Long story short: Money is invested right now, taking it out would probably lower my chances to make more money and I cannot really afford it. Leasing the car would be a possibility (now, after I got an offer) but this is not a car you lease, this is a car you buy and my chances to buy it after the 3 year lease would be minimal because the value of this car will go through the roof and I doubt that my dealer would be willing to sell it to me for the "official" remaining value.

    sell the GTS Cab?

Increase size of mortgage on the house?

I could return the GTS Cab and take the 911 R instead, this would be possible but I love the GTS Cab... Smiley

I have no mortgage, I am one of the rare individuals with zero debt and I'm proud of it (even in the current low interest rate environment). Seriously. I do not like making debt, even if I could afford it.

It seems I have to make a choice: Give away the GT500 and GTS Cab and get a 911 R or keep the other cars and no 911 R. From a financial point of view, the 911 R would probably even make sense but I know me, I wouldn't sell it after 6 months, I would keep it, so... Smiley

The problem is that I have to decide this week if I want the R or not, so not much time.

You should got for it , it would be a very nice and smart addition to your collection . It is a very special 911, many just don`t get it, which is also the beauty of it. Yes Porsche will make other special models which will take notes from this one but this one will remain very unique.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

RC - I never heard of a lease where the residilual amount was not stated in the purchase agreement and it was not written in stone. Here in the US you get to buy the car at that price at the end of the lease if you choose. The dealer can not alter that price.

    Get the R.

Is this titanium exhaust of the R sourced from Akrapovic ?

    sell the GTS Cab?

It is a lease Smiley Selling it will only reduce monthly costs, not free up capital for the R.

you can take a lease with fixed value, this is even cheaper then a lease with yearly mileage.

Just to be devil's advocate, the R value may have a limited window if Porsche decides to bring out more "purist" focused models with Motorsports content.  I do not believe we will see the current asking prices for the current RS once the .2 generation is released.  The 997 GT3RS 4.0 was the last of its kind but can that be said of this R??

If I were You I would wait for a new 991 GT2 RS. 911 R maybe is unique car but 991 GT2 RS will be a very very (in my humble opinion) galactic car.

For me 911 R is another marketing gimmick, which Porsche counts the number of units sold and the amount of profit. Porsche is not afraid of crisis.

Why Porsche not introduced 911 R on one of  IAA in 2017. It would be a great occasion to celebrate 50 years of "R"? 1967 - 2017

Ok I understood - in 2017 we will see 991 GT2 RS.  Two unique Porsche cars (911 R and 991 GT2 RS) in one 2017 year....

Money, money, money....Porsche is a specialist in extracting money from customers.

Do you know how many 991 GT3 RS UK have gotten?

The number seems to be about 130-150 991 GT3RS's in the UK, so on face value the 991R is 20% of this number! Smiley

I've seen a posting from a chap who has got one but has a friend who has a 918 and tried but didn't get one so that seems to blow the 918 priority theory out of the water.  Who knows... Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Kreso, you are always obsessed with the numbers! Seriously, if a car that weighs 1250 dry with 500hp isn't fast enough, I don't know what is! I couldn't care less if it has a ring time that is only 2s faster than a GT4, because I'm not a good enough driver to get that lap time anyway! For people who want the fastest track car, I don't understand why you wouldn't just go out and buy a Radical or even a used Cup car.

As for future value of this car, I'm not too worried about it. I'm just going to use it whenever I can, no different to any of my GT3s in the past. Won't be my daily driver but I would never hesitate to use it. If value stays high in a few years when I'm ready to move on, then great. If it loses as much as a 911 Turbo does, then it's ok too. Now I just need a car allocated to me!!!

Adam2S:However from what I hear on the UK forums there are only 30 cars coming to the UK out of the 991 available, which seems very low and disproportionate to the number of other GT models that the UK has been allocated.  If there are only 30 then the whole thing is a pipedream as there is ZERO chance of getting one.  918 owners again flexing their priority? yes

Just spoke to my OPC and he said the phone has been going mad and his email is caked with enquiries. Myself not interested in a R and wouldn't swap my GT3 for it either. Also "letters of intent" ( LOI ) are finished and its down to the dealer principal who gets the GT's . They are trying to root out the flippers via their recorded history.

+1 In my experience it is entirely down to the long term relationship with the Porsche dealer and DP as to whether you can get a car. Build relationships that last.

this fascination with what the new R represents compels me to add a nicely maintained , low mileage last of the he-man " no ABS /no air bags / no power steering " 911s like my first one ...a new '87 triple black Targa ...I want a 1989 G series 911 with updated valve guides and 993 head studs ... I 'd be set for a BETTER , imo , sunny weekend morning driving experience than an R on my favorite local canyon road for a quarter of the price ...I say that because  real " point A to point A " DRIVING TIME will be the same ( who cares about total distance when just driving a loop for a set alotted time ) but with twice as many pleasurable shifts and probably 10 x as many redlines ...i.e.,  and with the older car, I can use its redline sanely on a public road in 4 of its  5 gears , esp third gear and with more feel in the long -missed unassisted steering ...THAT to me is genuine retro european ethos sports car driving : pegging redline gear after gear in a roaring low tq high rpm motor to access its power band but still new and plentiful enough where it is a guilt free driving machine , not a sudden "too precious "portfolio  investment object like older 60s and 70s ones and the currently trendy 993 ( which I had and like the 964 before which I also owned  , were both BORING  transitional year drives..the former engineered in the years they were near bankruptcy and the family came THIS close to selling itself to Toyota and felt like it .

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Compromising your quality of life to buy a car feels very wrong. RC this car dos not have what you need... It might be worth more in the future but probably only if you keep the miles very low.

Having no debt is a good goal in life as a rule. However it is not a rule to necessarily follow today with such low rates. Many very well advised friends and myself have taken on large mortgages again after many years of zero debt to free up some cash to buy yielding assets as they become distressed. The rates are just so low, with a mortgage you have a natural hedge vs inflation (much better than gold can be for example) and if you are patient enough can build or beef up an amazing retirement portfolio even in this low rate environment. Of course it involves some risk but it is an investment strategy, not speculation... The price of some assets got really dislocated recently but are already retracing quickly. With the income of the portfolio you can easily pay the mortgage and even reimburse the loan faster over time. The income part is key. Alternatively if you can rent the asset that you placed a mortgage on, again the rates are so low and rents are quite high to make it viable as a long term investment.

Disclaimer: this is not for everyone but that's how some rich guys are becoming richer (potentially) and surely even increases the inequality as these type of ideas and resources aren't really accessible to the lower parts of the middle class. The only way middle class gets richer is by wage growth or real estate appreciation. Bar some few exceptions, none of these are really happening right now.

This is against the idea behind the R. Save weight. Why do you need rear seats and PDK for relaxed short drives?

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Too much thinking...I get the whole thing about not loosing money or even making some while having fun but really this is not how I see this car. On paper it looks like the right "equation with all the good numbers" and I am sure some people did already their math and calculated the 911 R "Sharpe ratio" trying to rationalize their buying decision.

In my opinion the only things that should matter to us "911 aficionados" are:                                                                       (I) How much fun I am expecting to have with the 911 R (this is the investment return) ? You can assess this with a test drive or trust Chris Harris reviews ;)                                                                                                                                    (II) For how long I am expecting to have such a level of fun (this is the investment volatility) ?                                                                                               Based on your answer you could set the max. price you're willing to pay.

Final thought: we should make Porsche engineers / marketers job a bit more challenging!! By this I mean let's not just jump on any piece of marketing they throw to the market. I hate the " Artificially created exclusivity" ...the price point and the characteristics of the car should dictate how wide spread a model will be. If Porsche knows that we, the buyers  that make their profitability above any other car maker, are very demanding and not just willing to get the last "hyped" model,  they will start treating us more seriously. Today, I am convinced they feel that the market is ready buy any shit they throw at it and hence they do it ;) I am not trying to offend anyone just stating my honest opinion.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Personally I think modern weight savings is kind of pointless. I honestly don't think anyone could tell the difference between 100 lbs. You're talking 3200 vs 3300 lbs, or about 3% difference.

I really don't think anyone could even tell which car is lighter when driving.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Then to you this car is pointless. That's ok though. They are only looking for 991 potential buyers...

Personally, I prefer to drive a car made with lots of exotic metals and carbon rather than one that is made from scrap metal from old Corollas and Civics.

I don't see what the big deal is about this car.

If it's not designed to be the fastest and you're after a manual for involvement, why not just buy one of many 997 GT3 cars? Is it about having the fastest/best of the slowest/worst GT3s or something?

It's a 500hp N/A manual motorsport 911 without the boy-racer looks but all the lightweight features and gorgeous brown leather buckets. What's not to like? Smiley

Agree, nice move from Porsche, it looks terrific and it´s very well speced.
