    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

Well said. There is no right or wrong. All down to personal preferences and expectations. But I am sure we can continue to discuss and argue about the merits and experienced with PDK versus manual for another 10 pages. Maybe at some point we can even blame Obama for the differences indecision

Another way to look at the difference between manual and PDK is it is harder to drive a car that is manual especially in performance driving. Some want that. As for me, I have enough trouble getting out of bad and anything that makes my life easier I welcome.

Yes Whoopsy, you do get a small part of that connection when driving PDK in manual, which is why I find it much fun. But it is no way near as involving as with the manual gearbox. Even with PDK in manual you don't necessarily have to think, just keep pulling the paddle until PDK stops shifting down...

Funny thing, when I drive the RS, I uses the gear lever for shifting, I despises the tiny peddles that has a mind of it's own on the steering wheel. The gear lever never try to escape whenever I want to use it.

On the 918 I don't have that luxury, so I skip shifting myself all together.

But you could put the 918 into manual mode too? Or is it always auto?

Yes there is manual mode, but sort of pointless as the peddles moves with the wheel.

Moving peddles make sense in a race car as the steering rack is very quick, but not on a road car with a slower ratio.

Had a few of those moments where I applied the wrong peddle in the 918 on the ice course, shifting up instead of down and vice versa when I needed to increase or decrease wheel speed while drifting. Don't have that problem with the stationary gear lever in the RS.

Porsche's paddles are much too small. For some reason they insist on going their own way when it come to shifting on the steering wheel and they have failed miserably. Remember the buttons on the wheel?

Why don't they just acknowledge that the paddles on a Ferrari are more user friendly and adopt them?Smiley Germany engineering can't be that hardheaded. Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

One a race car the paddles make sense, in the GT3 Cup car I drove, the paddles are right there at the finger tips, but the steering rack is so quick that hands are never more than 90 degree each way, plus the Cup car paddles are slightly bigger and better positioned.

I've officially been told that I will not get a 911R. 😥 I think I may just put my money down on the 991.2 GT3. It's a real shame, because I'm a customer who is going to use this car instead of it being a garage queen or flipping it but they can't sell me one.

I was told the same, it's a real shame they're not allowing actual enthousiasts to buy them. Then again as far as Porsche is concerned I might just as well be a speculator looking to make a quick buck.

I thought I read somewhere (here maybeyes) that 918 owners will NOT get priority on the R. So I can only assume Porsche is doling out the cars to idiots who have more money the sense.

Right, only about 7 people without 918 got an allocation in US.

That's only in the US cause of the VIP program.

Not the same everywhere else in the world. In Canada not all the 918 owners will get one, and we have more Rs allocations than 918 owners. I believe the number is just under 50 cars.

My own dealer sold 5 918s but only 3 Rs, but they are all for the 1st 3 918 owners.

    Re: OFFICIAL: 911 R (2016)

In Germany Porsche doesn't have any special customer treatment for the R model.

Dealer decides who will get the car. A lot of dealer kept the car for himself.

In NA does the R go through the VIP program and the 918 owners get first dibs on the R or do the dealers get the allocations and they carry their own priority lists and decide who gets one like in RoW? (though if its the latter I would imagine that because of the VIP program the 918 owners would find out about the R before anyone else and be able to get themselves signed up on the dealers lists first anyways)

VIP Program in NA - dealers didn't even have any discretion who gets a car.  Was handled by Porsche NA.
