. The lag is actually "artificially" induced, I don't want to brag about it again (check our archives) but apparently it has been done for safety reasons.
Just imagine this: soccer mom, red light, mom presses throttle down fully, Cayenne Turbo S jumps forward in an instant, in front of soccer mom, another car stops suddenly, soccer mom already has a huge speed and just released the foot from the throttle to operate the brake.... BOOOOMMM. We're talking about a 2.5 ton monster, an instant acceleration would be dangerous for many drivers. Unfortunately, the lag can be dangerous too.

    11. We don't know anything about delays. We heard that the facelift is due around MY 2008 (starting with summer 2007), I never heard it was planned earlier.

    12. 108000 instead of 120000 is a great price, I doubt there is much air left. Not sure but I think the invoice was around 102000-104000 on this car, maybe somebody can correct me. I doubt it was under 100000, Porsche isn't GM, they have pretty "tight" prices.

    13. my Cayenne Turbo (april 2004 build) hasn't had many gremlins, actually only one: that stupid micro switch of the rear window lock. Not heard of any "gremlins" recently.
In my opinion, the Cayenne Turbo is a pretty reliable car. I just had a minor fix on the Tiptronic, some sort of shifting "stick" beneath the Tiptronic, sorry, don't know the english word for it. The Tiptronic was shifting very hard and jerky from 3rd to 4th gear and it was getting worse. Now it disappeared. Judging by the fact that I drive my Cayenne Turbo Powerkit (500 HP, actually same as Turbo S, incl. brake and suspension/steering setups) pretty hard to compensate for the (temporary) lack of a sportscar in my garage', I think it is a pretty reliable car.

For 108000, the Turbo S is an interesting offer. If you're willing to wait another year or so, you may get the facelifted Turbo (not S) which MAY be actually faster than the Turbo S due to the rumored 480-500 HP flat stock power and the rumored lighter weight and other improvements.

Your choice. I plan to keep my Cayenne Turbo Powerkit for another three years or so because I spent way too much money for a family car (which it is for us).
