Good read but I doubt that the facelifted GT3 will give Porsche fans a good replacement for a 911 R. Unless of course Porsche decides to offer that long awaited wing delete option, even for extra cash. Now that would be awesome!

i don't quite understand why wing-delete on a GT3 would be awesome. to get the ugly extendable spoiler as on the carrera or R in return? the last true sport cars made by porsche are the GT cars, the rest is deleted sauce catering to SUV fans and their wives.

but i agree it is a useless discussion. surely there is people out there who want a four seater GT3RS targa version and in the end they will win the game by majority vote (and check-book).

    peter

GT3RS targa with 4 seats? Got my name on one Smiley Actually this is the ONLY modern 911 I would consider. Else my money goes elsewhere (mostly to Ferrari).

What 4 seater Ferrari rivals a GT3RS though.?.

GT3/RS 4 seater, not sure about this, even the wing delete, jmo...

Ferrari makes the convertible 458 speciale and even LaF, and McLaren the 675LT spider. Porsche refuses to make a convertible GT3, one has to wonder why.

The 4 seat is just a Porsche argument. How much less sportier or slower would the GT3 be with 4 seats realistically? IMHO not enough difference for any of us here to notice except François.

A convertible GT3 with 4 seats just makes a lot of sense to many people... It is the ONLY Porsche sport car I would spend money on.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

A 997.1 GT3 with a sunroof (mandatory) was offered back in 2007/2008 in the US and PCNA received a backlash from the purists that they took pretty seriously.

I can't imagine a wingless GT3 being tracked, would be confusing between it and a C4S with a cell phone mount (racist?) angry

What sort of market research have you done to arrive at "many"?  I would guess that most people buying a 4-seater convertible 991 don't even know the significant mechanical differences between the Carrera and GT3...

Well, I  would have big problemems fitting two seats around the cage in the back seat of my GT3. And even if some genius found a way, my 918 seat don't fold.....

Here in Sweden we prefer roof on our cars, or we would only use the car one day every second year and be called collectors indecisionblush

I like to track my cars, even the Panamera from time to time, but it seems Mr SciFrog is what I would call a "Rodeo Drive driver" based on his preferences... And SciFrog, since I base this only on what you post and don't know you, I could of course be totally wrong, so please forgive me in that case.... But you know, some guys like to flash around, some guys want to drive their car to the limit and there is room for both. Like there is room for both women and MEN.....smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

What do you think is the % of GT3 that never go to a track? My guess is 80%. The GT3 is a road car with some weekend track abilities. How many GT3 have a cage?

McLaren and Ferrari sell as many convertible as coupe, no reason to think the GT3 would be different. For many the 991 GTS is too soft and not exclusive enough. I actually think they would sell at least 1/3 of GT3 as convertible if offered the choice, if not more.

Actually according to Porsche, more than 80% DO go to the track.  Compare that to the convertible Ferraris you always mention in this conversation...

Guys, guys, this thread needs more manners (shame on you my fellow Swedes...) and more 991 R content.

I will kick off by posting a picture of the first (I believe) 991 R in PTS! It has been confirmed to be in the lovely British racing green. Enjoy!

Carlos, you are right. I do apologize. But we did not at all trash talk another member, only commenting on the different views on the topic. So, in short, the translation would be "+1" and nothing else. Never the less, it was not a god manner and I'm sorry frown

But let me use statistics in the same as SciFrog and tell you all that 100% of the people I know that owns a GT3 or RS is tracking their car. That is a FACT. But is it the truth ? Hmm.... It's a big world with a lot of different preferences, and my view is based on the Northern European market and I don't live where the sun shines every day and girls are walking on the sidewalks in bikini (then I might be worth flashing and have a lot of back seat available, even in a GT car), and here the GT cars have cage, nonfolding seats in front and go to track.....wink

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Same here, every GT3 owner I know in Belgium tracks his car. That's the reason they have one in their garages.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

According to Rennlist the BRG 991 R is Andy Preuninger´s personal car. Very cool!

Maybe around Miami . Around here, I would say 90% of the GT3 hit the track at least once a year . The one who do not track their cars, don't buy a GT3 .

Crap! Caught by the Rennteam Police Smiley

My most sincere apologies for having instigated this language hooliganism on our international sports car forum. I feel deeply ashamed over my lack of online manners. From now on I will do my outmost to avoid such situations and behave according to EU regulation.

It was never my intention to attack our valued member SciFrog Smiley

As the farmer wrote, if you run it through Google Translate it will come out as “+1”.

I wish everyone a relaxing Sunday and hope that no one else writes anything which could be interpreted as offensive or wrong on the Internet. There has clearly been enough of that this weekend.

Now back to the wingless GT3 RS Targa four-seater with extra cup holders in the rear.

Peter, Porsche fans all over the world love the new 911 R and would love such a car but Porsche only seems to produce  a limited edition model and this p.ss.d off a lot of customers. A GT3 with a wing delete option would calm down many of these upset customers and probably give them, what they want.

I'm not a fan of wings and if my R8 would have been available without one, I would have taken it.

i am myself not a big fan of wings but a GT3 (RS) without it? to look like a carrera????? and your wing looks pretty cool in my book.

A GT3 RS without a wing would be ridiculous, I agree but I don't see why a GT3 couldn't have some sort of diffusor and retractable wing instead of that huge fixed wing? It doesn't get less manly because of that.

Porsche could even leave away the GT3 badge and name this wing-less GT3 a 911 RS or GT or whatever. Smiley

Maybe in Switzerland because you have a speed limit. Smiley

Many GT3 here in Germany never see a track and if they see one, maybe for one of those Porsche or Porsche Club organized track events, which are basically some harmless driving/training on the track, something you could easily do in a 911 Carrera as well (and they usually do).

GT3 RS owners are a bit different maybe (I'd say that at least half of them are driving to the track) but like I said before, this is not a serious track tool for most owners. Usually, older GT3 and GT3 RS are used for track racing because the owners are a bit more enthusiastic about serious track racing but of course you cannot generalize this. Some owners go to the track, others don't, there is no statistics or similar on that, so it is difficult to tell.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Maybe it is a USA thing then where people are less afraid to drive flashy cars with big wings and never track them... But I still stand by the idea that many GT3 in the world never see a track and that a cab 4 seater version makes sense.

Generally not, but on some track events you are able to have the car insured. But even then, the terms are so strict that it must be considered 90% not insured. 😡😓😅
