    Life with a hosepipe ban

Those of you in sunnier climates might not know that we, in South East England, have been slapped with a hosepipe ban. This effectively means we can't use the hose to wash down the car and must use a bucket etc.

I thought I'd share the situation I've just been caught in.
We are off to The Peaks and North Wales for Easter, to sample the better roads, so today is the last chance I have to clean the car to make it look good for any pictures I can get.

Good news this afternoon was that it started raining, so i made a quick dash to take the car out, to leave it soaking in the rain to soften the grim before I start with the bucket.
You know how it is, you can't resist the odd admiring look out of the window, but on this ocassion I realised that the really grubby bits, the rear arches and lower sides, might not be getting wet enough. So I popped out to remedy the situation.

    As if by magic my wife appears and finds me;

standing out in the rain in a T shirt getting soaked . .
with a watering can in my hand . . .
washing down the rear of the car.

When she had stopped laughing at what I was doing, her parting shot was
'Even if you keep on watering it, it won't grow into a GT3'

    Great!

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

But it will ""part ex"" into one bud ,, go on , tell her .. ..

    throt..

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

From time-to-time, we have a water use restriction too in the Northeast.

I'd do (and have done) the same thing to wash and rinse my car.

Your wife has a GREAT sense of humor, thanks for sharing it. Mine, thought I was starting to go crazy!

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

Wow, what's the reason for that? That'd make it real tough to clean off the debris first.

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

That is funny. Well, at least you got the car cleaned!

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

I too washed my car this weekend. It took me about 2 hours to repeatedly soak, wash and rinse. In the end I must have used about 20 full buckets of water, FAR more than I would have used with my hose and power-jet-washer.

And to top it all off, right at the end when I was just drying the car - IT STARTED RAINING!

I understand the principal of saving water but, for a country that is VERY green in the first place, surely it's a case of the Water Companies not collecting enough of the water that drops on our collective heads and losing too much of it en-route to our water-metered taps?! All I see is that I will have to pay additional money to them for the extra water I now need to clean my car!

Cleaning the wheels without water pressure is a real pain in comparison. No idea how I am going to do the soft-top if it gets too dirty. Have to take it to the local OPC I suppose for them to do it...

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

As far as I'm aware the ban doesn't extend to commercial use. Why not visit a 'Wand Wash' station to get the bulk of the cleaning done and then do the finer detailing at home?

Or you could get your wife to hand you the buckets in the rain wearing your T shirt - give the neighbours a treat.

Maybe you should have worn more than just a T-shirt.

Re: Life with a hosepipe ban

You guys crack me up! Fritz, I assume the ban on getting your hosepipe out in public also applies to our own 'personal' ones?
