    motor oil recommendations

    Forgive me if this isn't sports car enough but i bought a 2001 vw GTI with the 1.8L Turbo (i know its only half of the 996TT,997TT displacement).
    explaination: as i'm still a student i've got to work my way up to a Porsche gradually.

    To the point now, i'll be looking at an oil change soon and from what i've seen on rennteam, mobile 1 seems to top the list of the recommended oils. I just wanted to confirm that the mobile 1 is the way to go.

    Mobil 1 0W-40.

    Might want 15W50 in a Turbo for the high temps...

    Vancouver is actually pretty temperate - rarely freezes - and the temperature inside a 1.8L motor making 200hp can be quite toasty. I use Mobil 1 15W50 in Denver and it's colder here in Winter. The stuff is rated to be pourable WELL below Zero F...

    New predicament: Dealership said that the oil should be at least a 5 weight recommending a 5W-40 or 5W-50. (mobil 1 website recommends 0W-40). The owners manual says it recommends 5W-40 but also to choose an "oil suitable to your climate". So do i do mobil 1 15W-50 in the summer and 0W-40 in the winter? Suggestions please and thanks

    Schmuy, just to clarify - which manual are you referring to?

    If it's your VW manual then I'd go for that recommendation.

    The Mobil website lists Mobil 1 0W-40 as the only Porsche approved variety. The 15W-50 is recommended for extreme high revs and temperatures.

    John H, it was the vw manual.

    5w-30 synthetic is the best street oil. It comes up to temp fast, provides great cold start response, and will handle a significant amount of heat before it starts to thin. Mobil 1 is a good choice. Their 5w-30 is rated up to 300F (oil temp). That is pretty darn hot and you should never see those temps on the street.

    While I was never one to beleive that oil itself can provide HP, the lighter weight of the 5w-30 will allow your engine to rev quicker than say a heavier oil like 15w-30.

    For higher temps (summer) or occasional track use, a good oil is 10w-30. Using 40w with modern synthetics is a thing of the past, and you may actually lose an HP or two.

    I would only recommend 40w for high rpm, constant track use, at high temps and for long periods of time...basically where the need for protection outweights absolute performance.
