    sport steering wheel option??

    Hi Guys,
I paid over $460 for the Sport Steering Wheel in Suple Leather option... and my friend just got his 997 without this option, and I cannot tell the difference between the 2 steering wheels... does anyone have a picture of the regular default steering wheel and does anyone have a picture of the sport steering wheel options? I need to compare them to see if i'v been had by my dealer... any help will be appreciated... thanks!

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

    Adam,
I am not an expert, but I believe there are two steering wheeel options: 460 Leather Sport Steering Wheel, and XPA Thicker Sport Steering Wheel in smooth leather. Sorry, I do not have a picture.
    Anthony

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I supposedly have the XPA option. I say supposedly because it doesn't really feel all that thick and I'm wondering if it's not actually the 460 option. I thought it would be similar to a momo type feel that has a larger oval radius. Can someone else comment or measure the diameter of the steering wheel using a vernier calipers. Here's the pic of my car.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I don't have any way to measure it--if you can stop by any dealer and check out a 997 S with the Sports steering wheel option, you will "feel" not so much see the difference in the rim thickness.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

    Hi Paul,

Finding a 997S with the XPA option is not the easiest thing to do around our two dealerships. If it's not too much trouble can you measure the perimeter using a string? Thanks.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I have XPA Thicker Sport Steering Wheel and would say it is much thicker than the standard wheel. At the top of the wheel I measured 105mm circumference using a piece of string.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Thanks Paul. I'll have to measure mine later to see if it matches.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Classic Porsche stratified product marketing.... where leather is not simply leather-- if we want the "good" leather we pay extra.

adam s, the standard Sport Steering Wheel on the 997S has a pebble-grain, slightly textured leather covering the rim and center hub over the airbag. Having spec'd option 460, your steering wheel gets a smooth, softer leather covering the rim and center hub (btw this same upgraded smooth leather comes standard if you order Option 431 Multi-function Steering Wheel in leather, or multi-function in carbon, wood, alum look...).

That's the only difference. Stop at a dealer and hold the wheel of a 997S with no steering wheel option listed on the window sticker & you will detect a difference. I can't vouch for your friend's car, maybe he bought from stock and never noticed the optional extra-cost steering whl.

XPA is noticeably thicker wheel rim, it's unlikely that you would confuse XPA with standard-thickness wheel if both cars side by side. The XPA wheel also benefits from what seems like an even more butter-soft grade of leather than 460 smooth leath-- many have remarked XPA wheel feels almost suede-like.

Looking at that photograph I'm 99% sure you have the XPA version. I have a thinner rim, cos I also wanted the multifunction wheel and you cannot spec both options.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Dunno if this has worked but here goes...

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Res B - Thanks for the clarification but I thought the 460 option also had the round airbag cover.

Res B- cool effects in your post....how in the heck do you do that?
stom_m3- option 460 is the smooth leather 3-spoke wheel w/round airbag cover: current price $490. on Porsche.com USA configurator.

Option 459 is smooth leather wheel with triangular airbag cover: $240.
Try it on 997S configurator.... click on "Summary" after selecting each option to see the respective option code. Cheers.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Stom_m3 - As Damian said. The 460 is the 3 spoke Sports with Smooth Leather.

Damian - Both the Sig and the Steering Wheel animation are done as individual images in Photoshop and are joined/converted to an animated gif in Adobe Image Ready. It's pretty easy to be fair, 10 mins having a go and you'll suss it no problem.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Thanks ResB.. that is very good, and I guess I have the 460 option.. but which one is the THICKER wheel.. that is in fact what i tried to order... can you confirm it is in fact NOT in yoru animation?

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I can confirm that the "Thicker" steering wheel is not shown in the animation. Do you want it to be?

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

Actually that is what I wanted to know is the difference between the 460 option and the XPA. They supposedly use the same form factor but they just wrap another piece of leather around it. With the picture I posted above, the dealer says I have the XPA option but it doesn't feel like it.

I am fairly computer illiterate .
I just have to ask . HOW DID YOU DO THAT ??

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

if u could ad it to the animation, it would be fantastic... i am a bit pissed however as that is what I wanted... and I think my dealer screwed up... :-(

    XPA feels phat

I just got my new car yesterday and ordered XPA with it. The rim feels fatter and more tactile - the padding feels soft to the touch. Since I've driven a massive and extensive 17 miles on the car it's too early to say any more than it feels more right than the standard 3 spoke round hub wheel on my former coupe.

I'm not ResB but I too was impressed.

Le Chef- only 17 miles?? I'm surprised that you didn't log 100-125 miles on the first day like I did!..hope your health continues to be good, congrats on the car.

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

    FWIW:

I have thicker wheel on my m3. It's nice because I drive it like a sedan most of the time; easier to get a grip, not tiring maybe safer (?).

I have the thinner wheel avail as stock on the 997S; I loooove it. There seems to be a more delicate interface between me and the car's steering. A daintier wheel, so to speak, means a more refined touch is delivered. Seems that way at least. Thin wheel also reminds me of the XKE (or other British roadsters) that was in my past.

Thick wheels remind me of NASCAR where you have to muscle the car into the direction you want to go (in circles); thicker wheel would result in less fatigue.

    Just my opinion... .

Here's the measurment on my S for ya.

Measured with vernier calipers, the ***narrowest*** diameter at the top of the wheel is 27mm (1 and 1/16 inches). Wheel crossection appears to be oval, so this is the narrowest part of the oval.

Somewhere it is said the stock S wheel' grip diameter is smaller than the non-S stock wheel. Can anybody verify this?

    Picked up late

I had meetings out of the office all day and didn't get to the dealer until 5.30. By the time the finance guys had given me the rubber glove treatment all I wanted to do was drive home.

Car is a joy to drive with the top down. I can't believe I spent all these years NOT driving a cab. It certainly makes the heart sing, which is a good thing!

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I've updated the animation. But I changed the order in which they're shown.

Standard / 3 Spoke Sports with Smooth / Thicker 3 Spoke Sports with Smooth / 3 Spoke in Smooth.

In the configurator nothing really changes. The Thicker just shows enhananced stitching like the 3 Spoke Sport with Smooth leather. You can't tell from the images.

Just using a close-up of the 460 and XPA using the configurator, doesn't show any difference at all! Duh!

    Re: sport steering wheel option??

I love my C4 Cab but I have a question, make that 2 questions. Whoops, 3. I have smallish hands so went with the standard steering wheel. To be honest, I find it "hard" to the feel after a day's driving.
What is the name of the softer/plusher wheel?
Would it work o.k. for smallish hands?
    Can it be retrofitted?
    Thanks.
